Anyone think that apart from the backpass hoo-hah, Sol had a cracking game?

Yeah, I thought he did well all things considered. I don't like the bloke, and he's let us down in the past, but he's drinking at the last chance saloon and knows it. He's putting the effort in at the very least. I bet he could have smacked our keeper over that back pass. Sol probably should have hoofed it but the keeper just stood like a dumbfounded lump.

Surely it's Wenger's fault for not coaching defence?

He doesn't coach anyone. If you're good enough naturally he'll let you reach the top. If you've got flaws he won't coach them out of you. I think this is why Diaby still frustrates, Clichy's gone backwards and so on. In a way I think he's let them down, they need an iron fist sometimes. I've always said this.

I thought Diaby was woeful last night. In the last 20 minutes I lost count of the amount of sloppy passes he made to lose possesion. And his refusal to put his foot through the ball was enfuriating! Instead of which he just decided to take 2-3 dummies and then pass it off to someone else. Booooo...

I'd play Traore, if only to put a rocket up Clichy's arse. Anyone remember those photos of Clichy wankered in a nightclub? I think that coincided with him turning shit. He's lost his pace and wingers are skinning him for fun. Sagna has gone backwards too.

Clichy lost his hunger & desire as soon as he was capped by France. He's never been the same player since. It's like he's thought he's made it and doesn't have to work anymore.

Sagna suffers because he has no protection from the right sided midfielders in front of him.

There's no money or so little that his only hope is to try and build from the ground up for virtually free, then his discretion and restraint in not moaning or using it as an excuse or leaving, and the miracle of getting this lot into the CL knock out stages every year and being almost title challengers is quite incredible.

I think this is what's happening. Plus add to that the fact that the recession has royally screwed up the amount of money they thought would be coming in from the new stadium and he's competing with clubs who have unlimited spending power like Chelsea/Man City.

I think another problem is the money coming in from the old stadium. There are loads of flats unsold and the ones that have been sold are having to be reduced in price. Perhaps they were hoping for a big windfall which hasn't materialised.

This is key, IMO.

Remember when we had partnerships all over the pitch? Vieira Petit, Cole Overmars/Pires, Lauren Parlour/Freddie, the centrebacks (pick any two), Thierry and Dennis, Dennis and Anelka and so on and so forth. Everyone knew where they stood, when to press, when to cover, when to stay at home. Now we've got a front six more or less playing in a perpetually rotating circular formation. At any given time these six players could be anywhere. Plus the fullbacks bombing on, Vermaelen pushing forward. It reads like a recipe for disaster and it is. Chelsea and ManYoo must wish they could play us every week. It would be groundhog day. I can't even blame workrate anymore, it's simply a headless chicken formation. When it's good we can beat average sides, when teams have even partially got us sussed we're fucked.

I'd advocate 4-4-2 for the rest of the season. Pair up down the flanks, when one goes forward the other covers. Deep midfield player, ie Song, with Fabregas given a free run. An actual strike force of two cos we haven't got an effective target man at the Club. All our strikers are utterly wasted playing alone. For example, if Bendtner wins a flick on, who's he looking for? Does he flick it left or right? Players anticipate runs and adapt to that.

Barca would surely just move Iniesta onto the left to accomodate him. I'm not sure they're worried as they obviously want him and won't exactly be scared of having too much talent in the squad.

Exactly. He plays on (or rather from) the left half the time anyway. Fabregas would be guaranteed a place in Barca's starting XI on match day one. The rest would be up to him, but I don't think anyone can seriously question his ability to force his way into any side.

The Football365 quote does raise a good point, actually. You don't often see quick free kicks taken after the ref has himself handled the ball, if ever.

I saw it again on Sky, it's well cheeky. I don't blame Porto, they took their chance. The ref was like 'give me the ball'..'there you go Porto'. Goal. If the Porto player had picked up a loose ball, placed it and etc. then you accept it but the referee literally handed them the goal. I think fans from any Club would feel aggrieved.

Yep.

Indeed. Is it a little sad that I look forward to seeing him play for Barca with all those quality players?

...and a great manager who drills the importance of grunt work into his players, and puts them out onto the pitch with a winning mentality. They are tough, work hard for each other, and defend and attack as a unit. They're great to watch with the ball or without it. The difference between you and Barca is more than just the quality of their players; they are basically streets ahead of everyone where that's concerned, but what makes them brilliant is the superb application of those talents without forgetting the bread and butter of the game.

----------Almunia

----Sagna----Vermaelen--Cambell-----Clichy

--Arshavin----Fabregas---Song----Rosicky

------------Bendtner-------Walcott

It's got to be worth a go.

(Please note accurate notation of Almunia not being stood in front of the net. I go for accuracy in my formations.)

Maybe. Still unsure Ibrahimovic fits in that team, scored on the weekend for the first time in two months and he looks a bit out of place at Barca whenever I seen him play. Pedro has replaced Henry well this season. Iniesta out wide isn't a problem as he plays there for Spain, but even though he plays better than most wingers on the left, it is rescricting him for me to dictate the match. It all really depends on the Barca president elections if Fabregas is to move.

I would switch Walcott and Arshavin. Arshavin plays best for Russia when he's behind a target man. And is a bigger goal threat than Walcott. When is Eduardo due back? At the moment a world class keeper and striker are separating you from Chelsea and Man Utd. Van Persie just doesn't play enough to be considered world class even though he has the talent. But if you sell Fabregas in the summer than your back to square one and have to wait for Ramsey to develop.

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Abou Diaby sustained knee ligament damage against Porto on Wednesday.

The French midfielder picked up the knock during Arsenal's disappointing 2-1 defeat at Estadio do Dragao.

The Gunners are yet to determine the full severity of the problem, but accept that the 23-year-old could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

That's a full season between them.

A full season :) .

That's.. A NEW SIGNING!

I can see it now! Come August when we've flogged Fabregas and fans storm the training complex in anger, Wenger comes out and attempts to calm everyone down by telling them not to worry as we have a replacement, Diaby! "He will be like a new signing!":wub::(

Sorry to drag this a bit OT, Gooners, but I had to reply to this. I can't believe you've posted this, Shevchenko. He has been outstanding for them. He recently went through a dry patch as you pointed out, however, he has consistently played well in that time. He allows the forwards and midfield to make their runs into pockets of space by holding it up well and has also shown a great eye for a pass. His movement off the ball is great and his presence alone leaves the likes of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta loads of space to play in. I don't think it is coincidence that they have dominated since signing him. They look a far better side with him playing, compared to when they had Eto'o leading the line. He's got 12 in 19 in the league and at least half a dozen assists. He's been brilliant for them, the goals are almost just a bonus.

In an attempt to post something related to Arsenal I'll just say that I think Fabregas will likely slot into the 3 in midfield, with Iniesta moving wide. Iniesta spends a lot of time out there already anyway.
