Wenger needs to have a word with Vela. Vela treated tonight like it was a training match. No excuse for his finishing tonight and doesn't really help him stake a claim for a first team spot in van Persie's absence. Although as our squad is so small and weak he'll start anyway *sigh*

Walcott still has no end product to anything, ever. He has to up his game for the weekend and start earning his money because he rarely ever puts in a good shift.

Arsenal will get CSKA Moscow. :(

I'd prefer the easiest draw possible but we are to small & weak to win the CL. However, we tend to do better when drawn against the likes of Real Madrid or Milan rather than "easy" teams so I am not fussed who we get.

Unless we play an English team. Then we're fucked. Not next round though is it?

Yep. But my ultimate nightmare is for Chelsea to win it. We've always been the team in London, but can you imagine what it will be like to hear them singing "have you ever won the European Cup?" like Villa and Liverpool do? I'd top myself. The most depressing thing is that while we get weaker and weaker and go backwards all the time, they have built themselves a great squad that really ought to be capable of winning everything. That fucking stings.

He's shit.

He's shit.

Some pundit or other said the other day that without his pace he wouldn't even be a pro. I thought it was well harsh at the time. But when you think about it.. How many times has he come off the pitch and you've thought he'd had a good game? Twice? He needs to want it more.

Ramsey continues to be the shining light but he's not ready for a full season. Song must the most improved player on the entire planet.

It was a no lose situation for Wenger. Kids play shit, doesn't matter. Kids play well, look at how great Wenger is at spotting talent.

In the end I thought they did pretty well. Walcott was probably the worst player on the park. Fabianski actually came for crosses. Bartley looks promising, until Wenger Senderoses him.

Vela's like a mexican Kuyt. Didn't think Wilshere looked that special.

Song looked in a diffent class to the rest. DR is right - most improved player on the planet. How the hell did that happen?

I think his time on loan at Charlton did him a world of good. Not immediately but I think it played a big role in his insane improvement.

That's why I think we should go on and loan out Wilshere for a bit.

And I thought Fabianski played fucking great. For such a young keeper he shows a lot of promise. It'll be a while before that's realised though. He's nowhere near a ready made replacement for Almunia. Not yet anyway.

The game on Sunday should be interesting. I hope we can keep the momentum going from the Stoke win.

Vela's depressing. After those Carling Cup games I fell in love with him. He's done toss all since.

Oh, Vela!

He's like Walcott. And most of the rest of the team probably.

"You can have it all but how much do you want it?"

This is why I like Denilson. Aside from being a decent young player he never, ever hides and he looks like he wants to make the most of things. Half of them are either shit scared or couldn't give a toss. Losing is more or less acceptable at the Arsenal. I think Senderos is the only one who's been properly dropped after suffering from bad form and ironically he's another one who actually looks determined to make it.

Yeah, he's almost nowhere near as good as Flamini, rather than infinitely worse. A big improvement.

Ramsey was great yesterday as well. Always wanted it, always involved.

I was a little less impressed with Merida. Didn't realise he was still on at one point in the second half.

He's a totally different type of player to Flamini.

I dont understand how we have so many "promising" young players who seem to stagnate and not improve? We obvioulsy cant produce decent centre backs under Wenger. All of the best defenders we have had were there before Wenger (Adams., Keown etc) are were bought experienced players (Campbell, Gallas etc)

Players like Walcott & Vela do not seem have to moved on an inch. Walcott is nice and fast and his finishing is sometimes great but often woeful. You cant rely on speed alone. It seems like apart from Fabregas, Wenger is only able to shape players with experience into world class players, Henry, Pires, Ljunberg and Vieira are examples of this. I think the youth policy is flawed in so many ways.

I am really worried that someone with as much potential as Wilshere is going to be wasted. I think that a loan is a great move and agree it helped Song considerably

You can't just "make" centre backs. I can think of, say, 3 under 23 defenders in the league in the last few years that would deserve a starting spot here. But I can think of lots of 28 y/o and above.

Give it a decade and our kids will be good centre backs, but that is quite a while.

Yeah, I'm running out of patience with Walcott & Vela.

I want them both to be good, try and convince myself that they will be good, but how many good games has either had really?

You'll struggle to come up with even 5 I bet.

Not just flashes (Walcott's run against the scousers or Vela in the CC) an actual good performance.

If that is true why is Senderos the forgotten man? He started out great then steadily declined. I think the real trouble is that Wenger doesnt know how to teach defence. If he did we would concede to so many st pieces. The one year our defence actually made a marked improvement, and when we reached the champions league final, was the one season that Keown was coaching the defenders. This doesnt ever get mentioned. And the next season he wasnt used. Why not? Because Wenger A) wants the glory himself B) isnt bothered with defence. His philosophy is if you score a goal we will score two. This is great when you are scoring goals, but we haven't been, and defeats with Man City, Chelsea and Sunderland highlight this.

This "fantastic" youth system we've got is overrated.

Yes, we have a few good players, maybe 2 or 3 will do a job in the first team squad eventually but lets face it, the rest will end up at places like Barnet, Carlisle, Plymouth & QPR. Most of them are never going to get a run in the first team because whilst they are good, they are not at a standard to compete with the best of Chelsea & Man United.

While I was having a pessimistic summer I said something like that. The trouble is that most of the players in the top 4 starting 11s haven't got there by hard-work and good coaching. They've done it through natural talent - I mean Torres playing at Stocksbridge Park Steels for his whole career would still be a fantastic player . The coaching makes him even better. Essentially, he's a fluke. Same goes for Fabregas, Arshavin, Drogba, etc.

But lower down the league, where hardwork can make up for a bit of a lack in natural talent our youth system has been amazing. Birmingham's best players are our rejects.

So I don't know if it'll ever work.

I've got an awful amount of respect for Wenger in the way he seem intent on winning trophies with honest hard work and values over spunking cash on players. These values are really out of place in modern day football, however sad that may be. A bunch of kids playing attractive football cannot beat the best. It's as if he's been watching too many 80s kid's movies where the colourful group of rag tag outsiders defeat Camp Snooty in the annual boat race with a mix of courage and various high jinks and all learn a valuable lesson in the process.
