I suppose it's a signing at least, but the only way you could describe him as a continental defender is that he moves at roughly the speed of a continent shifting across the Earth's surface. That coupled with our high defensive line is a recipe for disaster.

He's got a lot of caps though.

have we actually signed him though? no announcements or anything yet.

It does seem odd that the only confirmation of an English team signing a German player from Germany is in a French newspaper.

Maybe they were just the first people willing to surrender the information?

Apologies for the lazy stereotyping, I'm just in that kind of mood (and consider myself to be allowed, bearing in mind that I have some French heritage).

Is there any player you want that isn't a superstar signing or do you have an excuse prepared for all perceived 'lesser' players? Shawcross, Barton, Parker, Benayoun etc. would be great for your squad, regardless of their shortcomings.

Shawcross would be an absurd signing, I just can't see how Ramsey (and thus others) would want to play in the same team as him and then instantly you've got conflict in the dressing room. Barton too, after all the shit he's put Arsenal players through, just wouldn't be accepted. Parker was never a solution. He was a name that was thrown around because he was a good player in a shit team that got relegated so the feeling was that he would be available, rather than for any real "he'd be good for Arsenal" type reason. It was desperation. Maybe he would be good for Arsenal, but he's certainly not high up the list.

Here's a thing about Mertesacker. It makes for unhappy reading. "Based on last season’s evidence alone, Mertesacker would be behind Johan Djourou in the pecking order."

Isn't buying a load of 'lesser' players how Liverpool ended up with their worst squad for about 20 years?

Pretty much, I +1'd you for that. We've had a shit load of dross come through. Players we thought might be good turned out to be worse than average. Cheyrou was a brilliant one, "The new Zidane". Biscan was a disaster, Traore was comic genius, Kewell never performed, Cisse looked cool. Champions league winners though!

Recently it's been Keane, Babel, Pennant, and what happened to Gonzalez a while ago? Scored on his debut then was awful.

Further back there's Meijer, Dundee, even Collymore.

It's all the fault of Graham Souness; he started the shitness :P

Arsenal should sign Cattermole. He's just the violent thug you need AND he hardly ever gets sent off (when you compare the severity of his challenges to his red card ratio).

No having owners that sold our best players to service their debt did. Whats Arsenel's excuse?

We've been buying shit for 20 years. Apparently Souness could have signed Roy Keane but he decided on someone else. Who, of course, turned out to be shit.

Souness, as a manager, really screwed the club.

Rioch signed Bergkamp, thus absolving him of blame for literally anything.

Perfectly true.

Nicklas Bendtner could be on his way out of Arsenal today, with his dad getting very optimistic.

"I have nothing to say about anything right now. Just let me say that it is a very, very good day today", Bendtner Snr told ekstrabladet.dk.

Interesting.

Reports in Denmark suggest Stoke could be the lucky club.

Stoke? Very, very good? How bad is it at Arsenal right now?

You're a fucking moron.

And you don't even know how to spell Graeme. Shit manager but one of our greatest players ever and a European Cup winning captain.

Goal.com linking us with Clint Dempsey from Fulham for £10m. Dunno what to think about that.

Panic buying is definitely the best way to run a football club.

EDIT: Although signing an American and a Korean does seem suspiciously brand-pushing, so maybe it does make sense.

Hang on. I said he was a shit manger. Correct. He really fucked things up for Liverpool. Are you going to deny that?

You're the child for not acknowledging this. Except you did? Because it's true.

Oh but thanks for telling me that he played for the club and won stuff I NEVER KNEW THAT. Douche.
