I reckon the cup winners getting in the champions league is a load of bollocks.

The competition is to find the champion of Europe, and realistically it's also more so all about money.

UEFA created it, changed it and tweaked it in such a way that all the top teams from the 'big' football countries would be in it every year.

Liverpool would never have been in it, Chelsea only twice, Arsenal wouldn't have been in it for the past few years, Utd would have missed a few years until this year and teams like Real would also have missed a good few years until this year if only the champions qualify. Barca wouldn't be in it this year.

UEFA want finals like Arsenal v Barca & Liverpool V Meelan. I reckon the final of Porto v Monaco is not what they had in mind while hoping for a dream final.

It might not seem right or fair but this is the elite club competition and UEFA want all the elite clubs in it every year.

Teams like the big 4 from England, Barca and Real, the 2 Milan clubs and Juve & Brian Munich. These are pretty much the giants of the competition and the rest make up the numbers i'm afraid. Some do a good job of it too, like Celtic and Rangers this season.

Much wrongness here. Platini's plan was simply to ask England, Spain and Italys FAs to hand their fourth qualification place to the winner of their domestic cup. It's not a plan to increase entry requirements so that "only the champions qualify". I doubt UEFA want all the 'Elite' clubs (whatever that may mean) if the 'Elite' clubs are playing tosh, I'd much rather watch an exciting 'new' side like Rangers or Sevilla then some of the shite that's been played by sides like Real and Juve over the last few years.

Also, if the plan is to find the champions of Europe then Porto and Marseilles reached the final by knocking out side like ManU, Real and Chelsea. Much as I disliked Portos style of football they clearly deserved to win it. Or does your plan include handicapping non-'elite' clubs?

I think it's a very good thing to allow smaller clubs the opportunity of playing in Europe, it's got to be healthy for the game and will allow the distribution of some of the UCL money, again, a very good thing.

I didn't mean Platini asked for an extra place or it was about only the champions qualifying. What i'm saying is that it's quite clear that UEFA want all the top teams in the competition and the way qualification currently is and the way the competition is played out it's set up for the 'top' teams to be in it and progress year in year out. This is not such a bad thing as the comptition is for the top clubs in Europe. The top clubs I've mentioned will pretty much remain the top clubs and if someone else can sneak in to that group then good on them.

The 'elite' clubs i've mentioned have won the thing 14 times out of the last 20.

I'm not really seeing your point then - Platini is the current President of UEFA so his views and UEFAs presumably coincide to a large degree. The competition is for the best football teams in Europe, which shouldn't necessarily be the richest teams. It would be a shame for football the same stagnant pool of wealthy clubs dominate European football in the years to come. Freeing up an extra space for the winner of the domestic cup competition would help level the playing field a little, that can't be a bad thing.

From the official web site the squad for tonight - possibly the youngest ever for a first team competitive fixture? Traore is absent on international duty I believe. I assume the young Norwegian CB is still injured.

Arsène Wenger has announced his 16-man squad for tonight's Carling Cup fourth-round tie with Sheffield United:

2. Abou DIABY (Age 21)

8. Lassana DIARRA (Age 22)

9. EDUARDO (Age 24)

15. DENILSON (Age 19)

17. Alex SONG (Age 20)

19. GILBERTO (Age 31)

21. Lukasz FABIANSKI (GK) (Age 22)

26. Nicklas BENDTNER (Age 19)

31. Justin HOYTE (Age 22)

32. Theo WALCOTT (Age 18)

34. Kieran GIBBS (Age 18)

39. Henri LANSBURY (Age 16)

40. Vito MANNONE (GK) (Age 19)

41. Gavin HOYTE (Age 17)

42. Fran MERIDA (Age 17)

43. Nacer BARAZITE (Age 17)

Average age of squad: 20.1

Jesus, Gilberto is 7 years older then the next oldest player.

Edit: Average team age minus Gilberto is 19.3.

31. Justin HOYTE (Age 22) Right

15. DENILSON (Age 19) Centre

Gibbs can play at left back, yeah?

That's what the Evening Standard reckons. Although they also say Traore will play too so maybe they are talking shit.

Wasn't Gibbs the kid that played in the Emirates cup and played quite well?

I'd heard we requested Traore stays back from international duty to play in this game. Is he unavailable?

Yes, looked very siky. Didn't look much like he could play at left back though.

Traore is not in the squad posted above. Gibbs was a forward or winger i'm sure so maybe one of the Hoyte's will play left back.

I know it says above but I just wanted to point out that Henri Lansbury is 16 and in the squad. 16. He's English, it's just a stupid spelling of Henry.

16. :)

Justin Hoyte's a defender.

Could be Justin and Gavin Hoyte playing as full backs.

Are they brothers?

I stuck [Justin] Hoyte in my fantasy league team thinking he'd do alright. Typically he's not played. When I've seen him play before he's always been very good.

Yes, they're brothers. Hoyte is OK but Sagna (the new right back) has been immense for us so far.
