We're weak, flat track bullies. We need three mean and nasty players who absolutely will not settle for second best and will fight to the death. And then for that to rub off on the rest.

It's a fair point of course, but who do you think fits that bill who we might actually be able to buy? I've seen talk of Ballack coming in on a free but that seems extremely fanciful to me.

Wenger tends to avoid the established names so it doesn't really matter who we think fits the bill as it'll probably be a comparative unknown. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Vermaelen wouldn't have been at the top of everyone's list but he's been superb. Eduardo (pre-Birmingham) was shaping up to be wonderful and few had him on their 'want!' list either. The only thing we all want is the right player, not particularly a big name.

One of the other threads suggests Carrick might be leaving United.

You would be welcome to him but his not really that kind of player. He doesn't stamp his authority on games, his passing is terrible under pressure and he's not someone who really tries to get the ball back when he loses it. The last one especially seems to be your biggest problem as a team (although I only watch you on MOTD when you lose or draw so I might be wrong)

:eyebrows:

You'll be seeing a lot more of my team (WBA) than I will next season then - I only watch it when we win or get a draw when I expected a defeat if that holds true for us as well.

It is a shame that Ballack will want a 2+ year deal on eight trillion pounds a week and would have to be utterly mental to sign for us rather than a new deal at Chelsea, because he'd be ace on a Bosman.

edit @ tomato - don't think you might do ok if you can hang onto Dorrans?

Dorrans is an excellent player, by our standard, but if he has a good first half of the season, I think he might be pinched by one of the clubs pushing for a top half finish in the transfer window. Of course, it depends very much who RdM buys in the summer, but there's no doubt we need an awful lot of strengthening, and especially a forward who can finish - we haven't had one of those very often in the last few years - Phillips in the last promotion season was a rarity.

If Ballack is available on a free, I think Man City might snap him up.

God knows. I hadn't heard of Denilson before he bought him, or Diaby. Get in two signings like that but with some bollocks on them. He's got scouts all over the world, he can make it happen.

Not sure if its been mentioned but was I right when I heard the Mirror hack on Arseblog saying that there will be changes in the medical staff next season? I guess you could read into that that the clubs injuries are not average across the rest of the league.

I don't play FM, so is Romelu Lukaku also awesome? He looks a bit of a Rooney-esque freak of nature.

As an aside, Belgium are gonna have a good team in a few years:

Kompany

Vermaelen

Vertonghen

Martens

Fellaini

Witsel

Defour

Hazard

Lukaku

All are between 16 and 24 years old. :(

I have no idea about that Capoue fella, I can't say I've ever noticed him the few times I've seen Toulouse play. But I have seen a fair amount of Lukaku, and he's pretty damn good already. He's massive, athletic, pacey and decent enough on the ball. This is the generation of players Wenger was hyping up a long time ago. Defour, Hazard and Lukaku will almost certainly all get moves to big European clubs within the next couple of years. Defour's been ready for a while, IMO, and Hazard is probably no more than a year away. Lukaku won't be moving for a bit because his Dad wants him to finish school first. Real Madrid, AC Milan and Chelsea have all shown interest in him already.

Lukaku will end up at Chelsea in a couple of years as Drogba's successor, I reckon. Can't believe he's only 16, he's a fucking brute.

Hazard apparently only wants to leave for either us or Real Madrid. I can't see him shifting enough shirts for Perez's liking, and they'll probably sign Ribery or Di Maria this summer anyway in his position. So maybe Wenger can dust off his wallet next summer and pick us up a superstar in the making, who knows.

I think Fergie has been looking at Defour for a while. Maybe if Carrick leaves he'll go for him this summer?

Vertonghen would be a good player for us I think -- plays CB for Ajax and DM for Belgium so could offer good cover in either position.

It does seem the most likely outcome at the moment and they have been the most attentive of the interested clubs, but a lot can happen between now and when he finishes his education. Plus, we all know how quickly situations can change in football. The complete nosedive Liverpool have taken between this time last year and now is proof of that. :(

He's going to cost a lot but I reckon he'll likely be worth it. He's brilliant, so much more polished than most of these players that are touted as 'the next big thing'.

We've been linked with him for about 3 years and more recently, he's been linked with the Mancs, Everton, Man City, and I believe they've started mentioning you lot as well.

Is Defour even back from injury yet though? I think Carrick will go but not much point bringing in another injured midfielder.

From the broken foot? Yeah, he's been back for ages.

A google suggests he is, but I've never actually noticed him. If we want an FM2010 striker though - Yannis Tafer all the way. Amazing.

And he's French.

And he's already done this for the national team:

2007–2008 France U17 11 (6)

2008–2009 France U18 8 (7)

2009– France U19 11 (5)

:(

Kinda convinced myself now, actually.

We want to improve our quality this summer. It is not necessarily a large number of players that we need to buy but I believe you don't win the title when you concede 40 goals. Leave the transfer business to me and when you come back in July for the Emirates Cup you will see.

The first (empty?) promise of the summer?

I don't think he's stupid enough to state that so explicitly if he's not genuinely planning on strengthening in defensive areas. I'm normally very cynical, but that quote clearly implies that he's looking to do more than just replace Gallas.

edit: still don't reckon he'll buy a keeper though :/
