I can't see us signing a striker or central midfielder, to be honest. Weirdly, I'm not sure we'll see a left-back come in either. We might get in someone like Mata if Nasri and/or Fabregas goes, but I think Oxlade-Chamberlain has no real bearing on that (I think Wenger wanted him anyway). I can see us signing a central defender, but it might well be that we do as we did last year, and Wenger goes out and signs someone other than we've heard all the rumours about on the basis that Wenger refuses to pay the ridiculously inflated prices that come with an English club selling to another.

So yes, I'm saying I think it's just as likely that we end up with Squillacinho than Samba/Mertesacker/Cahill/Jagielka/I don't really care anymore (but that was the order in which I like the idea of them).

The difference between Wenger and us, I always think, is that he still has faith in his current crop, and sees the best case scenario rather than the worst. He doesn't look at van Persie, Chamakh and Vela and see a brilliant player who's an injury waiting to happen, a man who nearly offers a different dimension but only apparently has the stamina to play half a season (ever?) and a unproven lightweight, he sees one of the best players in the world, plan B (not the singer) and a finisher par excellence who just hasn't caught fire yet.

We all forget about Rosicky (who I still think could be useful, and looked good in preseason, but I struggle to trust), but he doesn't. We all assume Nasri and Fabregas are going, but he doesn't, and also believes that our current bunch can probably replace them if they do. We all want another defender because we don't trust our current crop to learn from their mistakes and stay fit, but he hopes and believes they will.

I maintain that he's basically a principled optimist rather than just stubborn and myopic (though there could be argued to be a substantial overlap at this point), but that doesn't change the fact that his actions (both tactically and in the transfer market) worry me at times. The thing is, does anyone think we'd be better if he went anywhere? I can't think of anyone I'd rather have in charge, I just wish he had a bit more of a mean streak (in the temperament sense, rather than the penny-pinching, obviously).

Whatever happens, there's still quality in this team. I'm intending to wait until the action starts (and the transfer window closes) and, if there's no enjoyment to be had, then I'll start panicking.

If Nasri goes we'll spend big on his replacement, same with Cesc. I am now convinced that this will happen because if it doesn't then the Club is utterly broken from top to bottom.

I really hope that if we do sell Nasri we sign Mata, then we sign a centre back (cahill is my preference) and a ball winning midfielder. Then even if we sold Cesc I wouldn't mind about replacing him as I would be happy enough with the competition in the middle but like most thing

@JDubYes - I think the problem is that while Wenger is standing still and giving 2nd and 3rd chances, other teams are improving and signing better players which is going to increase the gap between us and them.

If the gap gets too big, then that's when the downward spiral will begin.

I don't think we'll win this year, but we have to remain in the CL.

This is the big worry. All the while we were spanking Sheffield United and whoever else in the League Cup with kids it looked pretty funny and we could stomach not winning anything cos the future looked so rosy. Now look at United, kids coming out of their arse whether they've made them or bought them and, with the exception of Wilshere, they all look better than our equivalents. Plus they spend money on very good, proven players. I bet they get Schneider to supplement Smalling, Jones, Cleverley, Welbeck, Macheda, the da Silvas and so on.

Chin up everyone. There is still hope...

From Arseblog:

So, what of defenders? At last night’s AISA meeting Ivan Gazidis was asked why we we’re not after ‘a couple of centre-halves’. His response, “How do you know we not?” He went on to say:

Arsene recognises we need to have additions and addition or additions in our defence. He recognises there has been an issue there. And he will take steps to do that.

I have not had an evening off – and I’m leaving here to do some more work – we are working extremely hard on this but it’s not a supermarket where you go in and pick good players off the shelf. That’s not the way it works. I’m sorry but it’s much much more complex than that.

Man United look to have a very stable set-up. They have really good young players coming through plus they can sign the cream of the crop. It's how they have always stayed at the top, by always investing in their squad whenever it's required & developing decent home grown talent. We are getting so far behind them that's it's becoming infuriating. We never sign top class footballers and when I say top class, I mean the very best of the best who only go to clubs like Barcelona, Man United, Real Madrid & to a lesser extent the two Milan clubs.

Even if Wenger does spend the cash in the next 3 weeks, he's never going to get us the players we need to be challenging for trophies. I can't get excited over the new toddler from Southampton, nor the likes of Cahill or Jagielka. Samba could be a useful buy but I don't hold out much hope because he will be expensive.

As for what we can realistically achieve this season, I think we can forget the league & champions league. It's naive and stupid to think we can be realistically challenging for them. The best we can hope for is a 3rd or 4th place finish with the outside chance of a domestic cup, but Wenger treats those competitions with contempt so there's not much chance of winning either if I'm being honest.

Judging by the supporters reaction last season and during pre-season games, I think the fans are going to give the team a very hard time this year which won't really help matters.

Also, over 2000 people didn't renew their season tickets. This totally shatters previous records.

Oh fuck, some good news! Miyaichi got his work permit! Genuinely hope he gets some games, rather than five minutes here and there while he wastes away like Vela.

Upon hearing the news, Arsène Wenger said: “We are absolutely delighted that Ryo has been granted a work permit. This is almost like a new signing for us."

I haven't even made that bit up. Sorry.

Which top class footballers have moved to United in the past couple of years? Sure, we've bought young and got stars (Chicharito being one, Ronaldo the other but they weren't known much before). The last major signing was Berbatov. Barca, Madrid, Chelsea, City.. they're the ones taking the top of the top if they can.

This is almost like a new signing for us, as we weren’t completely sure we would be given the authorisation. Ryo has worked extremely hard in pre-season and performed very well during the matches in Asia, Germany and Portugal.

Now where have I heard this before?

Miyaichi does look like to type to actually try, so it is good news. Dann is much the same as any other defender really, I still think I'd like Samba most of all, but a Prem defender of reasonably proven ability can only be good news. Hopefully Squillaci will go, for the sake of the wage bill if nothing else. Him being an even worse CB than Gus Caesar being another good reason.

The BBC understands a fee of £30m, plus over £5m of additional performance-related payments is close to being reached.

It is understood that, if he is sold, Fabregas will be due £4m in compensation - £1m for every year of his contract he did not complete - but may have given up the payment in order to facilitate a deal.

Pretty shit!

Would have been reasonably happy with £35mill + over £5 mill in add ons, but 30 + over 5 is not quite enough.

'£5m of additional performance-related payments' would be all settled within about three months if the past five years of his form, impact and value are any kind of yardstick. Fuck em, £40m or laters. And £40m is cheap.

Bollocks, where's our new fucking owner? He should be telling them to do one and get himself some support from the fans.
