If he's #11 does that mean Vela's definately off? Shame, wasn't really given much of a chance...

It just means that Vela won't be needing the squad number this season. I dunno, I guess Vela showed a few glimpses in the Carling Cup but not enough in the few "proper" games where he did feature. He's still only 22, maybe he could come back and do a job.

But i'm glad the squad is getting freshened up. Too many people happy to turn up and collect their massive wages. Need a few more people playing for their places in the team and their places at Arsenal. Need some hungry fuckers like Wilshere last year and Frimpong (if he can stay on the pitch) this year.

Does anyone else get the impression that Bendtner still hasn't agreed terms with anyone despite meeting with about a dozen clubs because he's an arrogant prick?

I was thinking that. I wonder if his demands and demeanour have talked him into a potential exit from Arsenal and out of a chance of signing elsewhere. If he stays, knuckles down and gets a chance I'll be happy though.

He wasn't but he lacked effort and bollocks whenever he played for the front side, IMO.

I get the impression that this isn't going to bother some players though. Arshavin doesn't seem to give a shit whether he plays or not, I can't imagine him fighting for his place, he'll happily sit on the bench for the rest of his career.

He looks like a proper "don't fuck with me" kind of defender. I like it.

My only worry is that I've heard he's also a "don't do any defending" kind of defender, but his scoring record stands up to that of many/most attacking midfielders.

Not sure what to make of this one, to be honest.

Did I hear somewhere that we're supposed to have made enquiries with regard to Juan Manuel Vargas? That'd be an interesting signing. Very good player - fast, skilfull, good crosser (both from open play and set pieces), versatile (plays all up the left and in midfield, though he was a bit shaky at left back for Fiorentina) and most definitely not one to take any shit. Seems/feels unlikely though, especially after the Santos signing.

Maybe. But then that's a common part of modern football. Money has taken over, with trophies a distant second.

Players won't ask for a transfer so they don't lose loyalty bonuses. They refuse to leave even if they never play unless someone can match their huge wages. And players play wonderfully well when their contract is up for renewal soon, before settling back into mediocrity (mentioning no names). The balance has shifted too far in favour of the players. Top players, who perform well should get paid well, I have no problem with that. But getting paid for doing nothing is obscene. Clubs have been too slow in getting performance related pay into players contract. I mean why should a player even get paid in full if they don't play?

The sooner we get rid of players who don't want to be here the better. I'm not talking about being life-long gooners but if you can't be motivated to be the best you can be and get the most out of your talent (while simultaneously becoming fantastically wealthy) then take your lazy greedy money hungry ass to another club.

Vela has already gone off on loan to Real Sociedad.

We're going to start counter-attacking again aren't we?

It'd be nice to get a bit of that back. Just the other day I was talking to a friend about how I miss the days when it seemed as though we were more likely to score from the other team's corners than they were...

Semi-official.

Arsenal has confirmed they have agreed terms with Werder Bremen to sign German international defender Per Mertesacker.

At 26, the 6ft 6in centre-back has significant experience at both club and international level.

Mertesacker has enjoyed eight seasons in the German top flight - five with Werder Bremen and three with Hannover 96 - making 221 league appearances in total and finding the net on 19 occasions. The former Werder Bremen captain also played 53 times in Europe for the Green-Whites, including the 2009 Europa League Final.

In 75 games for Germany, Mertesacker has helped his country to the Semi-Finals of the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and to the Final of the 2008 European Championship.

The deal is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

I like.

Arsenal statman Orbinho on Twitter has been reading my posts.

Surprised that Arsenal haven't been in for Kalou. Available, heavily linked in the past, Wenger a known admirer and probably cheap.
Plus Kalou has never been on the losing side when he has scored, a bit like Fabregas.
Only David Silva, Fabregas, Nani & Wilshere have created open play chances more regularly than Kalou. (Last 3 PL seasons Minimum 60 created)

Not the most exciting but would be a decent signing.

I'm going to be a Massive Racist again and point out a rather obvious problem with him. You're likely to get a game if we sign any more African players.

1613: Speaking of L'Orient, and not Leyton Orient, the French side have signed Arsenal forward Gilles Sunu. The 20-year-old, who joined the Gunners at the age of 15 but never played a Premier League game for the club, had been on loan there last season and has now signed a four-year deal.

Mmmm good point. Still when he comes back he'll be like...

It won't be M'Vila wearing number 8 anyway.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has cooled his interest in Rennes star Yann M'Vila, and promoted rookie midfielder Francis Coquelin to his first-team squad, after rejecting attempts from Lorient to re-sign him on loan.

Agreed. I actually +1'd your last post on him, but Rev makes a good point too (about the African Cup of Nations (incidentally, watch Frimpong get called up by Ghana if he starts playing regularly for us too)). All we'd probably be doing by signing him is ensuring that it'd be around Giftmas that RVP gets his first injury (if he lasts that long anyway).

Also, I just went on Frimpong's Wiki page to check I'd got his nationality right and it seems someone's been having a play with it...

Emmanuel Yaw Frimpong (born 10 January 1992) is a Ghanaian-born Pokemon who plays as a midfielder & has water base attacks. Frimpong has represented England at youth level & has since begun his journey from pallet town.

It carries on like that too...

Gossip seems to have gone from the more exotic names to Arteta quite heavily, so maybe he's the one. He has an injury record fit for us, that's for sure.

I think whatever happens we're going to end this transfer window with a huge negative net spend yet again. Although I'm happy with the signings, that - coupled with the absurd last-minute, too-little-too-late nature of the deals - leaves a pretty sour taste in my mouth.
