So Song is out for the Barcelona game. I'm gone from thinking we had a slight chance to thinking it's going to take a miracle.

Although the game last week was very entertaining, I kind of wish we had gone out to Porto in the last round, which would have allowed us to concentrate on the league.

With a back line of Vermaelen and either Sol or Silvestre and a midfield in front of it without Song I think we will be able to concentrate on the league very soon.

Is that for sure now? I am willing to hold back rational thinking till the very last moment if there is even the faintest glimmer of hope.

Arsène Wenger had a "bad surprise" on Monday morning - Alex Song has been ruled out of the Champions League trip to Barcelona.

The Cameroon midfielder was substituted with 19 minutes remaining against Wolves on Saturday with a groin problem but his manager expected him to be OK for the Quarter-Final second leg at the Nou Camp. But Song's injury is worse than first feared.

"It was a bad surprise this morning because he had a scan yesterday afternoon on his knee and he has an inflamed cartilage," said Wenger before leaving for Spain. "We have to wait and see how bad it is but he is completely out for the squad for tomorrow's game."

Sol Campbell was Arsenal's other doubt ahead of the second leg. The 35-year-old completed 90 minutes against Wolves but fatigue was always going to be a factor with two high-intensity games in just three days. Wenger will wait until matchday before deciding whether to pick Campbell.

"That is a decision I have to make after speaking to him tomorrow," said the manager. "Today he was still not completely available although he managed to get a warm-up. To go into such a game you must be completely fit or not play at all."

Arsenal squad to face Barcelona:

Manuel Almunia

Lukasz Fabianski

Nicklas Bendtner

Eduardo

Abou Diaby

Samir Nasri

Denilson

Fran Merida

Theo Walcott

Craig Eastmond

Tomas Rosicky

Armand Traore

Emmanuel Eboue

Gael Clichy

Bacary Sagna

Thomas Vermaelen

Sol Campbell

Mikael Silvestre

It's has the potential to be like the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan.

I've got a sneaking feeling you'll win.

As much as I would love us to win I think we'll get battered. Barcelona are at home with a point and as much I hate them for constantly tapping up our players and having an insufferable superiority complex, they are one of the best teams I've ever seen. They'll probably going to be spoken of in similar terms to to Ajax of the 70's and Milan of the late 80's in years to come.

Less so if we win.

Which we will. Because we have Bendtner.

I can't see us turning them over tonight, I'm afraid. We'll need massive, massive, game dominating performances from players like Walcott and Nasri and for Barca to be off colour. Even then we can't afford to drop our level for one second. There'll be no hiding place tonight.

If Nasri turns up then it's entirely possible.

I think he's had his best games in the middle, where he surely must start tonight. And I think the extra responsibility will up his game too. But we still need a top level from every single player and with our injury list, the likes of Campbell who this game won't suit, plus them being at home and a bit awesome and all that.. it doesn't look good.

Totally, I'm not expecting Arsenal to win from this at all really, but Nasri... :) he is so fucking good when he's on the ball (lol), and if he glitters tonight then he can turn one 'perhaps' moment into a game changer. I like barca and think they deserve success from their playing style, but I would dearly love to see them untied and taken apart tonight.

Diaby was rubbish last time, but Denilson did his fair share of slowing down Barcelona.

Yes, I agree. I think Diaby will have to be the wild card and we rely on Denilson having a solid, disciplined game. More often than not he does that, actually, regardless of whether you love him as an individual player. The fact is that he's all we've got tonight :) . Merida is on the bench apparently.

I think I'd start with Nasri and Denilson middle and deep, Walcott and Rosicky (if fit) wide, Bender up top and Diaby in the hole ish. Beyond that there's Eboue but I think he'll start Walcott cos there'll be no point bringing Theo on if we go two or three down. Then you're looking at bonkers stuff like Traore on the left or the out of form Eduardo. Merida can play wide but I think this is beyond him and I'd be shocked to see Eastmond before 20mins and our first injury.

Horrible news. Ah well, it's only football! Just wish I could watch this one at home rather than head into town where inevitably I'll have to deal with drunk & lairy Barca supporters. Also quit smoking this time last week - gonna be tough to get through this..
