Hasn't Wenger said that if 'his way' doesn't work this season then he'll spend big next summer.

I agree with what you've said there though. Kolo strengthens City's team more than Ade did as we were so weak in defence. It's looking like it might be tough to get Lescott as who would be next in line and who would they replace him with? Finding a left sided centre-back who can cover left-back aswell (where we need cover for Bridge) isn't an easy ask.

If Wenger is tweaking things and he plans to spend the money (like I've previously said, on Hangeland, Huntelar & a DCM, someone like Veloso maybe.... I think) then what is happening is good. He could make up the shortfall by selling Senderos, Silvestre or Eboue, or all three of them. I would personally keep Eboue as cover.

If however he's selling these players to balance the books or because he feels that what we have left is good enough to challenge then he's lost the plot and this season could well be worse than last season. Getting to two semi finals or not, last season was shit, easily Wengers worst so far.

I hope he's tweaking things and will spend the dosh, even though Wenger spending £50million in the next few weeks does seem a little unlikely.

While I'm still pissed from the day's drinking, I really think Arshavin is going to be beyond awesome this season. The two goals he scored today were something crazy good and when you take into account it was just a friendly...

...Shit

I really enjoyed my day at the emirates yesterday. The view was incredible.

The football took until the second half of Arsenal v Atletico to actually get good but that was worth it. Jack wilshere looks to be an amazing player, he was incredible.

It must be a nightmare getting home from that ground when its completely sold out though. We left straight away, and the queues for the tube were enormous. Though it did go down quickly, and i'm not from london so dont know if thats good for a tube service.

Great day out overall, looking forward to watching the rest today on the tele ;)

I didn't really mind losing Toure, but Senderos does leave a bit of a hole. He wasn't great, but he could have covered injuries. From the rumours, I'd guess standing Song as a defender and replacing him in midfield with Viera is the logic.

I'm really not sure about Viera. For a start it must be the conclusion of Le Experiment - surely it is an acknowledgment that we shouldn't have let him go, which then means we're back frowning at Henry and Pires leaving since they went for basically the same reason.

Bit depressing, really.

I don't see why it's an admission that he shouldn't have gone. He was visibly on the wane when he left for Italy and he's patently no longer the player he was in his pomp. The thing is, Wenger must see that the team could really use a bit of bite in midfield, but at the same time he's probably reluctant to buy someone in their mid-late twenties for fear of stinting the development of Song and/or Denilson in that role. He's invested a lot of time and effort in bringing those players through, so to put an obstical in their way for the next five seasons would be pretty illogical.

Vieira on the other hand, is never going to be around for longer than a season or two. He's also not going to be physically up to playing in every game so there will still be plenty of opportunities for the young players to push on. But he can do a job in certain games where his experience and presence would be particularly helpful, without significantly hindering the development of the young midfielders. So from that point of view, as long as he's fit then it actually seems like a very sensible signing.

As for Henry and Pires: like Vieira, Henry clearly wanted to go abroad for a new challenge, so that's kinda moot. No sense keeping a player who looks like he's declining and would rather be somewhere else. Pires flourished at Villareal in a free role, but he'd never get the time and space to play that way in England. So again, I think he left at a good time. If there's one thing Wenger is good at, it's knowing when it's time for a player to leave.

Henry is slightly different as he blatantly went to avoid living near his ex-wife. Pires was stupid to let go though, he clearly had more left to offer.

But I disagree with everything about Viera. Either he was always good enough to stay at Arsenal and the policy of bringing through youths to replace seniors has failed, or he isn't good enough to come back and shouldn't. Bringing him back just because he is going to retire soon is batshit. Why not sign someone on a 3 year contract and sell them after 2 if we only need that long? Plus if Song and Denilson don't get any better, we're not in a panic trying to find someone two years from now.

It's either a failure or stupid. Neither of which are good.

In other news, various places are saying we're buying Kalou. If he wasn't African I'd be inclined to believe it - he seems quite well suited really, especially in terms of potential - he hasn't done as well at Chelsea as he might have - and I'd quite like to see him join.

But I am far from convinced.

His Wiki page says this though:

"According to Soccernet, Kalou revealed that he idolizes French forward and Arsenal record goalscorer Thierry Henry, of Barcelona, and tries to imitate Henry's moves in his free time. His admiration of Henry was a factor in his decision to play in the Premier League, as it was the league where Henry became a superstar."

So if we need a straight-replacement thinks-he-is-Henry-and-disappears-in-to-stupidly-timed-tournaments he's perfect.
