It's pretty amazing how little we do shoot. Rosicky and Lord Persie seem the only guys to have a shot from afar, but Rosicky usually always shags the ball a mile wide. Everyone else only want to have a go if it's a millimetre out.

I probably said this in 2006.

Rosicky is like that kid in Mighty Ducks who hits an unstoppable strike one in every three with the others firing off comically into windows and people holding drink cups, only he does it once every few hundred.

My life will literally not be worth scratching through if we finish below Spurs.

It really would be inexcusable - not competing more for the league & Champion's League is something that has to be viewed from a fair & realistic perspective but to let that happen... fuck.

The knuckle puck? At the conclusion of that film don't they secretly stick him in goal so he can later score the game winning goal? Just a thought.

So the Guardian had 'Arsenal to bid for Joe Hart' as its main story on the football page yesterday. Presumably that must mean that there's possibly a bit more substance to this than the average transfer rumour? Oh dear God I hope so.

Even their own story said it was unlikely we would get him. :(

It doesn't mean much, really. It's a long way from certain they'll accept any bids as it kinda said...unless they get Buffon. But even then it might be Given that goes, rather than Hart.

It just seems a bit odd that they'd run with it as their main story rather just sticking in the Rumour Mill or whatever.

Oh who am I kidding. :(

Don't get me wrong. I want to believe, it would be a fantastic signing. I just don't think we have a chance of getting him.

Is Szeschezechezcheny really all that? If he's as AMAZE as people say, it would seem a bit odd to sign a 24-year-old GK at this point, especially given Wenger's previous "I don't want to kill them" comments about other young players. Perhaps a slightly older keeper like Frey or Yohann Pele might be more Wenger-ish, I dunno.

If Roger Chesney does turn out to be the Superman everyone's predicting, I reckon we could do worse than get David James in for a year or two. He'd be free, is experienced and his articulate Guardianista leanings would fit in well with the Stoke Newington lesbian knitting set of Nasri, Sagna and Rosicky.

Him doing well with little pressure against lower division strikers isn't the most reliable test - but he is doing well. Hart being English might be a consideration though, if rules changes are suspected down the line.

Bearing in mind we still haven't secured fourth, what are we all taking away from the season?

Recent form aside, I think its been a pretty good one. Once again Arsene has secured CL football (albeit maybe through a qualifier should the worst happen) and at times we have played some good football.

The thing I have noticed this season is that the league has been tougher. You have 8 or 9 teams in the top half who are improving year on year (although Fulham seemed to have sacrificed league position for cup glory) and while you could argue that the top 3 have moved backwards looking at the games they have lost, for me its tougher. I think that in the current climate, the most important thing is that we are in the CL again.

The cup competitions have been more disappointing. The FA Cup springs to mind. We rested players for the Stoke game for what was admittedly a difficult fixture pile-up, but then only took 4 points from the following 4 league games.

None of this takes away from the obvious problems we have had though. I think more than a personnel problem, its been one of application. The players who have played recently have just not had the required desire. Arsene stated that since going out of the PL race, something has been missing. That's not really good enough though, especially for the travelling fans to Blackburn. We also have had something to fight for, 3rd place. I don't believe that highly payed professionals should have had the attitude they have had recently, and I think Arsene feels the same. Complaining about the treatment of Fabianski seems a bit of a smoke screen reading between the lines.

Next season is pivotol for Arsene. I can't see the fans taking another trophyless year but would winning the FA Cup and not finishing in the top 4 be seen as progress? I guess the answer is that we should be doing both.

The transfers will determine how ambitious the manager is for trophies next season. Sticking with the goalkeepers we have is a risk and would show a lack of ambition. As would continuing with Sylvestre as CB cover. I know a lot of people have no time for the likes of Diaby and Denilson, but I think they are good squad players and looking at the rest of the midfield options, I can't see much happening here. If Chamakh comes in then we should be set up front.

I think a top Goalkeeper and CB (two if Gallas leaves) along with Chamakh would set things up nicely. I would like to see someone come into the midfield as well so that Denilson and Diaby don't have to play too many games together but I can't see Arsene making more than 2-3 transfers. Vela and Merida to go maybe regardless? Maybe Eduardo to kick-start his career?

So, what are your thoughts for the season?

The FA Cup should be classed as more important. The League Cup should either be classed as more important, or used only for young 'uns.

Going out to Barcelona was acceptable, just.

Fourth isn't good enough.

Juve got relegated and Buffon stayed on so it's hardly a given. A shay given, even.

*gets coat*

ololololol

A more serious answer - Juve are looking to spend a ton of money in the summer so yes, whilst they've had a bad year this time around its not much worse than AC's a couple of seasons back or Roma's last season. Its not a massive issue as the top of the table is a more fluid area there, its a sign that changes need to be made so that the club can return to suceess in the future. Bear in mind that they've also got f-all debt to service too, so a year out of the CL isn't going to financially ruin them.

p.s. You've secured 4th, just not 3rd yet. Whichever way it swings you'll at least get a chance to play in the CL proper next season, both of us can't catch you.

It's not about being English though is it. Loads of our non-English players are still 'home grown' so I don't think we're majorly affected by that rule right now and we shouldn't necessarily need to base signings around.

If there was a rule-change, I don't think the current "homegrown" status would be enough. Dual nationality almost certainly would be, mind - and I'm sure quite a lot of our kids have/could have that.

As I've stated, I think we need another defensive midfielder. Even more so than a new keeper, IMO. A new CB is a given if Gallas leaves, and possibly even if he doesn't. Vela and Eduardo should go out on loan. If one of them stays though, Wilshere should probably resume his loan at Bolton. I think Merida is off to Atletico, and Senderos/Silvestre also seem certain to leave on Bosmans.

As for this season, for me it's been very frustrating because the weaknesses were glaringly obvious before the campaign began. Everyone could see we were lacking bite in midfield after we got priced out on Felipe Melo. Everyone could see we were lacking cover at CB after Djourou got killed. Everyone could see that relying on Robin 'Glassman' Van Persie to lead the line was folly when there was no proven backup.

I'd like to think that last summer the money simply wasn't there to strengthen, and it wasn't just a case of Wenger's ego preventing him from signing some backup in certain positions. I don't think people will put up with the same old story again this summer though, and if he doesn't spend a bit of money to make us a bit more solid and give us more depth in defensive areas, well he'll be taking a massive risk. If we have money he chooses not to spend, and we end up in the same boat next year, then Wenger can fuck off as far as I'm concerned.

I hope to God it doesn't come to that though. Don't let us down, Arsene!

AFAIK though a change which enforced a certain number of English players is unworkable under EU law. And I can't see UKIP winning the election so I think we're ok on that front.

Blatter mentioned the treaty of rome in an interview in the standard where he explained why he was taking the opposite view to platini vis-a-vis the 6+5 rule.

[edit]

which is bizarre because I found this from two years ago
