Not sure how he thinks it's not a disaster. The club will lose at least £15-20m, it limits what players you can buy as the top players only want Champions League clubs, it pisses the fans off as we like Champions League football, it pisses the players off they they want to play at the highest level and it means we'll be playing stupid fixtures on a Thursday which causes nothing but disruption to weekend fixtures.

There are no positives to not finishing in the top 4. Not finishing in the top 4 is a disaster.

I love the assumption that Europa qualification is a given

Indeed. 4th or as low as possible if not please. Fuck football on a Thursday and more importantly on a Sunday.

In fairness, how many Saturday 3pm kick offs do we have in a season anyway? 10? Can't be many more than.

Noticed a brilliant comment on f365 about the PHW story just now that basically went along the lines of why does it matter if we qualify for the CL or not; it's not like that £25mill goes into player purchases or keeping ticket prices down.

Man's got a point.

True. But imagine the regular Sundays added to the odd live game and Monday night game and all that. It's all messed up.

Also a very good point.

To be honest the type of players we buy aren't exactly bought with the lure of Champions League football anyway. Gervinho had it at Lille. It might have some impact (Arteta said it was a big draw) but won't make a huge difference. It won't help but it's not a big deal. It's not like we are after Messi and he won't do without CL for one season.

I doubt the Ox or Leroy Jenkins would have turned us down if we finished fifth last year.

Given the choice, It's a bit of a toss up between winning the Carling Cup & the Europa league, but I'd certainly rather win the FA cup than the Europa shit.

If we aren't gonna finish in the top 4 I'd much rather finish 6th and out of the Euro qualifying spots altogether.

Arsenal fans turn noses up at Europa League, proving that beggars can indeed, be choosers.

Honestly, you guys, I think a decent run in the Europa League would be good for Arsenal. Obviously it's not as lucrative or desirable as the Champion's League but if that's the level we're at, then there's no reason not to go for it. We'll have to play a few league games on Sundays? Crying rivers here.

"We are hanging on in there, no more." (Peter Hill-Wood on the club's current position)

"From a financial point of view, not qualifying for the Champions League is quite a blow.

"We have been planning for not qualifying every year, so it's not a disaster, but it would be nice if we could."

I think this is a disgraceful comment, he should be ashamed. He should be outlining an agenda for improvement rather than rolling over and shrugging his shoulders. Nice if we could? Jesus Christ  .

It's not lucrative in the slightest and being in a half empty ground as we battle away with FC Toblerone or some shit really isn't what European football is supposed to be all about. If we can't cope with the Champions League then imagine the strain of hacking our way through all those potential games will be like. It really doesn't bare thinking about and Peter Hill-Wood farting on about it isn't helping.

Not sure FC Toblerone will make Europe this season, they have a lot of highs and lows.

I think we'd struggle in the Europa League, to be honest. We go down to teams like Swansea and Fulham but we must've been one of the few teams to beat Barcelona last year in the CL. So it seems we get complacent against so-called lesser opposition.

I do think next seasons transfer window (Jan) might be quite good for us. We cleared out a lot of deadwood in the last one but there's still a bit of deadwood hanging about.

To go all the way in the UEFA Pub Cup, don't you have to play something like 17 games or more? Our paper thin squad couldn't cope.

Before money ruined football, I'd have been really looking forward to something like the old UEFA Cup or the Cup Winners Cup but playing all sorts of tat from Europe in a competition that means sod all doesn't appeal in the slightest. Should we even qualify for it, the fans will vote with their wallets you just wait and see. We'd probably average 25,000-30,000 max.

Can I interest anyone in some good news (for a change)?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jan/18/jack-wilshere-return-arsenal-ankle

"Wenger has made it clear that he does not intend to strengthen his squad in January any further than the short-term loan acquisition of Thierry Henry from New York Red Bulls and so Wilshere has come to resemble a star new signing in waiting."

Srsly though, I really hope we don't rush him back. He's got 15 years left in him if he's looked after, we don't want to risk that to get him back for 3 games in February.

Anyway enough reminiscing about when we were good.

Boom.

on Thomas Vermaelen (calf)

At the moment I don’t think he will make it for Sunday. Let’s hope we have a good surprise. Let’s see how he develops. There may be a test. At the moment we just go day by day but he looks short.

Pow

on Mikel Arteta (calf)…

He has no chance. The earliest for him is Aston Villa.

Smash

on Thierry Henry…

He will have a test on Saturday. He has a calf problem.

And the long termers.

on Jack Wilshere (ankle)…

There is positive news about him because he is back to running after he had a little setback with the inflammation of his bone. He is able to go outside and practice but he is a few weeks away.

on Bacary Sagna (ankle) and Kieran Gibbs (groin)...

Both of them are about two to three weeks away.

on Francis Coquelin (hamstring)…

He is three, four or five days away from full training. I did not see him on Thursday but he is not far away. He could be available for Aston Villa.

on Lukasz Fabianski...

He is fit again.

on Carl Jenkinson (back)…

He is like Wilshere. He is back running but it will be a few weeks.

on Andre Santos (ankle)...

He is two months away. He is progressing well. We planned 12 weeks and he is on schedule.

Still at least we have an easy game on Sunday.
