A draw is probably a good result to come away with considering how shit we were and how thick Eboue is. There's a decent break until the next league game now and surely by then Eduardo and Arshavin will be ready to start games, Cesc'll be close to a return, maybe our season can start from there with a few wins for once.

The fact that we're still even remotely close to Chelsea (who we're yet to play at the Emirates) is a reasonable enough outcome. We've got to improve though, and quick.

People seem to be acting like the league finishes in a couple of weeks though. Yes, we're not going to win it (duh) but we've got 16 games to climb above whoever we need to. I think we'll have more than enough to claim 4th.

Having said that, I ws thinking yesterday, would a year in the UEFA Cup really be all that bad...?

From a footballing point of view, not that bad, we might even win something for once. From a financial point of view, dire. From a keeping/attracting good players point of view, also dire.

Indeed, there are suggestions that 3 will walk out if Arsenal fail to reach the Champions League. Pretty shameful if true, this should surely have motivated them today? On one hand a difference in the top 4 would be nice, but I'd much rather see Chelsea outside of it then Arsenal (Cealse only need to lose a couple of games and they risk it)

To be fair, I think it would happen with any of the traditional top-four.

Villa have got a very testing period coming up soon, though, so a long way to go yet.

it's 13 games, and yes the UEFA cup, Europa league or whatever it's gonna be called, would be shit.

5 points behind Chelsea and 7 behind Villa isn't gonna be easy. We can still do it but we're gonna have to turn these draws into wins.

Hopefully we'll have a fit Arshavin and get our 'new signings' Walcott, Cesc, Eduardo and even Rosicky back soon and then you never know.

It took Arsenal ages to get to grips with the Champions League. I don't want to it to sound like sour grapes, but Villa will get tonked in their first couple of seasons.

It's worth remembering that the premier league was of a lower quality back then and the continental style of football was better against the football we played here.

As evidenced by last seasons Champions League knockout stages the opposite is now true to some extent.

In any team in the world you're gonna miss those players. I mean, they're four (five with Audrey) world class stars that can open teams up at will. If they're back in time to make a difference I can see us putting together a good run.

I'm agreeing, that's how I see it.

As I said though, they're taking points off each other when the Premier League comes back, so if we can win against Sunderland we'll gain something. We could easily be back within a match of fourth.

Audrey?

Yeah, Andrei Arshavin became Andrey for some reason, it's not a huge surprise to find he's going to be Audrey from now on.

Villa have what every team fears - pace. We used to be like that at one stage.

We've got a little pace. Trouble is it's sucked out of us by Song. Ten pace - fifteen slow = -5 pace. That's how I see it ^_^ . In my industry, horticulture, there's something called the 'rule of one'. You can throw all the nutrients you like at plants but if one is missing then the rest are worthless. That's our team. Song slows it down so much that we can't ever get moving. Alex 'the move stops here' Song. He doesn't contribute going forward, and if he's caught out of position then God help us cos he's not getting back. The whole team is out of whack due to one player.

Thing is, he was as good as I've ever seen him today. And no, that's not actually a compliment.

Add Eboue to that, and Diaby for that matter, then you've got a huge part of our failings.

These 3 are barely acceptable squad palyers let alone 1st teamers.

Well, yeah. True.

Diaby I'd persevere with. I'd like to think we could do something there. Eboue and Song aren't anywhere near. I'd play Merida or Randall before them. It's hard but we're not playing at this. This is big time. We're close and those players are dragging us down. They're not Prem players by any stretch. They're an insult to the fans. They're standing in the shoes of Rocky, Vieira, Thomas, Parlour, Pires, Petit and all those lovely names we fondly remember.

I'm afraid I've run out of patience with Diaby. He's had what, 3 or 4 good games maybe in the whole time he's been with us?

We could probably get half decent money for these three idiots. I say sell them in the summer, add a few quid on top and go and buy a proper DCM and a proper CB or two. Probably a keeper too even though Almunia played very well today and made a couple of excellent saves.

(this is all after we've qualified for the CL of course)

There's very little money for transfers this summer and the club have budgeted for CL football so if we fail to make the top 4 (which is almost certain) then there will be next to no funds this summer.

If we qualify for the CL, and I think we will, then some money must be made available for transfers.

Like I said, that can come from selling a few players and then adding to it.

I did that BBC predictor thing and we finished 3rd, ahead of Chelsea and then Villa. I tried not to be too biased.

Utd pissed the league of course. West Brom, Boro and Stoke go down.

Try it, you might suprise yourself.

Arshavin will not make his debut against Cardiff.

The new chief exec was interviewed on Football Focus on Saturday, he said their business plan does not rely on getting into the Champions League. Cant imagine it not hurting us a lot though in some ways.

Yeah, financially they will never have basd spending on CL qualification, you only have to look at Leeds to see what can happen if it goes wrong! As SeanR says though it will put off some players, although I doubt Wenger will be going for those 'some' players anyway. I think he should have bough Palacios instead of Arshavin but maybe he's going to wait and see if he can get Flamini back.
