What Song Are You Listening To Right Now?™

Been digging Judee Sill's self titled album, a sad, beautiful and brilliant record. 70s California folk. Youtube doesn't seem to throw up many studio takes unfortunately.

For those unfamiliar with Judee, she led a troubled life to say the least- death of parents, abusive stepfather, heroin addiction, prostitution, armed robbery, prison. There's a feeling of sins being washed, melodically and thematically on this album. There's also lots of talking to God, but don't let that put you off.

'Once a demon lived in my brow,

I screamed and wailed and I cursed out loud,

And I sailed through the clouds on ten crested

cardinals

To guard my battleground,

But I laughed so hard I cried. . . '

Well worth checking out especially if your into Joni/Gene Clark/Nick Drake.

Also, I've finally gotten into Brian Eno after years of avoidance (always associated him with Bowie/Talking heads, two I'm not fond of). His album with Byrne is still mind blowing.

That's how i feel about Mates of State; they're too cute to be real.

Oh ha, blimey yes; exactly the same deal with those two. It's odd, sort of unfair to other acts in a way I suppose, yet I just can't help but vicariously feel (whether imagined or no) some extra element of, dunno, like some emblematic romance in the complexion of the music of bands-who-are-also-couples. I don't like to think I'm imagining it though, or simply ascribing something wished for; I do believe it's there. Surely it has to be.

Anyways. I woke up way too early this morning after just 3 hours of restlessness and couldn't seem to get back to sleep, so I've been sat under a blanket with coffee and a book and a big 'low-key' playlist on shuffle. A few of the songs (or artists if I couldn't find the song on YT):

Listening to Parov Stelar (Chambermaid Swing) which makes my taste seem far more alternative than it actually is. I'm usually just listening to the same reliable bands I've liked for years now that most people have heard of like Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, Interpol and Muse.

I'm liking this "Electro-Swing", though.

Went back and had some fun with the Everything Everything album tonight. It's nice. Feels safe too, which is useful at the moment - it's pretty-sounding and it has a sort of otherland-ish quality to it which I look for a lot in music, but it doesn't latch on and swoop about with your emotions like so much of the great odd dreamy-scape stuff does, it just bobs along with its peculiar sound and lets you tag along gazing out the window at your leisure. :) It still tugs at various bodily strings, but it does so in a poppy sorta way that's comfortably distinct from the treacherous deep end of the pool. (Apologies - I do love a mixed metaphor or two.)
