Something Of A Despicable Goon

Mediawatch has always been of the opinion that The Daily Mirror's betting man Derek McGovern is...how to put this nicely...something of a despicable goon.

We were therefore cheered to read the following in his column this morning:

'Wenger...does have a habit of unearthing young players who look fantastic for four rounds of the Carling Cup before never being heard of again.

'Bischoff, Rui Fonte, Coquelin, Frimpong - to you and I the specials of the day in a pretentious London restaurant; to Arsenal fans part of the Gunners squad that beat Wigan 3-0 in the fourth round last year.

'All seem to have disappeared without trace, though to be honest I've never heard of anyone disappearing with trace (she's ain't exactly a looker).'

Let's gloss over the 'jokes' for a second, and take a look at the team that played in that 3-0 win a year ago.

Indeed the players mentioned were named in Arsenal's squad, but Coquelin and Frimpong didn't make it off the bench, while Bischoff and Rui Fonte appeared for 14 and six minutes respectively.

Also included in this collection of obscure children were Alex Song (first-team regular), Kieron Gibbs (England U21 regular, 26 first-team appearances), Jack Wilshere (thought to be the finest natural talent of his generation, first-team squad regular), Aaron Ramsey (Wales international, first-team squad regular), Jay Simpson (Scoring goals for fun on loan at QPR in the Championship), Carlos Vela (Mexico international, on the fringes of the first team) and Johan Djourou (77 first-team appearances, 24 Swiss caps).

Other than that, it was a very well thought-out and researched piece.

Bell. End.

Yeah he really is.

Was gonna come in here and say PLEEEEASE CAN WE KEEP JAY SIMPSON!!??? It pissed me off that we didn't sign a proven goal scorer, as that's all I wanted, but luckily bringing Jay in on loan has papered over that little crack. The Kid is pure class.

I thought Eastmond looked great tonight. Bags of energy and the boy likes a tackle.

Ramsey's range of passing is exceptional. He's going to be proper tidy.

I was very impressed with Eastmond as well. Composed, good on the tackle, some nice long passes. He looks very bright.

Ramsey was solid as always and Nasri was fantastic. Cant wait to see him back in the premiership

Could and should have been more, but I do love watching Arsenal at their best. I definitely think you'll finish above Liverpool this season, and could be in with your best title shout in a while. Lovely goal by Fabregas, too - don't think it was quite as much of a gift as Sky suggested.

Statattack:

Arsenal are now 20 league games unbeaten against Spurs.

Arsenal have now gone a full decade without losing to Spurs in the league (last Spurs win was in November 1999)

Arsene Wenger has never lost a home game to Spurs.

Arsene Wenger has now won 1000 points for Arsenal. To put that into perspective, only Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal have more than 1000 points in the division. The next highest point scorers are Aston Villa on 956.

Tottenham's last win away at Arsenal was in the first Premier League season, 1992/93.
