Didier Deschamps has confirmed that Marseille have rejected an Arsenal loan bid for midfield ace Lucho Gonzalez.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Stade Velordome all summer, but moves to Spain and Italy have never materialised.

A 30 year old I've never heard of and who no-one else wants on loan as Cesc's replacement. And we couldn't even tie that up!

He'd be a good signing for a couple of million. He's vastly experienced and has a reputation for not taking any shit.

Lucho is really good to be fair.

Is that right? Fair enough. Still..

Just read that a deal has been agreed for Hazard but I'm taking that with a pinch of salt.

I would have been quite excited about Hazard at the start of the summer, but since he would be the fifth wide forward joining to join the squad I'm having to temper my enthusiasm.

This would be the problem, yes.

Gervinho and Chamberlain can play centrally, and Campbell does too. And Walcott. And Arshavin, you'd probably see his best in the middle. We do have flexibility across the front, on paper. I really wish we'd buy a monster centre forward though. The players I've mentioned can play through the middle but don't.

Well contrary to accepted wisdom, you do win things with kids and today we'll demonstrate that by sweeping aside the pathetic challenge offered by Liverpool with a comprehensive and humbling mauling of their back four. Our fans might be grumps but I can tell you who's pissing their pants right now - Jamie Carragher. A stream of nervous urine trickling down his Lonsdale tracksuit bottoms and pooling his school shoes, simply at the thought of being put on his back end by the collective pace and power of our squad of olympic sprinters. "It'll be alright, Jamie. It'll be alright", they'll tell him as he shifts uncomfortably about on his bus seat. But it won't be alright. It won't be alright.

FUCK YEAH!

I'm off to the pub on my todd to watch this. This could be horrible. This could be wonderful. I shall drink lots of Guinness. That might help. kthxbye!

This thread is wierd, you are all sad because a player left that you bought as a 16 year old, but you don't want anymore 16 years olds. You want old, experienced players, like Squillaci, who you don't like; or 20-25 million pound players, which is about what you got for Adebayor and Kolo Toure; or mid valued (10-15 million) but not like Arshavin or Rosicky. Seems a bit all over the place really :)

Price and age don't matter really, any one of the buys could be great or could be terrible. Lucho *should* be a decent buy, but not as good as he would have been 2 years ago, and if you are buying someone from Marseille/Lille then Ayew or Sow would be my shouts I think.

I don't know how you've never heard of a player who's starred for Porto and has played for Argentina fairly regularly. He dropped off the radar a bit at Marseille because they're not as powerful in Europe but he's not shite. And he was linked with loads of clubs this summer but he said he didn't want to leave.

Offering a loan deal is mind boggling though.

This is so true.

That's how we always open the bidding. When that's rejected we'll come back with £200,000 and by the time we have a bid accepted the player's either gone to Man City or retired.

Seriously, have you secretly hired Rick Parry? If so you should bust him out because his ties doesn't deserve to be hidden away.

It's not really accepted wisdom, is it? It's just something that Alan Hansen was famously wrong about.

He's still trying to come to terms with it sixteen years on...

It is too simple to say you will win nothing with a kid in goal, but it is a monumental challenge to ask a defence with an average age of 22 to go into games with the likes of Arsenal and Spurs.

Anyhoo, after a dull opening weekend, this thread and the Liverpool one should be tasty in a couple of hours.

Personally I don't mind us buying these young players as occasionally you'll unearth a Fabregas. What's annoying is having a manger who'll sit in a press conference and with a straight face tell the fans that they're 'top quality signings'. I mean, he can't believe this can he? Mata is a top quality signing. Modric is a top quality signing. No offence to the guys, but a couple of teenagers from League 1 aren't in the same bracket. Youth team development and first team strengthening are mushed up into some ungodly mess at the moment.

I've no problem with us buying experience either, just not the ponderous dinosaurs Wenger purchases. More Remi Gardes, less Silvestres.
