Arsenal

That's not really the same as what he's been saying previously though. It's a much more frank assessment - there's money in the club, but not to spend. It's what we've all suspected for a couple of years but that's not what he has said before. Wenger has money to spend if he needs it, blah, blah. It was always bullshit and now he's come out and as good as said it. Finally.

Finally.

We're skint, Amen.

The Emirates was a really great decision. Fucking horrible to get away from meaning seats are empty with ten minutes to go, a name noone can identify with, a new breed of burger munching fans, no fortress, no history and a cash burden.

I mean, in cold stark reality, what was the point? In some respects it's completely obvious but honestly, we might have been better off at Highbury  .

Highbury was a shambles by the time it shut though. I'd imagine they ceased investment when the move was confirmed but we couldn't stay there forever. At the time we were looking pretty good on the pitch with plenty of decent players coming through so presumably the suspected lack of investment we'd have to go through would be offset by the youth system, which frankly looks to be a bit of a cock up in retrospect.

The Emirates' biggest flaw is the simple fact that it appears to be designed by a theme park architect rather than a stadium designer. It is a wonderful building, but match day is like a day out at Chesington World of Adventures. T-shirt cannons? Not in my life time. If you could get an atmosphere like at the big 4 games and some more genuine fans in there I'd be happy, but at the moment I've no real affection for the place.

Plus, of course, it needs to be full. And who wants to support a team who don't win? And then where does the money come from? I'm playing devil's advocate but if the team isn't improved we could be fucked.

The most concerning thing that's dawned on me recently is the lack of Arsenal men in the dressing room. In the day you'd be schooled on arrival about Spurs, United, the Arsenal way. You have to have your shirt tucked in. Captain chooses long or short sleeves. What the fans expect. The history. The all time greats to admire and aspire to. The memories of how great it was to parade around Islington with silverware. Who does that now? Henry was probably the last Arsenal fan we had on the pitch, someone who would preach our way and who had the knowledge passed on properly. There's no McClintock, George, Adams, Keown, Vieira, Henry and you can't get that back, ever. The history, the class is lost in the dressing room. There's no link. Even Highbury is out of the equation. I do wonder what it actually means to most of them. A fat pay cheque, probably.

And as for Highbury being a shambles, I 100% agree. It meant something though.

Fuck me, it's like listening to a Great Great Grandad recall stories from The Somme in here.

:P

It's true, I tell thee.

No it fucking is, actually. It's my Club, my dad's Club and etc. etc. I've been up there all my life and that's where I get my passion, however it's directed. We're the fans, you and me. We can stand the thick and thin but right now I'm wondering what's what. Nothing's transparent. Are people creaming it off and we'll be sold? Where are the readies this stadium is supposedly making us?

High five to you mate, you're right that we do need optimism but you can't deny that it's not exactly tickedy boo right now. In all honesty, it's not the end of the world but I'm still gutted about it.

Happy New Year all the same  .

But the Emirates will be your son's stadium, and your grandson's. And it will have history, and there will be more success.

Which was my point.

I've heard my Dad bang on about cramming into the Clock End with his Dad when he was so small that he couldn't see and he remembers the smell of the beer spilling about and the pushing and cheering....zzzzzzz.

It's over. Highbury is gone. It's not our home anymore. Yes, we have memories, and no we don't have any for the Grove yet, but we will.

I know we all want trophies and instant glory but it's gonna take time. I'm just as fucked off with Gallas being a prick and Bender being shit, Song being a waste of a shirt and Wenger being le Scrooge, but at the end of the day, it's our club, it's our team and you know what, if I could be there every weekend crying at another shit performance I would. I hate my family sometimes, but I still love them. You can't change them, it's in your blood. I feel the same way about Emmanuel Fucking Eboue. He's a useless prick and as much as I don't want to, I love him. He's a Gooner. He might not be Tony Adams, Kenny Sansom, Thierry Henry, David O'Leary, Eddie McGoldrick or even Glenn Helder, but he's one of us now and I won't let us get all miserable and cunty and see us slide into a depression because things aren't what they were 5 years ago.

You know what? Fuck everyone else. We're A-R-S-E-N-A-L and will be Arsenal forever.

Same here. We're losing it though, in my opinion. It's 2009 and things have moved on but I want players who want it and need it. Who, at our Club, would do that Keown thing tomorrow? That utter desire, heart, call it what you will. I might laugh cos it's a cracking photo but I don't exactly condone it. But there's a middle ground. I could name maybe one current player who it really means something to. That's shocking.

Step forward Jack Wilshere. If ever we needed a new Charlie George it's now.

EDIT: Look at Keown's arms. There's less muscle in the entire first squad nowadays.

It's been dead in here for a while so let's spring things back into life with some transfer gossip here and here.

Same story in both links but seems a wee bit more substantiated then normal.

I'm slightly more inclined to believe news on the Sky Sports site. Still believe it when it happens though ;) . This can't be it though, we need defensive players more than luxury play makers.

He isn't the defensive player we need, sure, but it'd still be nice to have a new wide player. He would add something IF we do sign him. I'd also hope that if we signed him it wouldn't be the end of Wenger's spending.

Anyway, I doubt we'll hear any more on this, or any other dealings, for a while yet.

I'd love Teves and I've said it before. I don't see it happening though, despite the out he's given recently. Who knows. Yet again though, he isn't the DMF we all know we need. Still, I wouldn't say no.

And ttk, I like Almunia too!

lol Tevez - If Man Utd cant afford 32 mil and you are moaning about 20mil ! In your dreams

You can keep him, he's not all that to be honest. United can't afford £32m any more than we can if you're talking about cash. We know you lot like to splash obscene amounts of money around, money you haven't really got, and good luck to you ;) . We might moan about £20m, rightly so. You spent that kind of money on Hargreaves. So, yeah. lol Hargreaves.

Ah you know you'd love Hargreaves in an Arsenal shirt right now. He'd be a better replacement for Flamini than anyone else there.

With his injury record, I'm surprised Wenger didn't buy him actually.

Not for £18m, no way. I remember watching him last season when Flamini was on form. Ponderous isn't the word. Flamini, lol ;) .

Didn't Hargreaves get a goal against you last season

Anyway you're right Flamini is a better player, but quite frankly anyone, Hargreaves included, would be better than your current DM cover. The problem now is that City are going to start putting the price of any available player up making it diffcult for everyone. How is that Bishoff chap? Wasn't that 8 million or so that could have been used for an experienced DM.

Teves is good, but £32 million is probably the most absurd price since Adebayor was rumoured to go for £35 million.

Not really.

Berbacunt went for that price. Robinho was around that. There aren't many better forwards in the world so the price tag could be justified.

Where has this £35mill tag come from though? It seems fairly concrete which is a massive fuck up on the part of whoever owns him given that it's probably only Man City who have the disposable cash to spend and would be willing to do so on that scale in the whole of Europe.
