Arsenal

I fully expect the rest of the summer to be a shitshow chasing Ozil and Alexis round the training ground with a new contract but it's our own fault for letting them get to a year. No other big club lets this happen with their best players. Players values are only ever rising so makes sense to keep them signed up even if it leads to a bit of wage inflation.

Anyway, nice to get a couple in early even if it makes me worry about the rest of the summer...

Competing with Letico for signing looks about right as an outsider! And I dont think there is any shame in that, they are a bloody good team!

Aye, there's this weird thing where people are talking about Atleti as a mid-table team instead of a team who won La Liga and got to two Champions League finals over the past 3 seasons.

They are better than Arsenal. One of the top 5 teams in European football.

God bless transfer laws.

I do see the Athleti interest in him as a scouting positive, there is no finer club in recent years for taking strikers and turning them into hot tickets, if they interested in him he must have something about him.

My negative head view is that if he was really top quality it wouldn't be between us & Athleti for him and he'd be going for a lot more money - the top clubs may have sniffed but none have put the money down for him, and whilst its a big fee its not a fee that the elite strikers go for.

No big club went for Christian Eriksen either, the reasons pundits thought was because of his lack of progress at the time and how his form would drop off giving doubts about his mentality. I think he's quietly been one of the most consistent players in the league since he arrived. Like Silva he is always composed, is low maintenance and reliable and always has to be in the team despite any new signings and young talent vying for a place. Everyone asks; who would you want/who is better out of Ozil and Coutinho but I'd have Eriksen over Ozil. Ultimately it doesn't matter. The difference in quality between these is marginal, their characteristics and strengths and weaknesses differ but that's it.

Arsenal grabbed two of the world's most outstanding talents in their position in their mid 20s from two of the biggest clubs in the world (how many times has that happened before?), and despite that - fa cup wins aside- had their worst finish in the league for 20 years, and were humiliated in the champions league again. Lacazette will score loads, be as great as he will be disappointing sometimes like every player is, and things will largely stay the same for Arsenal because you know the reasons for the club's lack of success doesn't fall on the apparent 'class' of each player and each new signing. So I'm surprised there's this much weight put into signings. It won't mean anything unless Wenger evolves his tactics and approach, which he's indicated he has, but time will tell..

The big mystery for me was why Real Madrid or Barcelona never went for Aguero. Athletico Madrid players generally don't sign for Real Madrid, okay, even going to another club first though..? Aguero and Messi are best friends whose relationship on the pitch was supposed to be telepathic when they played together for Argentina in their youth, but Aguero seemed keen to make his own way in his career rather than feel a need to play with Messi daily at Barcelona. For all the money Man City spent, and it can't buy loyalty but in the case of those big talents that arrived -Silva, Yaya, Aguero, it kind of did.

Is that right about Atleti anymore though? They did go through a great sequence of Torres > Aguero > Falcao > Costa, but the last few years have seen a some relative duds.

Greizmann?

Atletico punch above their weight with their financials... Larsen B is right, they're a top 5 or at least top 8.

If this was true at youth level it seemingly never translated to senior level, because whenever I've seen them at major tournaments they've always looked like they can't play together.

Oh I know, but Tim Vickery always swears by it ! And he must have seen a lot. Just generally when I watch Argentina all the other great attacking players they've got ought to be moving and assisting Messi but all too often stand and watch. They don't raise their game but just rely on Messi to do something. Maybe Aguero has rarely been fit to perform with all his injury niggles, but for all of Higuain's big misses I think Aguero has disappointed most out of that generation, as he's such a great player on his day during the season.

lol what's the neg for above, out of curiosity? I'm sorry I get a lot of information from football experts on the radio ! In terms of them not being able to play together, I dunno. Argentina rarely have a set first 11, rarely balanced as a side, Aguero rarely plays and when he does he's not the same player. Messi (again according to Vickery!) ends up dropping deep to be more involved because Argentina have slow defenders so don't push up the pitch as far as the defenders do for Barcelona, they don't trust themselves (though Pique isn't quick either), and there's no midfield so no connection to the forwards. Messi in summer tournaments always appear heavy legged and this can't help. His position seems to change a lot, not false 9 but roaming playmaker. I didn't see the March win over Chile, but a report has the formation as a 5-1-4 even, Di Maria, Messi, Aguero, Higuain as quartet. I don't see why an in form Aguero in the David Villa role, Messi on the tight, Di Maria on the left wouldn't work..if there were a few midfielders in there.

I didn't go to the game, opting to watch from the comfort of my armchair with a nice Balinese curry. Jeez, the gulf between Australia's A-League Champions and Arsenal was very pronounced. Was quite good to get a look at players like Sead Kolasinac, Cohen Bramall, Kristian Bielik, Reiss Nelson and so on.

Nelson played really well and some of the young fellas had a bit of pace to burn, although I felt some juniors were a bit ropey with their ball control, although that could have been the pitch a little.

The Welbeck penalty was embarrassing. I don't think he really wanted to score off the back of such a dodgy penalty (called handball when it hit the player's back and everyone could see it on the large screen). Theo Walcott was awful missing some easy opportunities to score. Özil was class - he had so much time on the ball. Oxlade-Chambo looked powerful and put in a shift for the 20 mins he came on. I really, really hope we don't sell him.

Lacazette came on and scored a goal by nipping between three defenders at pace and showed a ruthlessness that I don't think Welbeck or Walcott will ever be capable of. I haven't really seen us with a player like that for a while.

Arsenal have been receiving plaudits for the way they've conducted the tour, not treating it as a fly-in/fly-out exercise like Liverpool did. Interacting with fans, signing autographs at the airport etc... I feel proud that our club has respect for their overseas fans and put a proper effort in. (Shame it doesn't translate locally or with ticket prices...)

Szczesny has gone to Juve. :(

Won't miss him.  He's a terrible keeper that put his own defence under more pressure than the opposing team due to horrific decision making, abysmal ball distribution & mistakes.  Not sure what Juventus see in him TBH.

He must have really pissed Wenger off. What a shame.

He made too many mistakes.  Before he went to Roma he was dropped from the side for a period of time as he'd made several costly blunders that cost us points.

He showed no sign of improvement/progress since he joined us and the defence in front of him were terrified of what cock-up he was going to make next so they had no confidence in him either.  Thing is, he didn't even show any potential that he was a decent keeper so to get £10m or whatever is nice.

The only problem with Arsenal & goalkeepers is that we never show any interest in signing young promising keepers.  We could have got someone like Butland for peanuts before he went to Stoke but Arsenal just don't believe in investing money in this position which is why we make do with a reasonable number 1 who's backed up by a couple of mediocre stand-ins.

I'm not shedding any tears to see him go to Juve, he was pretty poor - but really don't know what the plan is goalkeeper wise.

We've got a ageing penalty phobic No1 with a short flappy unreliable number 2. Haven't seen enough of Martinez to form a view but he seems quite happy being paid to tweet occasionally and be No3.

In a market where uncapped Brazilian keepers go for 40m+ and so do young english recently relegated keepers it does seem that we've let him go somewhat cheaply
