James Lawton has a good article in the paper today. It’s about Eduardo but also about the whole ‘get stuck in’ style of play teams used by the Birmingham’s and the Bolton’s against more skilful sides like Arsenal or Manchester United.

I cant find much fault with any of that, exactly how I've felt about things for some time.

Interesting listening to the Times podcast this week. Gabriele Marcotti and Guillem Balague, an Italian and Spaniard respectively, were far more incensed and appalled by Taylors challenge than the vast majority of British football pundits have been. They made a similar point to the James Lawton article above and were particularly critical of this idea that it was partly Eduardos fault for being too quick.

'He was too good/quick for me' is the lamest, piss take of an excuse going. It really is pathetic and it's been used by players at all ages and at all levels since I can remember. I've used it myself as a cop out for a foul many a time, for shame. And it can't be used in this instance cos the angle of approach gave plenty of time for choosing to do something other than a full bodied, leg straight, studs up leg breaker. Seriously, I know it's split second timing but it's all too easy to lunge in regardless of whether you can get the ball. The consequences for the tackler are negligible.

We seen this?

The Club can confirm that following the incident during Saturday’s match at Birmingham City, Eduardo has fractured his left fibula and sustained an open dislocation of his ankle joint in the same leg.

He was immediately taken to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where he underwent surgery on Saturday evening. The operation was successful and Eduardo was transferred to a London-based hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier today (Monday 25th February), the Orthopaedic surgeon and Arsenal medical staff assessed the extent of the damage and possible time scale for a full recovery.

All being well, Eduardo will have his leg in plaster and using crutches for the next six to eight weeks. After that time, partial weight-bearing exercises will be scheduled into a slow rehabilitation process.

It is hoped that Eduardo will be running again in six months time and making a full recovery after nine months.

Eduardo will be released from hospital in a few days.

Better than expected I guess. Glad the operation was successful.

I have mate. Reasons to be cheerful but I'll believe it when I see it. I must say that he seems to have put everything into perspective and is dealing with it brilliantly. I literally can't wait til he's back.

I'm really quite upset about it. In my 20 years of watching Arsenal it's the worst injury I have seen one of our players suffer and one of the worst i've seen at all. ;)

I just sent him an awfully generic message but it still feels nice to have made the effort.

My keyboard at home has been broken for a while so I didn't have the ability to react on the day and I'm kind of glad I didn't. I was going fucking emo.

I can't really add anymore to what's been said already, especially from dogsout who has a habit of making an awful amount sense most of the time...

As for the tackle itself: I think anyone defending Taylor is missing the point. Whether he intended to hurt him or not is almost irrelevant; the tackle was completely reckless. There was no regard whatsoever on Taylor's part for Eduardo's well being. It's a contact sport but it's not a fucking boxing match; Eduardo shouldn't have to protect himself at all times. He should be able to nick the ball away from an opponent, safe in the knowledge that the worst he'll get is a kick on the ankle, not his opponent's studs and all of his weight landing halfway up his shin. It was unfortunate and I'm not convinced Taylor intended things to pan out in the way they did but it's no excuse; he acted in an irresponsible and reckless manner, and has caused serious harm to another in the process.

Sums up how I feel on it, really. I can say more.

And the whole "he was too quick" is such a load of shit. It's in the same league as "She was wearing really revealing clothes, your honour. She was asking for it"

Is it correct that Eduardo hasn't broken his Tibia?

And what is an open dislocation of his ankle joint?

Is it a good thing that the thicker of the 2 shin bones hasn't broken (as it seems is the case) and what has the dislocation done to the ankle ligaments?

Does anyone have any medical knowledge in this area?

I know we can end up going overboard with this and basically a lot of patience is required but I'm just curious I suppose.

From the earlier quote, it seems that it was the fibula and not the tibia that was broken. Although the injury did look like a typical example of a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pott's_fracture which breaks both bones in the lover leg.

An open (or compound) dislocation basically means that the dislocation projects through the skin right down to the location of the joint. and can be more dangerous than closed dislocations due to the possibility of infection or uncontrolled bleeding.

The thicker of the two shin bones (tibia) is the weight bearing bone in the lower leg, whereas the fibia acts as an attachment site for muscles that move the foot and toes as well as providing lateral support for the ankle joint.

Can you post it again? The link is broken and I'm not sure which one on the Times site you mean.

Ta.

Mike Dean’s action at odds with the tolerance of brutality

Martin Samuel

Sometimes you can’t do right for doing wrong. Take the tackle on Eduardo da Silva. Even the good guys were of no help. What should have been a watershed event in the English game is trivialised by a round of catcalling. Arsenal are moaners. Martin Taylor is as much the victim. Ban him for life. No, sorry, scratch that remark.

Good article. The first comment on that page makes a good point.

And might it even be worth considering that the English mentality of fighting superior skill with violence (or 'commitment') might be responsible for us falling so far behind out neighbours in terms of footballing ability?

Nice to see that Alex McLeish said he holds no animosity towards Arsenal.

Seems van Persie might be on the bench for the Villa match. And Toure might be fit for Milan.

I was thinking, I wonder if we might sell one of Rosicky or van Persie cos we've really been hit by their near constant absence. I like them both very much but we need week in week out players. I think he might buy two or three decent signings in the summer. If we don't win the Prem he'll have to cos our squad is pretty weak. For all the raving about the youngsters we've not really got many banging the managers door down for a game.

Arsenal striker Eduardo could have been coming to terms with his career being over had it not been for Gary Lewin.

Lewin quickly realised that one of the biggest problems would involve communication because, when a foreign player is badly injured and in a state of shock, they almost always revert to their native language.

Eduardo was conscious but distressed and talking in his native Portuguese. Lewin, making a rapid assessment of the situation, radioed to the Arsenal bench and asked them to send on substitute Gilberto to translate.

Once the Brazilian midfield player arrived at the scene, Lewin was able to use him as an interpreter and explain to Eduardo what was going to happen, how he would feel and how he should signal with his hand if he felt any new pain.

One Gary Lewin.

EDIT: Amazing scenes:

Years ago such injuries would finish a player's career but in those days diagnosis and treatment procedures were not as sophisticated.

When Arsenal's assistant manager Pat Rice broke an ankle in the double season of 1971 he played on... and on and on.

It wasn't until 10 years ago, when he complained to Lewin of a swollen ankle, that an X-Rays revealed two bones in his ankle where there should have been only one!

Born in Brazil, moved to Croatia in hs teens I think.

Yep. Took a punt as a young lad and moved from his home to freezing Croatia. Got knocked back, told he was too small etc. Got a chance but also got injured and carried on without telling anyone. His form was poor and it came out that he was injured etc. Obviously he's gone on to become a superb player at Club and international level. I'm not sure many people outside of Croatia and Arsenal realise what a talent he is. I can't remember a better finisher, actually. I look forward to seeing him banging them in again soon  .

Three bits of gossip from the papers..

Arsenal fear key midfielder Mathieu Flamini has agreed to join Juventus. Flamini is out of contract at the end of the season. (The Independent) :(

Arsenal's Abou Diaby is a reported target of Italian giants Inter Milan. (Daily Mirror) :(

Arsenal players have reportedly asked William Gallas to start acting like a captain, after he staged a bizarre on-pitch sit-in following his side's 2-2 draw with Birmingham on Saturday.

I'm a bit surprised if the Gallas one is true. I can only think that Saturday was the last straw cos given the circumstance you'd have to forgive a teammate and captain for that display. I wonder if he's as good a captain as the majority of us think?
