Anyway, I was thinking of my wish list for the summer. One that might actually be achievable and players who would fit in. I'd quite fancy Chamakh on a free, Hangeland and Milner plus a keeper. Any keeper.

I'd be quite happy if we were signing Chamakh to be a goalkeeper.

:)

I think I would probably accept Chamakh (that seems nailed on) a goalkeeper of course and depending who stays one or maybe even two centrebacks. If Gallas, Sol and Silvestrelol all leave then that leaves is TV and Djourou. Hardly adequate cover.

Yeah, as I was saying after Barca, this summer is about keeping the squad together as much as anything. It is entirely possible we're going to lose 3 CB's, as you say. That's a big worry.

Milner would be quite nice but realistically ain't gonna happen. He'd be £15m and unless Cesc leaves for big bucks (which I still don't think will happen this summer), I can't see us having that sort of money to spend on an ostensibly attacking midfielder when there are more pressing problems.

I've seen Marcos Senna mentioned as cover for Song, and I think that would be a stop gap good deal if we can get him cheap. One of Barcelona's defensive midfielders might look to move in the summer (probably Toure, as he seems to have fallen behind not only Busquets but also Keita in the pecking order). He'd be expensive though and I'm not sure Wenger would want a big name player in his prime, given Song's rapid progress. If Toure leaves Barca it'll be in search of regular first team football, and I don't think it'd be smart to promise that to him. It'd "kill" Song! Ditto Felipe Melo if he looks to move after his miserable season at Juve.

Hangeland is decent but if Gallas leaves then we'd probably still need one more CB. Mexes maybe? He only has a year left on his contract by the looks of it. Vermaelen, Hangeland, Mexes and Djourou is a good bunch to pick from.

By the sounds of it Chamakh is definitely coming on a free so that's good. We definitely don't need any more money spent in attack unless there are departures.

As for a keeper, it's a tough one but plenty of names were bandied about recently in this thread. I do think we'll go for someone though. Don't forget though that Man Utd will also probably be in the hunt for a goalie, since Foster looks like he might not be up to it.

Yeah, Chamakh looks like it's a done deal.

How about Lyons keeper or CSKA's? Can't think of any other top keepers who could be available.

CB's? Aren't there any playing in England that could be good?

Much as I don't want to recommend a team sign Wednesday's best player...Mark Beevers would be a good shout. It's only a matter of time before he turns up in the Premiership, so it might as well be for Arsenal.

Hangeland and Gary Cahill are the English-based centre-backs that Arsenal will probably look at. Beyond that, Mexes and Jerome Boateng are being mentioned a lot.

In goal you've got Akinfeev (CSKA) or Neuer (Schalke) as the main names that keep cropping up along with Lloris (Lyon). None of them are likely to be cheap, especially Lloris with Aulas' reputation for getting absolute top dollar for Lyon's players. Akinfeev has six months left on his contract and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go to Man Utd in January.

Other names that seem to be cropping up are Eden Hazard, and a multitude of defensive midfielders that I discussed in my last post. Names put forward for the exit door are Silvestre, Senderos, Traore, Merida, Vela and Eduardo, along with possibly Campbell and Gallas. Earlier this year I would have sadly gone along with the Eduardo rumour (not because I think he's finished, but just because I don't think he fits into 4-3-3 very well), but he recently signed a new deal so God only knows what Wenger's plans are for him.

It'll be interesting to see what happens this summer -- a lot of people seem to think that we'll have quite a bit to spend, so who will be proved right, them or Steve "there's no money" 007?

I am not going to kid myself and dream we will buy loads of players and blow £100m and then spend the whole summer waiting only for it not to happen.

I think the keeper situation will be the main one to be addressed this summer. Hopefully Wenger has the man in mind and will wrap the deal up early in the summer, as he did last year with Vermaelen. It doesn't have to be the a crazy amount of money. Looking around the Premier League Reina cost £6m and Cech cost £7m so it can be done within our budget. Lloris is going to cost a fortune and Lyon always get full value for their players as you say so that one is out. The other two you mention are possibilities but knowing Wenger it will be someone we have never heard of.

The centre back situation is a little more tricky. Assuming both Sol and Silvestre leave that leaves us with three. As he hasn't signed yet I think Gallas will also leave. So that just leaves two and means we need at least two more. Hangeland would be good but as Fulham sold Smalling I guess they won't be too keen to him too.

As usual the key will be holding on to the players we have, one in particular... :)

If we haven't sold Vela, then he's like a new signing!

Put him in net.

He missed the Barcelona game. After losing his passport. Not a joke apparently.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...g-passport.html

Vela's agent Eduardo Hernandez defended the 21-year-old, saying: 'Carlos did not find his passport. He didn't mislead the club, he just didn't know where the document was.'

Has he been on benches recently then?

I'll admit, I've not paid much attention to the league games recently, I can't cope with a race for the title and a relegation battle at the same time.

Yes he came off the bench again Wolves.

Well, I'm not sure anyone is suggesting we'll spend £100m, but £30-40m doesn't seem crazy if we have to replace two defenders and a goalkeeper. I think Gallas and Campbell might yet stay for one more season, in which case we only need one CB and a goalkeeper. Wenger has gone on record as saying he will have money to spend this summer and intends to do so.

I think I've read/heard in a number of places that the $30/40 that the board is always saying Arsene has to spend includes wages. So if Cesc signs a new contract, that's $20 million and Chamakh would probably be another $10. Wouldn't be surprised if we sign Chamakh and another defender in the same price range as Vermaelen. Would love to see us sign a couple more players obviously.

At current exchange rates that sounds about right.

I'm not convinced we'll spend much at all in the summer. The highest outgoing will probably be a signing on fee for Chamakh and his wages. Wenger is notorious for saying he intends to buy, generally after losing a big game, and then when he has had time to think about it he will say that he will spend if the right player comes along (which nine times out of ten it invariably doesn't).

I think a CB may be the only purchase, assuming Gallas leaves. Will he spend big on Hangeland though?

I think with regards to goalkeepers we are in a difficult situation. We have a lot of them, and for Arsene to buy another one he is as good as telling the others that that's it. Its just not his style. I wouldn't be suprised to see Almunia still number one next season.

He is under a lot of pressure next season though, maybe the most since he has been at the club. After the furor at the AGM last year I seem to remember him implying that his grand plan was coming to fruition and that he should be judged in two seasons time. This is one season gone.
