To be fair though Arsenal should get through that stage without too much trouble, and if they don't they were never going to get very far in the Champions League anyway.

One of these days we will get knocked out in the early stage. We've gone from automatic entry into just about scraping 4th place and preliminary rounds. As we are in decline (which we are) it doesn't take a genius to work out that a fired up team could dump us out.

Liverpool werent far from being knocked out of the Champions Leauge during qualification last year. It took a goal in the last minute of extra time to put us through.

I know nothing of him,but he sounds like a polar bear from the His Dark Materials books.

Pretty much all you need to

.

Looks like a bit of Flamini mixed up with a bit of Graeme Souness and maybe a bit of Roy Keane thrown in for good measure.

You guys realise that there's been more talk about us signing him in the last month than you right?

By more I of course mean that there's actually been a rumour in the papers!

edit: Cana I mean

Yea but we're all gonna buy him on Football Manager so it must be true.

The tricky thing about measuring Arsenals success in the Premiership is you have to factor in how much more competitive the Premiership is now then when Wenger took over. Competition in Europe is, perhaps, a fairer way to gauge the strength of a team. Draw your own conclusions:

1996/7 : DNQ for Champions League, beaten in the UEFA Cup First Round - Borussia Mönchengladbach

1997/8 : DNQ for Champions League, beaten in the UEFA Cup First Round - PAOK FC

1998/9 : Group Stage (finished behind Dynamo Kiev and Lens)

1999/0 : First Group Stage (finished behind Barca and Fiorentina)

2000/1 : Quarter Finals - Valencia

2001/2 : Second Group Stage (finished behind Leverkusen and Depor)

2002/3 : Second Group Stage (finished behind Valencia and Ajax)

2003/4 : Quarter Finals - Chelsea

2004/5 : First Knockout Round - Bayern

2005/6 : Final - Barca

2006/7 : First Knockout Round - PSV

2007/8 : Quarter Finals - Liverpool

2008/9 : Semi Finals - Man United

There were really, really big rumours last season. In all honesty I'd never heard of him before then, but I do think he would be a fantastic signing to have on the pitch against BoltonEtc. Hopefully he'd calm down a bit, but still keep plenty of bite.

I don't think we'll sign him though - I think we would have done last season if we were going to.

But we should.

Well, you could just as well switch that round and say, our relative 'success' in Europe in recent years means nothing because the Champions League is much less competitive. Apart from the other English teams and Barcelona there's hardly anyone to fear in Europe. If we were to win it next year it wouldn't mean anything like as much as it did for Utd to win it in 1999.

I think it's hard to see from our point of view but the teams to fear in Europe are now the English teams. In the last four years all four of the top four have made the final, Man Utd twice. Ten years ago we were still learning in Europe and didn't have the best players in our league. That has changed now and we are on top.

Still, that list above makes interesting reading as Arsenal's decline domestically has coincided with better form in Europe. Then again I have a theory that teams often play better if they approach European football as the underdogs. But that's a whole other story.

The only reason there aren't many teams to fear in Europe is because of how high the bar now is the Prem, there are still very good teams in Europe. You could argue that the strength of the Prem has weakened the rest of Europe but only to a fairly limited degree.

Marouane Chamakh link.

Never heard of him.

Linked by Phillipe Auclair from France Football no less who is a fucking legend. Gunnerblog Link

I also know nothing about Chamakh, I'd be surprised if this was pure conjecture on Auclair's part though, he must have heard something. Very unlikely to be from the Arsenal camp given our clandestine transfer policy, but if it was, and there is some truth in this, he certainly won't be 'hearing' anything else anytime soon.

If it does turn out to be true and it's Adebayor out/Chamakh in, attitude aside, it would surprise me if that represented an improvement in the quality of the squad. Still, Arsene knows best.

Chamakh's scoring record isn't great, but I suppose it's comparable to our other strikers.

If your opinion quoted above is true though, it's a massive improvement to the squad. Adebayor's proven that he can score goals when he gives a shit but he simply doesn't; to have a player that can score the same amount of goals who actually does give a shit might mean we get some performances out of a striker for once.

Hopefully he's aware of the offside rule, also.

Adebayor is aware of it. He just likes it when the linesman waves at him. Makes him feel all warm inside.

Nice.

It's a good thing that we're getting shit done nice and early. And in postions where we've all wanted some new blood. Let's hope this continues throughout the rest of the summer.

Melo next please.

Don't know much about him, but I'm happy.

23 and not 16, has played in Europe & is an International, was captain of Ajax, hopefully this means he's a bit orf an organiser / leader. He also seems to have grown an inch since last week. Wasn't it reported last week that he was 5'11" ?

HEIGHT / WEIGHT: 182cm (6ft) / 82kg (12st 13Ib)

Edit: Top 10 CB's under 6'

That's what I'm hoping, really hoping, he brings with him. It's what our defense has been crying out for...among other things.

Really like the looks of him. A no nonsense CB with experience of CL and also the captain of his previous club. Exactly what we needed.

A DM in a similar vein and we're pretty much sorted for next season assuming no one goes.
