I think it largely depends on whether Barton's genuinely cleaned up his act or not, because if he hasn't then you probably wouldn't want him hanging around London with your kids like Wilshere.

But yeah, you wouldn't expect us to sit and happily concede four goal leads when there are players like Barton in the team.

Are people seriously suggesting we actually buy Joey fucking Barton? I know we're desperate for some signings but having that knobhead about is just a recipe for disaster. We've allegedly got this world class scouting network and the best they could come up with to fill a vital role is a bloke who has essentially been sacked for being daft again. If Wenger actually had any interest in getting him on board I think it could be construed as the last act of a desperate man.

Agreed, technically he's a poor footballer with a sociopathic streak a mile wide. His success largely seems rely on intimidation and what referees in England will let him get away with. Barton wouldn't make any La Liga side as a) he's shit and b) he'd be sent of within half an hour of every match. If he actually turned up at Arsenal I'd assume Wenger had actually taken leave of his senses and I'd call it a day - start watching kabaddi or mongolian wrestling or somesuch.

If Arsenal sign Barton then I want to know what this imposter has done with the real Wenger or, if this is the real Wenger, he has gone completely loopy and given up on whatever it was he has been trying to achieve for the last Godknowshowmany years.

But they do play a technically precise game, like most decent teams in Spain. My point was it's only the way in which the game is officiated in England that allows players like Barton to flourish - take away his ability to kick players up in the air for ninety minutes and I'm not sure what he'd do with himself.

The point is that along with people's eagerness for us to again be a viable candidate to win the league is a willingness to greatly reduce the standard of player that we want to see in an Arsenal shirt. There exists in Barton a very nasty streak - not a level of granite like resolve that someone like Petit or Vieira or Keown had, but an immaturity that makes him kick people on the pitch and blind young footballers who give him grief. He's not the sort of person who is likely to dispense a great team talk or a few pearls of wisdom to any young player as his leadership style is more likely to be firing everyone up by pumping some poor sod into the hoardings.

It reminds me of every summer when England get bummed out of a major tournament and we have 30 seconds of introspection then decide what we actually needed instead of better passing ability and the awareness to change tactics dependant on opposition is to "play our natural game" and "get in their faces more". Roughly translated as run about at 100mph and randomly kick old Fritz about because that's not how they like it. It's base level crap and Arsenal are above it.

Barton is a very good footballer. He's just a bit of a knob with a horrible past. I can't believe I am saying this, but if he concentrated on just playing football and didn't get into bother off the pitch, he'd be a decent signing for us.

On paper, Barton in London is a recipe for disaster. But it could work.

He took pens at the toon though didn't he so that flatters him a bit.

Oh and definitely, definitely fuck Barton. He would tear our fragile dressing room apart. He is a very, very capable footballer though - when he was a Man City youngster everyone thought he was going to be a world beater didn't they. It's just he is massive cunt.

I'm not saying that in the Champion's League Final the first name on the team sheet should be Barton, but he is technically capable and was fantastic for large chunks of last season. You can't have watched him much if you think all he does is kick people, it's blatantly not true - there aren't many people in the Premiership better at striking the ball than him. See:

I'm not going to deny that the first bits happen and he's obviously a risk - and Art is right that off the pitch he doesn't deserve to wear an Arsenal shirt. But that doesn't mean he isn't a very capable footballer and whilst he doesn't suit La Liga, he'd definitely get into Serie A teams - he's not that different to De Rossi, really.

Also, Wilshere on Zigic last season.

He can hit a ball but his passing is pisspoor and getting worse - I watched him quite a bit last season, especially closely after he made those comments that he was Englands best midfielder - he played Villa next and put in one of the most hopeless displays of football I can remember watching. Alternately committing pointless fouls to gift Villa their goal, constantly screaming at the ref and repeatedly giving the ball away - I wouldn't have said that was an unusually bad display from him either. He looked a talent as a youngster, I agree but it's a damning indictment of English football that precocious talent can develop into such an angry and technically inept player as Barton.

I don't know, you're probably right. He doesn't really deserve empassioned defence, that's for sure. It's just so annoying losing against teams that do nothing but kick and occasional corners.

Twitter talk that Barca have made a "final" offer of €42m, €37m plus five in bonuses etc for Cesc. So about £37m. Would be tempted to accept that. Use the money for Mata and a centreback, use Nasri in the middle (or sell if City really want to pay £22m) and buy someone else.

Barton's an alright footballer but never an Arsenal player and even less an AW signing.

He's pretty much a David Hillier but a massive cunt to go with it.

Never gonna happen.

£37 million for Cesc is very tempting. If the add ons take it over £40 mill then we might as well take it.

More from ANR (sorry)

Oh I agree entirely - but the issue lies with the way English football is officiated, not with Arsenal. I know it's tricky to say that and not come off like a whinging Wenger sycophant but the explicit threat of violent challenges is used far too widely in this country and has been allowed to flourish by referees and to an extent by many fans and pundits in the wider game who seem unable to distinguish between a 'good honest challenge' and a 'mindless career threatening challenge'. Not only does it fundamentally undermine the development of genuine English talent (Barton being a reasonable example) which in turn means that England have next to no chance of ever wining an international trophy. it also allows the most awful fucking football to thrive - Stoke City for instance.

Mediawatch on Barton:

He stubbed a cigar out in someone's eye. His eye. He started a fight in a friendly match against Doncaster in 2004. He attacked a 15-year-old Everton fan (admittedly under some provocation) on another pre-season tour. He made Ousmane Dabo look like this, then earlier this year called Dabo a 'pussy' over the incident. And, of course, spent a couple of months inside for battering seven shades of something unpleasant out of a man near a McDonalds in Liverpool.

So our traditional derisory opening bid looks to have been rejected. Definitely looks like one/both of Nasri and Cesc are leaving.

My understanding is that the deal has been agreed but it won't be announced until Arsenal sign replacements. I guess other clubs may raise their prices when they know we have an extra £36m or whatever.

My mate's neighbour's cousin's postman's girlfriend's dad saw Mata at the Emirates earlier on today, apparently.

Wait, it's not transfer deadline day is it? Never mind. Probably nothing.

It was probably just a Spanish tourist.
