Arsenal

Yeah, he's very good and would cost a lot. I'd say there are a few you should be looking at in Europe that won't cost as much but are definitely good enough for Arsenal, and a massive improvement over Almunia:

Neuer

Asenjo

Adler

De Gea

The problem is, unless you're willing to shell out a big fee on a world class 'keeper, you're going to have to buy potential.

On (obv.) Football Manager, Asenjo is a genius. On the same basis, Ustari too.

You're not suggesting he's any good are you? I actually think he's one of the worse keepers in the League right now and a serious weak point in the team.

Are we allowed to count Fabianski? He's not the worst if so...

If we're not, I think he is *the* worst.

And yet I can't recall seeing Nii Lamptey, Cherno Samba, or Freddy Adu setting the entire world on fire :)

Adu wasn't limited to FM, everyone said he'd be good.

But Atletico and Getafe keepers are hardly obscure - I just don't really watch La Liga.

Asenjo had some problems this season which resulted in De Gea getting a chance, and subsequently becoming first choice. Asenjo is definitely good enough to bounce back, though, and I'd expect a few big clubs will be considering moves for him in the summer.

Diego Lopez (Villareal) has always impressed me, too. The talent is out there, you'll just have to spend a bit to secure it.

See this is where things start to go wrong.

Well, yeah, but's it's not like you've got no money. Money has been spent in areas where Wenger felt it was justified, it's just a shame for you guys that he hasn't properly addressed the 'keeper situation. £10m or less would sort you out. We got Reina for £6m, Van Der Sar was a free transfer, Cech was what, £10M? Obviously there is an art in getting the right guy, at the right time, for the right price, but the problem has become so apparent now that it will surely be addressed this summer.

We were so spoilt.

We really were. It's hard to notice at the time but in that time/era there were some of Arsenal's greatest ever players all in the same side.

Look at this (and I know these things are massively in favour of recent players as many more people remember them) but out of our top 10 players ever 6 played in the same team (excluding Ian Wright who never played with Henry or Pires).

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Clearly the like of Henry, Berkamp, Pires, Seaman and so forth are, or were, great players. That they were at the club during a period of success unprecedented in recent times. Thing to remember, though, in absolute terms - ie when playing the best in Europe, Arsenal regularly got knocked out by anything approaching decent continental opposition. Certainly they couldn't match the success in Europe of this side in the last five years. Perhaps the quality of opposition in Europe has dropped off a little, certainly the quality in the Premiership has risen sharply in that time. Not sure what point I'm trying to make here - would the likes of Fabregas, Van Persie, Arshavin, Nasri and perhaps even Clichy walk into that late nineties /early 00's Arsenal team? Difficult one to answer, perhaps.

That's quite an odd list. Kanu is really, really high.

Entirely irrelevant anyway, as Bendtner isn't at the top of it. Obviously he will be next time the list is compiled, so they might as well just put him there now.

Walk in? Maybe Fab.. maybe. Clichy is never gettin' in over Winterburn! :)

As an aside, people always seem to fail to realise that Fabregas' quick development was because of the crop of players he was an understudy to. When he first came into the senior squad, he was training with all of those quality players. If Bendtner, for instance, had been around the same age and around that squad at the same time I'm sure we would have seen a much more rapid development from promising talent to match winner. Aaaanyways, I hope you guys beat Barca.

I think the English teams have had an additional decade to re-acclimatise to European football after the Heisel ban, which helps. I also think mainland European clubs have declined, compared to a decade ago. Spanish clubs are pretty poor at the moment, Real and Barcelona aside; Italian clubs are a lot worse; German clubs are worse.

So yeah, I think Arsenal's team today is definitely inferior to the sides of the late 90s and early 00s, irrespective of its comparative success in Europe.

Gallas back in the squad for tomorrow. Could be massive for the run in unless he goes lame again.

Yeah that's great news. I just really hope Cesc plays tomorrow. Gotta be worth a little risk and rest him on the weekend if we must, even though from now on every game is a cup final.

AW rates Cesc as only a 40% chance of playing tomorrow. Not sure if I totally believe that though.

Yeah, and PSG apparently. I do wonder if the 'injury' that's been keeping him out has been 'resolved' one way or another now.

Fingers crossed The Injury is clear for the run-in, but having him for Barce is better than nothing.

You'd be tempted to risk him against Barca given that Campbell is more suited to the Prem anyway. I'd love to think we'd have three fit CBs for the rest of the campaign though.
