Looks like Mertesacker and Santos are signing according the Guardian. I'm not gonna lie and pretend I know much about them but Mertesacker is a German international and has to be better than Squillaci (although that can't be that hard!).

Other targets being mentioned however are not making me very happy, Malouda and Benayoun, I mean come on! Not bad players but hardly replacements for Nasri and Cesc. Why are we shopping in the bargain bins if there's £70 million to spend?

Because replacements for Cesc and Nasri aren't easy to get. Both of them combined are capable of getting 30 goals from midfield, not many players in the world can replace that. If you sold them at the start of the summer, then you could have replaced them. But the saga for both players dragged onto August, which is no time to be replacing them really. It would have been better if you took a few million quid less and had time to replace them. Now teams know you are desparate and are going to hike the prices up. Malouda and Benayoun wouldn't be bad signings. You need to improve your squad, and they would do that. Malouda at the start of last season was in fantastic form. Benayoun has never really had a chance at Chelsea due to injuries, but he was pretty decent at Liverpool.

Any truth in you enquiring about Sneijder?

Can't see that happening. If Man Utd can't pay his wages, then what chance Arsenal have got? I mean that was the sole reason Nasri left, because of the wage structure at Arsenal. So it wouldn't make sense to sell Nasri and sign Sneidjder.

I think the fee wouldn't be an issue, but if the reported stumbling block for his move to Man Utd was his wages then he's not going to be much happier with us. I think it's probably only people making rough connections between our need for a midfielder and Sneijder's apparent availability. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see him go to Utd tomorrow and if Arsenal do sign a midfielder it's far more likely to be someone domestic. I'd go so far as to say it will be Arteta or nobody.

I thought Sneijder and RVP didn't like each other (one article I read spoke of Sneijder repeatedly passing to Robben rather than RVP at the World Cup and arguing over free kicks). So I can't see it happening (in addition to us actually paying someone a shitload of money, or a star playing wanting to go to a team just spanked 8-2).

Great link on Twitter just now re Mertesacker and his speed:

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/southafrica2010/statistics/players/distanceandspeed.html

His top speed was quicker than C. Ronaldo in the last World Cup. And 6km/h quicker than John Terry.

Also, have a looksie how high up Gervinho and J.Y Park are. Clear to see what Wenger is trying to bring to the team.

Equal to Wayne Rooney? Or did I read that wrong?

Didn't the Premiership top speed list have Sol Campbell as #1 a couple of years back. God knows how they work it out.

Think he was 1 or 2, either ahead of or behind Theo. Was measured when he was training with us and supposedly one of the factors why Wenger re-signed him.

The thing with the list is, it's only as useful as the opportunities afforded-if Mertesacker is having to run 60 yards to catch a break away attacker, he's likely to get to a higher speed than Ronaldo who might not be able to do much running into space.

Still, useful to know.

No dude, top speed 31.50kph according to that page. Doesn't seem feasible.

Just seen the headings properly now-didn't work on phone just now.

But yeah, 31.5 is pretty quick but entirely feasible-a 10second 100metre runner will be doing about 25mph (if my maths is right), so makes some kind of sense that a professional footballer could do 20mph. Surpised Podolski is that quite though.

Another interesting rumour. We might even end up with four new signings!

Think 4 is the minimum to expect really.

Park, Santos, Mertesacker and A N Midfielder are minimums. Potential for 6 with Cahill still likely and a a defensive midfielder.

Really not sure how Vargas fits in with plans though-is a left-sided midfielder what we need?

It really is turning in to Football Manager, where you still have money to spend on the last day of the window, so you just make bids for 20 different players and see which ones get accepted. I think we'll only end up with one more tops after Santos, Park and Mertesacker. If Modric goes to Chelsea, I bet we end up with Benayoun.

Cahill's not happening. The poor guy's going to Spurs :(

We do really need him as I feel Dawson is only ever good when he plays with King or Gallas and they are never really fit.

Tomorrow is going to be very exciting for both our clubs and I have a feeling there could be some surprising signings for us both.

Bendtner might be staying, Chamakh might be going (on loan)

Oh God, please let it be true.

Earlier in the day reports in Denmark hinted that Bendtner would seal a move before tomorrow’s 11pm transfer deadline, after his father had claimed that today [Tuesday] would be a ‘good day.’

However, playing down his father’s optimism, the attacker revealed:

“My father always says that every day is good. If you call him again, I’m sure he’ll also say that Wednesday and Thursday will be good days too.”
