Zelda: Twilight Princess

I want nothing at all to detract from the sense of wonderment when I start playing the game. I already know more than I want to from the odd glimpse of screenshots as I quickly scroll past them. If I go to one of the Wii preview event things, I'm going to have to try hard to avert my gaze from any Zelda stuff. And it's not the storyline that makes Zelda games special.

I'd like to know what you mean Cyhwuhx when you say the trailer is not sincere. Do you mean it's a mis-representation of what the game is really like/about?

I mean, you've obviously played it so just wondered if you could say a little more, without spoiling or breaking any NDAs?

.::: It's trying to be overly epic. It doesn't fit. OOT isn't epic, it's the sum of its parts that makes it epic (orchestration is terrible in OOT and the dialogue is some kind of shorthand of whatever they wanted to convey). However if you ran across Hyrule Field with a giant Leever coming at you it does manage to strike that epic string. (I didn't like OOT in general, but there are some scenes and events that are done well.) Watching this trailer just seems like they went overboard in forcing you to believe it is epic. It's no circumstantial thing anymore, no more accidental adventure. It seems determined to prove that it will be the best Zelda, and I'm afraid that might prove to be its downfall.

ICO (in terms of feel) for instance has this circumstantial effect, mainly because it has a focus and lets the rest gently flow around it. TP might be too blunt in that respect. Zelda's and other Nintendo games usually are, they lack some subtlety, whether it's in tutorials, hints or gameplay. I'm afraid that bluntness combined with a forced feeling of 'realistic' grandeur will make the game drown in its own commercialism.

In short it's like Zelda is becoming kitsch, instead of just being art.

That really is a completely meaningless phrase, isn't it? I'm genuinely struggling with it.

.::: Considering I have been explaining the same thing in various forms, I'm not surprised. Oh well carry on, it's not that it matters to you anyway.

With you completely on this. I think its time to stop reading or watching anything about / from the game, possibly even the additional 50 pages in this thread, before the game is released.

o/\o

To me, it just looks like you're trying to find reason to not like, Cy.

.::: Absolutely. I want to hate games. FFS. What's next I'm a Microsoft fanboy? Havn't had that one thrown at me yet. I give up. Choke on it for all I care.

I stopped myself from reading the Edge hands-on preview as I felt it was giving too much away about the start of the game. I sometimes wish that I hadn't read so much about certain games before their release so will be exercising some restraint with Zelda.

cyhwuhx, are you trying to say that nintendo are deliberatley attempting to make the game feel epic through the trailer, when in reality it's not like that at all?

seems a bit of an odd thing to do, to lie to us all like that, if that's the case.

I think Cyhwuhx's comments made perfect sense, and whilst I don't think I'll really agree with them when I come to play it, I do think the way everyone's jumped on him for having the temerity to post honestly about a game is stupid.

I know for a fact that some people are reluctant to post about certain stuff (read: Wii) on here because they know what the reaction will be and can't be arsed with it, and that's rather sad.

I just meant that it doesn't mean anything. Like a 16 year old's poem, struggling to find words to abstract a meaningless concept. ;)

He's right about the hints, though, what's the point of a puzzle where somebody goes:

"Hey, do you have something square for this collage?"

"I've seen a square of cloth lying around on the beach."

"You got a square of cloth! Do you think anyone wants it?"

It kind of turns a search-and-retrieve thing into a simple errand-running task.

You came into this thread and said you don't like Zelda. You then proceeded to slag off Twilight Princess. Did you honestly think that you weren't going to be berated for it?

But he's commenting on the difference between the game and it's trailer. It's a trailer. You can't make that epic in the way he wants the game to, so you have to do it in a blunt way.

Hmm, if the puzzles are clever enough, I don't think is a problem. It avoids the old, "search everything in the room until you find something useful" tedium. Some of Zelda's puzzles are clever enough to be suitably challenging and thought provoking, even when you know what items are involved. I do agree though, that if the puzzles are just fetch and carry (like some of the ones in WW), then yes it's a bit cheap.

Yeah, that's about it. I've got nothing against telling me I need to get the key from the top of the island for this old dude, as long as that's not the whole puzzle. Give me some cliffs to navigate and some sort of dangerous leaping at least.

It's not in Slow-mo with 'Mad World' playing in the background.

I still don't get that. Butch shootimen set to the emo national anthem? Whose bright idea was that?

Posted this in the retro folder just now, but it'll probably be a week before it gets an answer:

Does anyone have a summary of the differences between the GC & Wii versions of Zelda? I haven't preordered a Wii, but having only recently read the discussion thread on Twiglet Princess, it looks quite tasty & I'm now wanting to play it on launch day.

That's not what I'm saying and you know that. I would never just have a go at you for nothing.

You youyrself have said you don't like the Zelda games, which is fair enough. But your esoteric posts smack of someone looking for reasons not to like a game.

At least to me they do, anyway.

Cyh, are you saying that the creators are trying to live up to hype or the legacy of the Zelda series?

I think I see what you're suggesting - in my mind GTA 3 was an excellent game with an atmosphere that Rockstar North couldn't hope to recapture in subsequent games because they were aware of the anticipation and expectations surrounding the sequels... I suppose in a way it hurt their own inspirations because with San Andreas and Vice City (and others may not agree) they created games that they thought the people wanted, rather than the game they invented. Which was GTA 3.

So in my opinion GTA 3 will always be the best of the series because the other games felt so forced and expected, whereas GTA 3 was a total breath of fresh air. If you see what I mean.

If this is what you mean then I share your concern, but to be honest Nintendo haven't given us any reason to doubt before now.

The Wii version is identical, except that:

1) You have Wii controls only, obviously

2) There's a 16:9 option, although I think both do progressive scan

3) Link is right-handed instead of left-handed by default, so the levels are mirrored compared to the GC version (this was done to reflect the handedness of Wii users, with the remote in their right hand; apparently you can swap it back to left handed too, which was nice of them)

Are you like super cereal? That is highly bizzare if true. You're pulling my leg, right? :o

Twiglet Princess

Please let that be a typo. ;)

Heh, it was intentional ;)

So there are no puzzles or sections that are Wii specific, the whole range Link's Wii powered actions are recreated on the GC? Think I'll just get the GC version then, as none of the other Wii games are ringing my bell.

Oh right, no fishing. That's annoying!
