Mcv Feature On Next-gen Consoles

wouldn't it be better if "the industry" came here - and to other messageboards - to find out what punters think?

Nah. It never works. When "the industry" come here, we like to tell them that their game was rubbish, and they should have made a Gamecube version, and sold it at half the price, and made an entirely different game, and then we use some bad words and call them cheats and liars and fools and they go away again, moaning about loud-mouthed morons on internet forums.

Thanks to the moderators for letting me post this.

I'm the managing editor of the games trade magazine MCV and I'm putting together a feature looking at consumers' views on what the hardware manufacturers are telling you. My questions are:

With Microsoft, Sony and, to a certain extent, Nintendo consistently courting the media with a series of announcements, side-swipes and rumour, which console manufacturer do you think is winning the propoganda war?

After E3, Sony, but currently, as they're the only one with something to show, Microsoft.

If you could buy one of the next gen consoles, which would it be and why - or have you yet to make up your mind?

Which ever comes out first, which in this case will be the Xbox 360. As long as there is one game I'd like to play, I'll be buying, so I'll end up with all of them.

Have you gained or lost respect for any format holders in this pre-launch period?

Both Sony and Microsoft have spouted rubbish so I guess I've lost respect. Nintendo are currently blue-balling the entire gaming community at the moment with details on their own system so I'd say I've lost respect for them at the moment as well.

And, ultimately, do you believe what they're claiming?

Some, not all. Microsoft appear to of already turned back on some of their promises from E3.

Some people are going to think you're exaggerating, but consider for a moment the Prince of Persia thang.

In response to the original question:

No-one is currently winning the propoganda war. Unlike the movie industry, which gaming has been crudely emulating for the last few years, games advertising and customer relations is amature in the extreme. Take the recent 360 announcements; a supposed fan fare for the new piece of kit has left pretty much everybody scratching their head in bemusement. Do I need an AV lead? Do I want a hard drive? Will it be used in games? Can I use my old kit? Who knows? To scratch the surface of the latest press release is to put your finger straight through it.

Sony and Nintendo are no better. Renders, fake FMV and concept drawings of your new hardware does little to inspire confidence and drum up interest in your latest product.

Nevermind games content, the biggest indication of the gaming industy's infancy is the clumsy PR that comes with it.

...which console manufacturer do you think is winning the propoganda war?

Sony and Microsoft tied in second place for me. No one's winning it although I dare say one of 'em'll revert to the classic Andy Mee v Sony diplomacy days a year into the arms race...

Xbox 360. I appreciated the launch line up of the Xbox and look forward to the next batch of launch titles. That and there'll be some sort of a rebate a little while in when they drop the price :) Anyhow: Xbox delivered for me whereas PS2 was one big dull dissapointment although I don't think the difference will be that pronounced this time.

Have you gained or lost respect for any format holders in this pre-launch period?

I lost respect for Sony over the PS2 and that feeling of 'Fantavision: is that it? This is the future?' remains like a hangover into the next gen. Rallisport, Munch* and Halo reminded me what day one excitement was all about.

And, ultimately, do you believe what they're claiming?

Nope. But that's not the point is it... They're not making the claims for me or the majority of people on rllmuk. They're aiming the quotes at the majority of the console buying public who don't know the difference between real time and render and couldn't give a cel how many processors are in parallel or armed combat against each other. To that end I think that Sony's render splendour wins the battle in the short term, seeing PGR3 running may well shift the odds back in the Xbox's favour.

*ok I admit it didn't last all that long with this one... But a new Oddworld game was a must buy then as now.

1. I'm yet to make up my mind, but the Revolution's (confirmed) features are sounding quite appealling - and if the price point is similar to the Gamecube's launch price, then that'll make it much more tempting.

2. I've lost respect for Microsoft. Many of the "features" of the more expensive pack are real red herrings, in my opinion. For Sony and Nintendo, I've gained a little respect, but given the way they've treated the European market recently, that's not much of a feat.

3. A definite "I'm not sure".

I agree. Before the packs were announced, MS seemed more determined regarding their "big things" for the console. Now they've doubled back on the importance of the hard drive and Live to the equation, to an extent.

1. At present it's impossible to judge, but Microsoft have a big advantage with their online gaming, regardless of the power of each console.

2. Nope. Every generation of consoles has it's share of rumours and gossip and this is no different. I'm very intigued by the online plans by Nintendo.

3. I believe their technical specifications, but with any console, you'll only find out what they are capable of doing later in their life cycle.

And I'll be buying the 360 at launch regardless. Possibly the others depending on how they perform.

My digi cam doesn't really work well with text but I've taken pics of Pages 1 and 2.

I can do scans of the pic when my bro is back from work. I just rummaged through his room and he's got one. If you wait an hour or so I'll get scans sorted.

Xbox 360 - the conference had a weird iPod/MTV feel to it which kind of alienated me as an older gamer. They're going for the beautiful people with their push of the console

Yup. I'm not even an older gamer and I feel both alienated and annoyed. Stop it with XTREEEEME shit, you nobbers.

Maybe I just feel alienated because of the beautiful aspect...

Well ultimately Sony is winning the masses over with all that pre-rendered gumpf from E3. We can all see this bears no relation to actual games, but it doesn't stop the "average Joe" on the street believing it. Even with the 260 in the shops by Xmas, it just seems like Sony can say "Our's is 10 times more powerful and endorsed by God himself" and people buy into that.

If you could buy one of the next gen consoles, which would it be and why - or have you yet to make up your mind?

Well, eventually I'll probably end up with all of them, just like this time around. Right now I'll be getting a 360, I guess simply because I really like the look of some of the upcoming games, and I like the "always on the network" thing that MS have done, and it's (hopeful) media playing facilities. i.e replicatling that of a chipped Xbox by streaming files from a pc

Have you gained or lost respect for any format holders in this pre-launch period?

It's not like I held them in high regard, but the slagging match between MS and Sony has been pathetic. Trying to pick tiny holes in the processing power of each console, or the design to show how each is clearly vastly superior is amazingly tiresome. There were plus's and minuses from E3. Sony pre-rendered rubbish was annoying (-), it was brave of MS to show it finished HW and some non-finished (i.e ropey stuff) (+). Nintendo's idea to not get involved in any of this altogether (+) but lack of any titles to show (-)

And, ultimately, do you believe what they're claiming?

No, I believe they'll all play some great games, but all the specs and promises are taken with a large pinch of salt. I'll believe it when I see it/play it with my own eyes/fingers
