The thing that I'm becoming increasingly annoyed about is all of the talk of a "marquee" signing. Wenger doesn't do one big major signing really, theres always some sort of risk involved, the last big signing, Arshavin, had only really appeared on peoples radars the previous season in the UEFA Cup and at the European Championships, we'd seen very little of him prior to that and there was a risk he wouldn't take to the Premiership. Half a season aside, one could argue that he hasn't taken to the Premiership too well, despite some fairly solid statistics.

Before that? His two best ever signings, Vieira and Henry were squad players who were getting no where in Italy, his previous high prospect signing, Overmars, had a poor injury record and his career looked like it could have been petering out because of it.

Getting some future European star thats got a high profile at a young age, such as Hazard, would have been great, and arguments in favour of it are more than valid but really, did any of us expect it to happen?

Instead we've apparently spent well in most area's that needed addressing, added some much needed experience and ability to the squad without a Silvestre or Squillaci type deal in sight. It may have been done at the death but we don't really know the entire situation, only what SSN (who's whole business is to make deadline day exciting) has told us (and other news sources admittedly), but deals for some of the players may have been discussed prior to what happened at the weekend.

He always sold at (basically) the right moment in the past though, which is not what he's done with Fabregas and probably not Nasri either. We've never really had to replace a player in his prime before, always someone on the downwards slope.

Well yes, and I agree but I'm personally surprised at him signing someone like Arteta who can fit straight into the first team and is already used to the league so only really has to get to know his team-mates, for me Arteta is a very non-Wenger signing, and whilst we were being linked to the likes of Hazard I don't think it was ever likely to truly happen and he'd of gone for somebody who's public persona is a few steps down from that kind of player.

But Hazard is definitely a smaller name than Fabregas. I mean, someone like say, Messi, would be ridiculous but bringing in someone less famous than Fabregas still allows some massive names to come in.

I'm not complaining anyway.

I think Arteta was always a possibility to replace Cesc, from that point of view it makes sense cos Wenger has liked him for some time and the price was right. It also makes the Benayoun signing more agreeable, if he'd been signed as our only new face in midfield he'd have been on a hiding to nothing.

I don't give a crap about a "marquee signing" personally. I don't think I've ever used that dumb expression. I was pretty much ready to cut my wrists last night though when it looked like our only midfield acquisition was going to be Yossi Benayoun on loan, when we have eleventy-billion pounds sitting in a big pot.

I'm perfectly pleased with the players we've brought in, and we've obviously strengthened where it's needed. We have ended up with a hefty profit yet again though, so I think a lot of people will want that to be spent on contract renewals and/or January signings, rather than put into Stan's rainy day fund.

I'm not happy about the farcical way we've conducted our business this summer, and I don't believe we've done the best we could have, but that's done with now, and I'm looking forward to seeing how we get on. A lot of people will still be writing us off for a CL spot but I think it's eminently do-able; for all the jizz being spewed in the direction of King Kenny, I wasn't impressed at all by Liverpool when they played us. Don't get me wrong, I think they've mostly bought well and if Carroll lays off the beers and starts playing to his potential then they could be a real handful. There's potential there. But right now, they don't scare me. I also think that even with Mata, Chelsea still look like a pretty tired old side overall. I can't see us competing with the Manchester clubs, but I think top four is totally do-able.

Again, I agree Hazards not as big a name as Fabregas but he's still a pretty big name, mostly because of FM until last season. I do think it was also down to him to stay at Lille, obviously they wanted him to stay but he's seemed fairly loyal to them for a while now and provided they can keep competing I can see him staying there a bit longer.

Yeah I agree. Despite what Sky say the top four places are only really being competed between five teams and I haven't seen too much from Liverpool that particularly scares me yet. They look incredibly ordinary against us for a start and I still don't think Carroll is likely to get enough goals. An awful lot hinges on whatever centre half combination they go for. With any luck these new signings will bust us out of this dreadful run we're on and we can get some form going.

In fairness things can only improve after the past few weeks (years! LOL) we’ve had. But yesterday was a good day and an acknowledgement from AW that his experiment has not worked out – which is kind of sad. I’m looking forward to this season now.

I dunno if it proves project youth has failed as wenger has never been able to keep the team together but it shows some intent really as someone like Arteta is just what we need. These other "marquee" signings aren't proven in the premiership whereas Arteta will jump straight in with years of prem experience. The big german has great international experience and our left back may be a risk but he's not young and has been around so who isn't happy with these signings? The fact that we have gone out and bought all these players is such a shock but I also think it's good business. I must also say that Benny is a very shrewd signing. He's a good player who will give us another option to the directness of Walcott and gervinho. We will definitely see a counter attacking arsenal this season and hopefully see a rock solid defence with our aquisitions. I'm buzzing now!

the only thing your new signings will be busting is a hamstring

Arsenal guys, do any of you constantly go into the United, Liverpool etc. threads and behave like utter dicks or are we the only team that has to put up with it?

I was wondering that too. I sometimes read the other threads and very rarely post in them so can't imagine going in there and posting shit. But then I wouldn't walk into a rival teams pub and overhear a conversation before adding my own hilarious comment. But then i'm not a massive dickhead so perhaps not the best person to answer.

Isn't there supposed to be a "gentlemans agreement" in place in regards to that kind of behaviour in the club threads though? the "Football Thread" being fair game, but no trolling the club threads?

But then I suppose the guilty parties would have to be "gentlemen" for the agreement to apply in the first place?

No. I don't think you have to accept it as part of the culture at all. If it's all well and good with you and your mates then fair enough. But you behave like an anti social arsehole with absolutely no awareness or subtlety. Hey, you're not even close to being funny or relevant either. You pretty much just fucking suck in every way mate :) .
