It's a bit bit of a grey area, generally those sorts of things are given as penalties - unfairly I'd say. What you see a lot of currently (and it's by no means just Gerrard, Eduardo did it against Celtic earlier in the season, Rooney then did it against us at OT) is attackers pushing the ball hard beyond a challenge so that no defensive contact can be made, then launching themselves at the defender to try claim a penalty. It's relatively easy to spot as the ball is well beyond their control when they collide with their opposite number, IMO if you don't try and play the ball meaningfully then it shouldn't be foul, you're simply looking to create a situation that will result in a penalty. It's just another form of diving.

The comparison of the situation with the Rooney penalty is a good one I think, they are very similar, however you are being a bit unfair in the description. Neither Rooney nor Gerrard launched themselves at the defender/GK, they carried on in the same direction they were travelling in and the defender/GK came in to make a tackle to a ball that no longer exists (because it has been booted away) and so fouls the player. This is pretty different to the Pires method of pushing the ball past a defender then actually launching himself into the defender (I havent seen the Eduardo one). I agree though that it is a bit of a grey area. If no player is able to reach the ball when the foul is committed then is it a foul?

I thought the whole game was very similar to the Man U v Arsenal game (with that Rooney penalty), except Arsenal played opposite roles! You outplayed Man U at OT, gifted them a goal and collapsed and then we did pretty much the same against you.

Well, the response should be in that situation that the defender then doesn't go in. If he is already committed it is probable it was going to by a foul regardless of where the ball is...

In booting the ball away the attacker is conceding he can make no sensible use of the ball and is looking for a foul. In both those cases the attacker was going down long before any impact was made, as to what extent it was them launching themselves at an opponent is I suspect a matter of interpretation. You're right, Pires did a similar thing too.

First half you were the better team, no question - even then we still had a lot of possession but didn't know what to do with it. Second half I thought we outplayed you.

According to the FIFA rules:

A penalty kick is awarded if any of the above ten offences is committed by a player inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball, provided it is in play.

It's worth reading the rules. Many of the 'grey areas' pundits refer to are clearly described.

Let's be honest fellow Gooners, that was a stone-wall penalty in the first half, no? Gerrard's rep helped (or not) him out quite spectacularly there.

Yeah, definite pen. I think someone needs to sit Stevey G down and tell him the story about the little boy who cried wolf.

I agree, I don't think it was a pen.

I've been a bit annoyed that the discussion around the pen has been as simple as 'stonewall, but he didn't get it because of the Blackburn dive', rather than looking at the fact that $tevie MBE is already falling before he touches Gallas.

Still, as I said, we won anyways.

We did indeed.

Gotta follow that with nothing less than 6 points from the Burnley and Hull games.

Without a doubt. Anything less will simply not be good enough.

I want some fucking consistency over the coming weeks.
