I would definitely be happy with Arteta, I'd even accept Benayoun as long as we get Arteta too.

I can't help but wish that we went for some sort of super duper player though, someone like Hazard or Gotze etc... I mean we are talking about a replacement for Cesc or Nasri or both even.

Really we should be grateful that we came to our senses and went out and signed a few players rather than go back to the bad old days going way back to two days ago and before.

(I still want Cahill, especially if Spurs are gonna get him, or Samba. I've all but given up on a DM)

We don't need a like-for-like replacement for Cesc. We need to start building teams around 11 players instead of building them around one huge talent, and with these signings these last few days, it looks like that's what Wenger's doing. Otherwise we'll just end up in another situation where we win 80% of games with player x, and 30% of games when he's not there.

Quite. Let's get away from the early days of "get it to Bergkamp."

I agree with this. Although at some point, if we want to compete with the best in Europe (which should be our goal), we'll need to build a team around 5 or 6 huge talents. But that's a tale for another season.

If we get Benayoun and Arteta, then I think we can call the transfer window a success. We will have bought players, plugged holes and filled positions. Until the Fair Play rules come into play, we'll have to bide our time I think.

We should offer Bendtner + cash for Arteta. Everton are one of the sides in the Premier League I probably wouldn't mind seeing him at. Stoke can fuck off.

Sky reckon we offered Nik + cash and Everton said no, just cash

Whether it's true or not, we'll never know.

If Benayoun and Arteta go through, Wenger will have bought half a team in the last few days, all over the age of 25 in positions that needed strengthening, with tons of experience, and a couple with tons of Premier League experience.

And still people are bitching about it.

Seriously? People, in this thread at least, are "bitching" about the money we're spending. At the end of the day, Wenger promised to be "very active" in the transfer market this summer, but we're almost certainly going to end up having generated significantly more in sales than we've spent, yet again, as well as reducing the wage bill by a large amount.

I think you can think the likes of Mertesacker, Arteta and Park are good value, solid signings, while bemoaning the reluctance of the club to make any sort of positive net spend, ever. That's what the dissenting voices here are saying, and it's a totally valid criticism.

We should at least be replacing quality with quality. There isn't a player we could buy which can replace Cesc anyway I suppose, but you've got to work towards replacing the quality somehow even if it is changing the way you play and building a team around a few players rather than one.

We've signed a LB to replace our fisrt choice left back - good

We've signed a very good CB to plug a hole as half of the ones we have are shit - Very good

We've signed a South Korean forward from relegated Monaco who's off to the army in a couple of years - ok I suppose

We haven't replaced Cesc or Nasri though.

OK, I don't mean like for like, or build your team around individuals, but where's the replacement for that quality in the team?

Please no one say Benayoun.

He's an alright, slightly getting on, player Liverpool let go, player Chelsea are prepared to let go, injury prone, player.

Are we gonna stand by and watch Sp*rs get Cahill for £10 mill or so too?

The excitement of buying 3 players in one day (two days really) is wearing off fast and I'm feeling seriously underwhelmed at the moment.

Am I the only one?

Am I the only one?

No.

When everyone else was going mental a couple of weeks ago, I said I'd reserve judgment until the window shut.

Our midfield is massively weakened this season, compared to the one that wasn't good enough last year, and it now looks like we're relying on Yossi Benayoun to improve it. It's just not going to cut it. I don't see how anyone could look at Cesc and Nasri leaving for huge fees, Benayoun coming in, possibly just on loan at the last minute, and say they're happy with that. It's shambolic.

SSN says the interest in Arteta is over? No doubt you don't want to pay more than thirty quid.

Still, as mentioned previously, the way things have gone (switch to older players) really shows that Wenger is concerned himself.

This sums up how I feel at the moment:

"The real buzz amongst Arsenal fans this morning that we might see a signing along the lines of M'Villa, Vargas, Hazard or Martin. Now to hear that "all efforts" are being put into capturing Benayoun on loan really is a smack in the teeth. I expect Man City et al are quaking in their boots."

Why has this happened? We knew Cesc was going and by July knew Nasri was probably going too, and yet it seems there was no plan in place whatsoever to replace them, to the point where they're being replaced with two hours to go on deadline day with Yossi Benayoun on loan.

How on earth can anyone think that's acceptable? And where the hell has all the money gone?

I'm just praying something exciting happens out of nowhere in the next couple of hours, but at this point I'm really down in the dumps.

It is pretty poor. I was thinking we'd do a Hazard type deal, Arteta would have been welcome too I guess but Benayoun is a no go for me, that will put backs up more than bringing in no-one. I think we've done some OK/good business but not the flagship signing we wanted so there are still questions. Maybe we cancelled any deal for Arteta quickly to move on to a different target but I doubt it. Benayoun may be OK as a player but he's in no way what we wanted or rightly expected. I suppose the big targets could be literally unavailable but if it's a case of us wanting to bank big fees but not go on to spend the money then fans have a right to be cross. We've got some good players in but by no means the kind of names we really wanted.

Still time though.

You sound like a fucking Man City fan. ONLY THE BEST MOST EXPENSIVE PLAYER WILL DO. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE TEAM, I JUST NEED A BIG NAME FUCKING SIGNING.

Christ.

2003: RUMOUR MILL

A clutch of clubs are now being linked with Manchester City's England winger Adam Johnson, who might find his game-time a bit limited after the arrival of Samir Nasri. Stoke and Arsenal have been mentioned. Expect QPR to get involved once Neil Warnock hears he might be available.

I reckon City owe us a favour.

Sounds a lot like the old 'It'll damage our young players!' defence.

For the record, if we only sign Benayoun I'll be absolutely furious. It would be a real slap in the face for the supporters, especially after this weekend.

Johnson is a much better winger than Nasri. Maybe not a better player, but in that specific role he is.

He's more direct than anything we've got, Gervinho's potential not withstanding.

Signing Benayoun, especially on loan, would be asking for trouble from the fans IMO.
