I don't wish Ramsey ill but he's in a horrible run of form too - he's no great loss at the moment.

He obviously is a great loss because we have no one else!

We should just sell him though tbh, Wenger is clearly incapable of keeping him fit.

Watford played well first half but FFS thats a disappointing result.

The first goal you can kind of understand as it was a deflection, but the second was terrible defending.  Still not sure how teams can constantly do niggling fouls the whole game and never get a card and same with keepers time wasting and only getting booked in the 80th minute or in Gomas's case not getting booked at all.

Second was a horrorshow; Gabe throwing the ball straight to them, then no one even attempting to block the run or put in a tackle.

We have the best right back in the league who has been benched for the last 3 games.  Walcott who scored a hat-trick in his last game was benched.  Ox playing well recently, finds himself benched.  Welbeck who was outstanding at the weekend, benched.

We were scoring goals for fun when Alexis was up front, but that formation and system has all changed for no reason what so fucking ever.

What a manager Wenger is!  Lets build another statue of him.

Whilst I agree Wenger's choices were questionable, the performances at the weekend were against a nothing team that clearly were not interested. This game mattered much more and the likes of Walcott and Ox have never shown the level of consistency and quality for a top side.

You always, always, always pick players in form.  Coming off the back of a very good win and performance, it's just plain appalling management to bench the lot of them.  Unfortunately, that's what the hapless Wenger does.  He hasn't a bloody clue.

His post-match interview included this classic quote "we were not mentally ready for the game".  You fucking what mate?  What sort of dog shit reasoning is that?

What did Welbeck play on Saturday - 75, 80 minutes? No way he could be risked for a second game in 5 days. But not starting Walcott and opting for the aimless ball to Giroud was incredibly frustrating. It was clear from about a minute in that he was going to get nothing from that defence.

The difference in play in the second half with Walcott on was incredible. Better finishing (Walcott, Perez) we would have got something last night - even if it was undeserved.

I understand the ire at Wenger benching Walcott, Bellerin and Welbeck but people seem to be overlooking the injury issues involved. Injury management is a complicated process. Consider the following:

  • Bellerin and Walcott were both out for 4-6 weeks, and Welbeck is only just back from his second 9 month layoff.
  • It takes time to build up muscle strength, yes - even after just 4-6 weeks. As for Welbeck, he will be on a carefully monitored plan and cannot be rushed.
  • Fantastic performances vs Southampton aside, it is a risk to those players to play two games 3-4 days apart so quickly after an injury. Just because someone plays 60-90 minutes in one match doesn't mean they can do it again. Recovery time is the thing that can't be fixed through rehab.
  • It was absolutely pissing down out there. Wet field and a bad tackle + just coming back from injury = very risky. The injury that got Welbeck last time -- it looked innocuous enough but he was out for 9 months.

I agree some of the team selections were not ideal (Giroud and Rambo) and it would have been good to see the Ox start after his revelation at Southampton. Gabriel had a shocker but I believe he was played to give Bellerin more recovery time.

That said, this Arsenal side should've been good enough to account for Watford.

EDIT: I should mention that the 'ire' I'm talking about is the noise online, especially the peeps on Arsenal TV.

I don't see why not.  He was either match-fit for Southampton or he wasn't.  It clearly looked like he was fit and there's simply no reason why he couldn't have played a part last night.

I hate all this 'being careful' crap.  Wenger has a horrible habit of 'saving' players for big games.  Wenger has been doing it since he joined the club and it always comes back to kick him in the face.  In football your next game is always the most important one.  Full resources and focus should be on Watford, not Saturday's game with Chelsea.

Anyway, the damage is done so the players need to focus on the weekends game as any further losses will have us within a point or two of United and City when we should really have been well clear of them.

I know everyone is always pointing toward our inability to beat our nearest rivals, but games like the one last night are what cost us over the course of out season, more than the bigger games I think. Win last night and a draw on Sat is not such a bad result. It is Groundhog day tomorrow after all.

That's not how it works, Steve. If you've ever gone a long period without going for a run, think about how long it takes you to recover from that first run vs your recovery time if you regularly run three times a week.

He was fit enough to play 70 minutes vs Southampton but not fit enough to play vs Watford a few days later. The Arsenal medical staff have a professional duty to manage a player who has had two 9 month periods of serious injury. So I agree with the decision to rest Welbeck.

Agree with your other points tho'. The next game is the most important.
