To be fair, I doubt Henry planned to get injured all season. I think at the time he really did want to stay at Arsenal, he just panicked later when he realised he was getting older and wanted to win trophies.

I don't doubt it matey. But we could've bought six or seven first team players for that.

If everyone stays we'd be in the title race again next year, even if we don't make any signings.

I think Flamini will stay, Hleb I'm not so sure. He would be very suited to Italy or the big 2 in Spain.

I have to disagree about being in the race next season if we don't make any signings. If we don't make any signings in the summer then next season will be pretty much like this season, lots of promise, some outstanding football, come March we'll run out of steam as the depth in the squad is just not there.

Yeah of course, it's depressing with hindsight. I'm just saying I don't think it was a calculated decision to screw us over. And at the time I think any of us would've gladly spent that kind of money on keeping him, he was (is) such an exceptional player.

Yes, I agree we probably wouldn't win anything.. but I don't think we'd be far away. This season we were in the race until a few weeks ago, and could easily still be in it if a few things had gone our way. I know its all ifs and but it shows we really weren't that far away if you consider how just one or two decisions (and the Eduardo injury) could've made the difference.

I think Flamini will stay

The German bloke on the Guardian podcast (sorry, that's where I get all my info from), seemed to think that Bayern were pretty confident about getting him, but I guess it'll all come down to who's willing to pay the most. Bayern have got the money, the will, and a strong EURGBP exachange rate in their favour.

I know it is for some players, but I just can't get my head round how money could be any factor at all. How can it make any difference when you're earning ridiculous amounts already? It's not as if staying at Arsenal would mean he'd have to look out for special offers in Lidl.

Bayern are a big club, but to leave Arsenal and the Premier league to play for Bayern in the Bundesliga is not really a step forward in my opinion.

Flamini could have a big future at Arsenal if he keeps playing like he did this season, being captain somewhere down the line wouldn't be a big suprise at all. I hope that Arsenal don't try and mug him off with a shit offer and he doesn't take the piss with ridiculous demands.

If both parties are sensible then he'll stay.

I'd agree, but then look at Luca Toni and Ribery. Behind all the cut 'n paste diatribe about glory, honour and passion regurgitated by all, money, I suspect, is what footballers prize most highly. And who can blame them? They've a very short shelf life and most are completely unemployable once their first team days are over.

I'm more worried about this 'buy out' business. Anyone understand how this works? Wenger is worried for the future stability of Clubs by all accounts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosman_ruling#Webster_ruling

Wigan was the first club to take advantage of this new ruling as they signed Andy Webster from Hearts in August of 2006. Initially Hearts was slow to react to the signing, but when Webster was loaned to Hearts' rival Rangers, Hearts took legal action. Hearts believed that the £625,000 either Andy Webster or Wigan should pay was not adequate compensation. It was well short of the four million pound transfer Hearts wanted. This amount was based on the so-called 'going rate' in the transfer market of a player of his calibre. FIFPRO, the global players’ football union, supported both Webster's and Wigan's case because of the implications of a ruling in the player's favour.

The case was finally brought before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland to clarify the wording and legality of Article 17. The court ruled on 30 January 2008 that Webster was free to sign with another club from a different national league and that, according to Article 17, he need only pay £150,000 for leaving the club for Wigan with a year remaining on his contract. This amount is generally cited as being the amount that Hearts would have owed him had he remained with the club.

This ruling in fact has established an addendum to Article 17 allowing a player who is between the ages of 23 and 28 to move in the final year of a four or five year contract provided he hands in a request to the club no more than 15 days after the end of the previous season. The club would be entitled to compensation, but only equalling the amount of the final year's wages as per the contract. In most cases that would be far less than an agreed transfer fee. In addition, the player would have to move to a club that was not in the same association as his current club. Players who are older then 28 are only required to fulfill two years on a contract no matter the length of the contract. At such a point they can opt out of the rest of their contract by paying the remainder owed to them to the club they are under contract to.

A bit scary. Clubs will have to constantly renew contracts. This is what the papers keep banging on about that Lampard may do.

With regards to Hleb I am a bit mixed. He is obviously talented but whether or not he can really deliver the goods is still open for debate. Three years after he signed for us? Those stats from Arseblog are shocking.

Anyone watch the reserves game against West Ham on ATVO?

That Jack Wilshire looks pretty damn sharp for a 16 year old. Set up the first goal with a perfectly waited reverse pass to Rui Fonte in the box then went on to curl a physics defying shot into the top left to seal the win. As young as he is, I'd love to see him feature in the Carling cup next season along with Barazite, Nordveit and Lansbury.

As for players buying themselves out of contracts, after a three (or two if the player signed when he was over 28) years of a contract the "protected period" expires and a player can buy himself out of the remaining years of his contract by paying the club a pre-agreed sum based on future wages and initial transfer fee. The reason Wenger dislikes this is that he chooses to buy young players who may play their first season or two in the reserves, so if they have a breakthrough season in the first team and the "big clubs" come sniffing they can buy themselves out very cheaply due to their low initial transfer fees and minimal salary. This means there is a significant risk of Arsenal footing the cost of training a young player then losing him before they reap the rewards unless they repeatedly renegotiate more lucrative contracts for the player.

Some may argue this would be just desserts for Wenger who was pretty hard-faced in taking advantage of the higher minimum age required to sign professional terms in Spain relative to England allowing him to pinch Fabregas and Merida from the Barcelona Academy for free.

According to the independant Flamini has agreed terms with Inter

I heard he's going to Milan. If he goes then he goes. It'll be for the money primarily so good luck and fuck off if that's the case. Same with Hleb. Rather they stayed, naturally, but it's usually downhill after Arsenal. Maybe we'll go for Barry?

Nice to see Clichy and Sagna recognised in the Prem team of the season. Fully justified, both tremendous .

I'm sure there will be a lot of rumours floating around from now until the end of August but I'm starting to beleive the Hleb stuff, I think he'll go. I am a fan and think he is a very good player but he should really be doing more.

The stats on the previous page (Arseblog - Hleb having scored only 11 goals in 3 seasons; he only has 7 assists in the league this season compared to 18 for Fabregas) are not quite good enough for a player playing in such an attacking team. He would be a loss, but if replaced with the right player it could turn out to be good business.

As for Flamini, I still think he'll stay.

I saw a mate on Friday who lives near him and he saw him last Monday. Flamini said his ankle injury isn't bad and he'll probably play again this season. As for him leaving, without asking him outright, he said he got the impression that he'll sign a new contract with us. Flamini didn't seem too stressed about it, he didn't seem too stressed about anything actually, he just seemed a bit worried about how shiny his brand new Maserati was (with Italian number plates on)

They are Italian cars so hopefully that doesn't mean anything.

Hey guess what?

My Setanta is still active, and I spent the first 20 mins suggesting that if Fabienski punches the next cross they should bring on Manninger at half-time...

MANNINGER!

I meant Mannone, obv.

ps. Why has this thread fallen off page one?
