Am I being churlish if I complain about the fact we will probably sign Nasri? I'm sure he's a top notch young player and all, but what I'd like is someone who's really good now. Also, he might be 'The New ZidaneTM' but he only scored 6 goals last year, which is pretty comparable to Hleb who we all agreed doesn't score anywhere near enough. You can improve someone's game in general, but I'm always dubious you can make them a goalscorer. Apart from maybe Henry, but he's the exception that proves the rule.

Anyway, let's get back to what we do best around here, speculate who's leaving. Adebayor looks pretty keen on chuffing off, which leaves us with a farcically understrength and injury-prone forward line.

I don't think Adebayor will go, but if he does and we receive the sort of money being talked about then surely that will be put back into the team and a replacement bought. I'd rather keep him though, even for £30 mill or so.

squad numbers

Not too exciting really.

It's done, but Marseilles don't want to announce his departure yet for some reason.

Arseblog agrees with you.

Yesterday the player seemed to confirm a 4 year move to Arsenal on his official website, prompting news sites and various copycats to go into overdrive. Nasri's official site then went down and later talk of the deal being done was played down by the player's agent, the horrible Jean-Pierre Bernes who said:

Discussions are continuing between the two clubs and the player. Nothing has been finalized, no element of the transfer has been finalized and everybody is still talking. It is premature to announce anything at all.

Now, from the information I've been given this is basically a big load of old bollocks. The deal is done but for whatever reason Marseille don't want it to be officially announced yet. The delay, such as it is, is not coming from Arsenal's side. Whatever Marseille's reasons are remain open to speculation so while it's frustrating for fans not to have that official confirmation there's no need to worry. It'll happen.

As for Nasri, I'd rather see an experienced CM come into the team, rather than another kid.

I got lambasted about how Nasri is the most talented player in the world (or something) when I said the same thing less eloqunetly.

But I agree totally. Imagine Wenger signing someone like Essien.

And if it's correct that we've paid £15m or more for Nasri that's an awful lot of money.

I think Nasri is an excellent signing, even for the £15 million or so. Vela and Ramsey are also excellent additions to the squad, but I agree with what you're saying, we still need a top CM and a top CB for that matter. These should be in addition to what we've already added not really instead of.

I hope Wenger does still add these two players as they are the most important positions where we need strengthening.

Gilberto wasn't up to it last year, so I can't imagine Wenger thinks he is now, a year older and all that.

As for a CB, he said we struggle from long balls into the box so he knows the problem is there.

I just hope he doesn't lose the chequebook again before he signs these two players.

I'd like Adebayor to stay too, but £30-or-so is stupid. I'd bite their balls off for that. If he does go then s replacement is guranteed, surely? I'm not sure who.

It'll be a blow if Hleb stays now that everyone seems to have cooled off him. I'd swap him for Yaya.

Gael Clichy has explained how he had no hesitation in penning a new long-term deal with Arsenal.

After another excellent season at Emirates Stadium, left-back Clichy had reportedly attracted the attentions of Serie A giants Roma and Juventus.

However, the 22-year-old France international ended the speculation surrounding his future by inking a new contract, which expires in 2012, last week.

And Clichy has revealed that he always had his heart on extending his time at Arsenal, despite the rumoured interest from abroad.

"To be honest, I saw it in the newspapers," Clichy told Football365.fr. I told my agents that I did not want to talk about anything because my goal was to stay at Arsenal. "I knew that there were two or three clubs interested in me but they did not tell me the names.

"I know that there were all the big Italian clubs but these are not things that interest me.

"In my head it was always clear: I wanted to stay at Arsenal so I did not have to look any further or to wonder who wanted me. "It happened fairly quickly, at the end of the season I told them what I wanted, they were in agreement and the coach supported me.

"I gave them a guarantee of confidence. I am super happy. I hope that we can continue like this for another few years.

"It is just an extension of two years, so it binds me to the club for four years, so if I go to the end of my contract, it will be eight years that I will be at Arsenal.

"If everything goes well, I hope I can fulfil my contract. Once again, I really think that we can do great things with this team.

"That's why I wanted to stay there in order to help my club to move forward and start winning trophies this year."

Bravo that man! At least Mr Clichy has shown a smidgen of loyalty to the club.

As for Adebayor, how come so many of you say that you'd like him to stay, but that £30m is too good to pass up? Surely if he's as good as I'm supposed to believe, we shouldnt sell for any price?

30 million is silly money but if he left who would we bring in that could instantly jump into our team? The answer is no one really, i'd hate to see the main components of our team leave as we want to challenge for the title and if by the start of the season Flamini, Hleb and Adebayor have all left i doubt we'll do that.

He's going to cost an arm and a leg now after his Euro campaign. Unless you do sell Ade for the prices being quoted in the papers, I don't see you having the cash available after Nasri's transfer.

Is it just me who thinks Arshavin would be a perfect fit with how Arsenal go about their football?

He wouldn't come at too extortionate a cost either

I agree. According to Arseblog, Wenger does as well.

The player we should have signed instead of Hleb?

But as Gabzy said his price will be through the roof now. And most of the big teams in Europe will be after him I imagine.

He can be the player to replace Hleb.

Not sure if it'll happen though as Chelsea can offer him more money, plus Abrahmovich being Russian and everything. Also he has said he prefers/likes Spain so Barca and Real could happen.

But........

Zenit coach Dick Advocaat accepts that one of his best players will be departing in the near future but is powerless and even unwilling to stop him.

"I can understand that he wants to play in Europe," Advocaat said. "I think he has some clubs in his mind, some in England and others in Spain, because they are the only two countries he would like to play in.

"If you lose one of your main players you don't like it as a coach but you have to be realistic."

"It is difficult to say which league would suit him best. We play more or less 4-3-3 and our wide players have a lot of freedom.

"I'm not sure other coaches will give him the freedom but you have to otherwise it's difficult to use him. He needs the freedom to do what he thinks is best for the team.

If it's freedom to do what you think is best he's after, then Wenger will give him that no doubt. If he wants to play in a team where the manager encourages players to play, the come to Arsenal son. You know it makes sense.

About the fee, there was talk of £10 mill or so before the Euro's, surely that's now gonna rise to about 15-20 mill.

Is that too much?

Probably not.

oh well. :)

He is tipped to leave Uefa Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg at the end of the tournament and has claimed he has received offers from clubs in England and Germany. Arshavin has also acknowledged a preference to play in Spanish football and he concedes Barcelona are his favourite club.

"I have supported Barcelona all my life," Arshavin told euro2008.com. "Barcelona are my dream.

"I never thought I would have a genuine chance to play for the club. Let's see how the situation unfolds. For now I can't say anything for sure.

So Barca it is then (probably) if Barca want.

An ideal replacement for Deco.

Like a pint, but better apparently.

Anyone seen Cesc's quotes on Arseblog this morning? Awesome stuff!

"A club like Barcelona must respect a little more the intimacy of a club that never makes 'noise' and that tries to do things well like Arsenal. In the last few weeks it's come out that Barcelona want at least 7 players from Arsenal and this is not necessary. These things cast doubts on our players and upsets them. Arsenal do things in a different way. Always in secret. This is much more normal."

I find it hard to believe that he's on 30k a week. If that's true then he should get an increase, but 120K? Someone's having a laugh. If he really wants 120k per week we should tell him to do one and take the 32million or so on offer.

I wish he would come out and say he wants to stay (Clichy style), if that is what he wants, but the longer it goes on for then maybe he will leave. Other than that it could just be his agents way of getting him a pay rise at Arsenal.

Good news everyone!

Dear God no!

Other than that it could just be his agents way of getting him a pay rise at Arsenal.

I think that is exactly what it is. He should probably be on more than £30k but £120k a week is ridiculous.

Anyway something a bit more positive. Saw it linked from Arseblog, an interview with Cesc by Guillem Balague (the Spanish bloke on Sky).

Some good stuff, especially:

Guillem: Back in England, if you believe the rumours Adebayor and Hleb will leave as Flamini did...

Cesc: I am not so sure about Hleb, you know. But it doesn’t matter what will happen, we are a strong team and we have to trust the manager in the decisions he is about to take.

Guillem: Leaders like you, in other teams, ask for more from club owners and managers during the summer.

Cesc: I am nobody to be asking them to do things. I want to be part of a competitive team, that is my only ambition

Not sure what he means there about Hleb. But the last answer is quality.

Arseblog have been on about something for a few days, and I think he is right:

Cesc for Captain?
