Another positive to take is that apart from his own goal, Diaby was impressive. Several times he was taking it round players and getting into the box, they struggled to deal with him. If you'd said this time last year that we'd be playing Eboue, Song, Denilson, and Diaby against Man Utd you'd have been worried, but they looked good enough for moost of the game.

It was a real shame. There's always the feeling that our confidence can be erased after a result like today's that will lead to a few tepid performances and dropped points. That will be the real test this season.

I still think that there's room for improvement - Denilson's covering was excellent, but his distribution was occasionally poor. Also, as much as I like Eboue being around to fill in, despite his ability to find space and get in good positions, you never feel like he's ever going to do much when he's there. I'll be much happier when we get Walcott or Rosicky back in the mix. Today confirmed what we know already - we are really good, but can self destruct at any minute.

Song, Diaby and Gallas really stood out today. If Song can improve his range a bit and add another yard of pace he'll be top drawer. I'd be much happier if we got a couple of bodies in for cover though.

And Arsenal fans wouldn't have done the same if he'd been playing for United at the Emirates?

Heck, Arseanl fans boo their own players sometimes. :o

Seriously though, it was pretty annoying hearing the boos, its uncalled for, but its part of the game, I doubt all of them are stupid cunts. :)

Sweet jesus it's been a long, messy weekend and it wasn't made any nicer by that loss.

We didn't deserve to lose the game at all. Man Utd's first shot on target was the pen which tells you something.

While we have to take the positives from the game, so do the players. I want to see us fucking hop the fuck off Man City come the 12th.

Now to nurse this hangover with some rum and beer...

Thought Arsenal played really well, United looked lost and we basically gifted them two freak goals out of character. The team looked solid though, especially defensively. If Almunia hadn't gifted them the equaliser it didn't look like United were going anywhere.

Really?

Almunia is an accident waiting to happen that's happened. Diaby's mistake might have been avoided had he and almunia communicated in some way.

Can you imagine Chelsea making those errors?

I cannot believe AW actually didn't buy anyone, he actually did it.

As he tried to buy Melo a couple of months ago he obviously realises we need a DCM so why he hasn't gone in for anyone else is quite incredible, even for him it's quite incredible.

I hope it sets a precedent however, and that the world of football collapses on its collective arse when 4500 players receive two match bans for "simulation". It's all the game's got to look forward to now. The worst he would have received in the game had the referee gone on instinct: a yellow. Now, he gets a two match ban. Congratulations for completely missing the fucking point UEFA.

Our first choice 11 isn't too bad, but with injuries, suspensions & fatigue throughout the course of the season, I am absolutely amazed no one else was signed. We all knew he was unlikely to sign anyone but it is still comes as a massive kick in the teeth that we lack the ambition of other clubs by choosing not to strengthen the squad.

I really don't understand it. The board keeps saying there is some money available should Wenger choose to spend it, but year after year the squad becomes more depleted. You simply can't put a price on experience and not to sign anyone senior and established is a fucking crime. Gallas is going to be very important this year due to his experience.

So with the squad we have, the absolute best we can really hope for is about 3rd which just isn't good enough. I don't know about other supporters, but I'm not satisfied by just about reaching Champions League positions each year. I want to be challenging for trophies. Looks like the club doesn't share the same ambition...

Wenger quite clearly doesn't like spending money unless he knows the player will make an impact like Arshavin has. This kind of policy will obviously drive us mad.

I'm with all of you that it's quite shit we didn't sign anybody when we really quite obviously need extra cover. Cover, that's all. Not a shit hot proven talent. That's what really pisses me off more then anything. The policy shouldn't apply.

What I will say is a player of Arshavin's quality and instant impact is so amazingly hard to find. Near impossible.

We really can't be thinking if Wenger blew a load on someone that we'd see the same results. However, at least we'd have some FUCKING COVER!

Thinking about it, I think I'm happy with cover we have at the back. Senderos is still with us. Yeah, he ain't world class but as cover he's fine. So is Djourourourou.

Holding Midfield is where we'll end up shitting ourselves soon enough. Really all we have is Denilson and Song. Both have performed really well this season but Song's has the ACN and we all saw what happen last season when Denilson got overplayed.

Now, it's now the end of the world, far from it. We just have to pray we get very lucky when it comes to injuries. At least we seem to be getting them out of the way at the start if the season.

Just to defend big scruffy Al, he did give Diaby a shout according to Diaby himself...

"The goalkeeper called out to me to leave the ball, but it's all my fault."

From an articule in the sun.

Who would you have got in as holding midfield cover, out of interest? Bearing in mind it would have to be someone a) pretty good; B) happy to play second fiddle a lot of the time to Song/Denilson; c) who wanted to leave their current club; and probably d) cheap, since it seems Wenger will never pay over the odds for anyone, least of all a 'squad player'.

I can't think of anyone who'd fit, really. Not sure Melo was ever really gonna happen because I don't think Wenger wanted to pay the asking price, and he also probably wanted backup for Song, not a replacement. Poulsen refused to leave Juve even when they told him to GTFO, so I doubt he would have come. Is Cana really all that? Again, would he have wanted assurances about first team football? Probably.

Maybe if we're still in with a shout come the new year, Wenger will try and get some cover for Song in the January window. I would also have thought that against certain teams at home where we can afford to sacrifice some solidity for more attacking strength, he'll be less likely to play Song and Denilson together once Nasri and Rosicky (lol) are back. That would give them a bit more rest.

Who I'd pick? God only knows. Like you say, it's a hard fit. Very hard fit.

I'm not too worried. Like I said, I don't think we're in THAT bad a shape, squad wise. It's just with our history of injuries and the ACN our squad can sometimes take quite a battering, not so much with ACN now certain heads have left. That's what kinda scares me.

If we get lucky with injuries, though, we'll be fine...

I don't think we're in that bad shape at all, but we're gonna have to rely on Song and Denilson to perform week in week out and I'm not sure if they're up to / ready to do that.

We're also gonna have to hope we get lucky with not getting injuries to key players like Gallas, Vermalean, Song, Cesc, Arshavin, RVP to name a few.

I'm not too confident on either points.

No, but I think he could have become "most of that" if not "all that" with time spent at Arsenal. It was a perfect fit - he needs to learn a bit of discipline, a bit more actual football, and we needed someone who would give us some more bite, something to inspire confidence while everyone else was bombing forward flicking the ball between each other, something for Song and Denilson to be a bit inspired by. Wouldn't have been Arshavin-esque instant impact though, I'm sure.

Convince him of that and I think he wouldn't have needed lots of starts, just some and lots of bench time in his first season.

We're pretty thin at the back still. I'm sure Senderos would have gone too had we found anyone to take him, so I'm not really sure where he fits in. At any point if we get one injury and a suspension we have literally no cover at centre back. We've still got the exact same team as last season, minus our longest serving player and our top scorer. Don't mean to sound down, but all we've done is spank 3 terrible teams and lose to Man Utd. Nothing convinces me we're any better.
