My chin *is* up.

I just feel like I'm being a troll for saying we're quite good. Which is ridiculous.

It's not that we aren't good, it's that we aren't good enough. And we used to be, and with a couple more players, probably could be. It's just frustrating. Especially when you see us dominate Man U at Old Trafford and lose, and then go on to struggle to beat Liege.

Still, we've got no difficult games until Chelsea at the end of October. We should rack up a hell of a lot of points in that time.

I'll stop moaning until we lose to Fulham again, or something. :(

So basically, basically, are they one of the best players in their position in the world?

Yeah, that's a reasonable definition of average.

I phrased that poorly. Clearly it's not a definition of average, but I think they're the criteria he was using when he talked about 'average' players.

Seems as if the crowd are voting with their feet - tickets will soon be available for general sale for the Olympiakos and Blackburn games - not sure this has happened before (it has for Carling and FA cups of course).

Chin up as they say.

At least Wigan try to play decent football under Martinez these days.

What is your definition of average?
Well a sensible definition in this instance is probably 'Would they get as much first team action at United or Chelsea? If not, they're possibly not good enough'.

What Fox said is my definition of average.

Average for Arsenal is not the same as say average for Everton (no disrespect to Everton). By that I mean we should have a higher standard than Everton if we are serious about winning the EPL or CL. Everton are not seriously aiming to win the league but we should be, that's why Tim Howard, Saha and Phil Neville are good enough for them but weren't for UTD. All pretty good players but while not good enough for Utd maybe good enough for Everton.

For about 18 months Jens Lehmann was the best keeper on the planet. Not only were his performances of an exceptionally high standard, but he demanded the same quality from the players in front of him. Almunia just isn't in the same league, but is he poor enough to replace? Probably not I guess. Which is an issue from front to back - there's only a few players out there that are outright shit enough to try and replace. To compare this mob to the Invincibles - a team that went unbeaten all ruddy season - is farcical.

Our most frustrating quality is that we can totally crush a team on Saturday then turn up midweek and play like a pack of bennies. One minute Diaby is Messi then the next time he gets the ball he runs into trouble and makes you start wondering if Eddie McGoldrick bought his boots with him and fancies a half. We've had to make do with mediocrity and now that's all we can expect on a regular basis. There's just no way I can see this lot competing on all fronts all season, as we didn't really last season and we have pretty much the same squad.

But they've done that since the first year we played in the Mickey Mouse Cup at The Grove.

yeah, what I mean is they're upfront about it, and price the tickets accordingly.

I was thinking about the lower leagues system in germany where the big clubs turn out one or two teams of b-players, or youngsters.

is nice, yes?

I went for a jog this morning and when I came in I must have been high of my ass on exercise induced endorphines but I only went and put Rosicky into my fantasy football team.

He'll probably be replaced by RVP, as he's fit, today. Floops!

Anyway, I'm excited about the match today. Really would love a nice big win to cheer us up (if just for a short while). Also, it's on Setanta, free to air here in Ireland, so I'll get to watch the whole thing.

That could be a good thing, it could be a bad thing. Let's hope it's not the latter.

I think that's a very dubious claim.

LOL. How many other teams have a gone a season, or 49 games unbeaten in recent years?

It was a privilege to watch that team.

Wigan haven't really been at the races so far this season. Should be a comfortable three points.

Much as I hate them, I think United's Treble was a far greater achievement. I don't think that makes them the best team England has ever seen either, but I think it gives them a better claim than Arsenal's unbeaten in the league season.

Ok. I'll bite. You are clearly wrong. What is the greatest team English football has seen?

SET PIECE GOAL!

My man crush on Vermaelen grows deeper.

We now have two defenders that can score from set pieces! I can't remember the last time we had that! (I can, but it was too long ago)

I can only go on what I've seen, I suppose and I didn't follow football before 1990. I would probably say the United 99 team (grits teeth) are the best I've seen. Second were the Arsenal 91 team, of whom I saw a lot but my memory is not a little hazy.

I don't want to disrupt this team-specific thread any more, so if you want to continue this, how about just quoting my post and answering it in the general football thread?

I think some of the bigger clubs have looked into it before but they would inevitably have to start waaaaaaay down the league probably playing against worse opposition than in the reserves.

To be fair, the quality of our academy's current output would make that a sweet enough deal. It'd be great to give them something real to compete against, I think. They could play at the Alty FC ground, yeaaaah. Setup costs would be minimal, hell it would probably pay for itself, in ticket revenues and the transfers of the players it would essentially advertise.
