So do I, we controlled the game better in the second half, and I thought chamakh was one of our best players, he had no real support for most of the game but he kept his workrate up which was top notch and even held the line well. He needs games and support and he'll be fine.

Didn't see the match but not a bad result seeing as it was almost a second string team we fielded. Reading some of the match reports today it sounded like we were woeful. Are the papers just going overboard, or were we that bad?

Totally overboard, for the most part - there were parts in the first half where the back five looked a bit wobbly, but then we had Song playing out of position. Second half we controlled the game effectively without playing particularly well.

Overall I thought United looked worse against Basle - they also fielded a semi-second string team and looked really shaky in places. But then that doesn't fit with pre-ordained narrative of a 'team in crisis' that's circulating the British media currently.

So City are after RVP to replace Tevez, apparently.

Wish City's idiotic and completely unsustainable brand of economics would just fuck off already.

He speaks!

Arsenal's owner, Stan Kroenke, has given his full support to the club's manager, Arsène Wenger, who has come under pressure during the team's difficult start to the season.

The team are 13th in the Premier League, with only two wins from six matches, but Kroenke told the Daily Telegraph: "I have tremendous confidence in [Arsène]. He is one of the great managers in the world. Arsène is one of my favourite people I have met in the last 20 years. He is a great person and I love the way he handles himself. He is a very intelligent guy."

Kroenke described the sale of Fábregas as an issue between the manager and the midfielder, adding: "I like the kid [Fábregas] but I'm not going to change his mind. Arsène made the decision.

The kid. I love it.

Reading that Kroenke interview it's pretty obvious he doesn't know the first thing about football. He might as well not have bothered opening his mouth as the whole article is a big puff piece about how amazing we are and what a wonderful job everyone is doing. Hold the front pages! If he's going to talk, why not talk about where another £30m has vanished to, or if he plans to take a dividend? I wouldn't trust the guy with a sausage let alone the football club I follow.

We have an owner (Stan) & CEO (Ivan Gazidis) who don't know the first thing about football, so it's a recipe for disaster. Gazidis is a businessman and the clubs new found naivety in the transfer market is down to this idiot. I cannot stress how important it is that Dein comes back or Gazidis is replaced by someone who actually understands football. Gazidis is running Arsenal as if it's a branch of Tesco's.

Just playing Devil's advocate for a minute, who operates the equivalent role at Man Utd? That David Gill guy? Is he a football man?

I think people are being exceptionally harsh on Kroenke and Gazidis. Firstly I don't think you need to be a football man to operate in these roles. Kroenke should meet with the AST, declare his plans for the club, answer some questions on funding and declare his intentions on dividends. Other than that the chairman needs to stay the fuck away from the football side.

Gazidis is a football executive and has been (in the US anyway) since 1994, helping set up MLS. I'm not too sure what David Dein would do differently. Could he compete better with Chelsea and Man City's unlimited money? Find players that nobody had heard of, despite simply signing players that Wenger instructed him to? David Dein is a lucky fucker. His reputation is being enhanced simply because he was in charge while Arsenal were good, and now is not in work, so people put two and two together and get five. OK he was instrumental in hiring Wenger, i'll give him that.

If Wenger felt either of these two were making things difficult i'm sure he would be able to take up a role somewhere else. As it is he seems happy to continue.

Dein has the contacts & respect of everyone in the game. He was also efficient and prolific at getting the players Wenger wanted. At times we had signed players before the media were even aware we were in for them, that's how good he was. There were very few bidding wars for players we signed because it was all hush-hush.

The way the club tried to sign Jagielka & particularly Schwarzer was embarrassing. And the late sales of Nasri & Fabregas was because the club thought they'd get more money for them towards the end of the transfer window, that was a business decision. We'd have got the same amount of money if the club were firm with Barcelona at the start of the window. In the end we let Fabregas go for the price Barcelona wanted to pay! Since the sale they even had the cheek to say they under-paid for his services!!! The Cesc situation It totally disrupted pre-season for the club and it could have been done months earlier. Arteta & other signing's would then have had a pre-season with the club which would have benefitted everyone.

When asked questions I often think Gazidis tells people what they want to hear rather than the truth. He was brought in to help the club expand the 'brand' overseas. One of my friends was interviewed by Gazidis (for his final interview) for a the position at the club. He was due to head up the commercial side but his job offer was withdrawn once Stan became the majority shareholder.

Whenever you post anything at all, Steve, I just change every other word in my head to [citation needed].

It's amazing how angry you can get at how you imagine the club is being run.

I talk to people that either work at the club or for the club in some capacity. I base my views on what I hear or know. And yes I do get pissed off at how the club is being run. We have been going backwards for ages and I am not too happy about it. I am not blessed with being able to explain myself eloquently so I just type like an angry loon. But you wouldn't have me any other way, right? 8)

The Arsenal thread is great. We range from your "doomed! we're all doomed I tells ya!" all the way along the scale to carlito's "hey guy, chill out, everything's fine, Arsenal are in good shape and Diaby's actually a really good footballer."

Massive winkey thing all round.

Which international break? Nobody knows.

Anyway, see, you guys? Squillaci is fit. And they say our medical team doesn't know what it's doing. I hope Wenger has the good sense to keep Song at CB. Squillaci facing up to Adebayor is too ridiculous a concept to even imagine. (EDIT: Someone already said that. Ha)

I agree but that means Frimpong will be let loose in a north London derby. Lord help us/him/Modric's shins/knees/groin.

Numbers.

Lots of them.

http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/results-for-the-year-ended-31-may-2011

Financial results for year ended 31 May 2011

Group turnover was £255.7 million (2010 - £379.9 million). Reduction was due to the expected lower level of property sales activity.

The sale of apartments at Highbury Square is in its final stages, with 69 sale completions in the year (2010 - 362) generating £30.3 million of revenue from property (2010 - £156.9 million).

Operating profit in the property business was £12.6 million (2010 - £15.2 million) including the write back of part of a previous impairment provision in respect of the Queensland Road development site.

Operating profit (before exceptional costs, depreciation and player trading) in the football business was £45.8 million (2010 - £56.8 million) with commercial gains offset by increased wage costs.

Loss from player trading of £14.7 million (2010 - profit of £13.6 million) with no significant disposals of registrations in the year.

Group profit before tax was £14.8 million (2010 - £56.0 million).

The Group's property business continues to be debt free and generating surplus cash for the Group. The overall level of Group net debt had been reduced to £97.8 million (2010 - £135.6 million) at the balance sheet date.

Doesn't include summer business. Some other bits from Twitter.

#Arsenal still have 18 Highbury Sq properties & queensland rd to bank. Will create bonus of up to £40m property profits to invest in squad
cash balances up to £160m (2010 £128m). Gross debt slightly reduced to £258m (2010 £263m).
2011 profit before tax of £15m (2010 £56m) split between: football £2m (2010 £45m) and property development £13m (2010 £11m).
Main reason for £43m fall in #AFC football profit is lower profit on player sales £6m (2010 £38m) & wages growth to £124m (2010 £111m).
2011 revenue £256m (2010 £380m) split between football £225m (2010 £223m) & property £30m (2010 £157m).
Most striking thing in #Arsenal results is wage bill: £124.4m. Only £29m less than #MUFC and United paid £10m in bonuses. £19m basic diff.
Arsenal wages/income ratio up to 55.2%, highest since 2005/06.

And I think this sums up the inevitable reaction perfectly.

Arsenal are the only organisation for whom posting a profit is a pr disaster!!

Bit of a weird feeling at the moment. Since I can remember I've gone into a new season genuinely believing we can win the league or any given trophy. Every win for our rivals was a blow but having seen City and United win today it sunk in that it makes absolutely no difference to us. Harsh but true, I think.

So what do we think we can expect this year? A cup? A heroic run in the CL? CL qualification for next year?

I'll still wait for the day when everyone has lost at least once, I've been obsessed with that since the Invincibles. I almost think that's the most important thing. I wouldn't put much money on us finishing in the top four, although with a fit squad I think we're capable of doing it.

Afraid to say that I reckon fourth place alone would be a success, I expect nothing more. Going in to the Derby tomorrow it's a sobering thought that the results against the Spuds, in isolation, may well be the most important moments of our season.

I am not happy at all with our team today and I have a bad feeling in typical Spurs fashion even though we are parhaps stronger than you these days, I can see you beating us today.

Gervinho vs Walker is where this game could be won today as VDV will not give Walker any help at all.
