We all knew it was going to happen, would rather it happened later in the competition but I'm choosing to see this as a good thing as would rather use up a precious season ticket cup game seat watching a top team than another of europes lower tier teams

In the grander football scheme of things moaning about always getting a top team in the KO stages of the champions league EVERY YEAR feels like a 'princess problem'

If you take ranking co-efficients and all that we are the 10th best team in Europe, which means unless you get a favorable draw this is the round we should go out in !

In fairness Gabriel was doing fuck all too. It's only the second headed goal we've conceded all year but I'm amazed at that-every time a ball goes into the box it always looks like we're on our heels and reacting to what the other team does rather than proactively cutting the ball out.

Needless free kick clawed off the line after no one cleared the ball. Corner results in a goal because we're not marking the right people and again not being proactive enough in defending in the air. We've been under pressure all second half but you can't justify defence like that at any time. Garbage.

What a goal. They have to just give Alexis whatever he wants to get him signed for another few years.

He will go to China.  No club in Europe can compete with what the Chinese will offer him as he'll get anything from £500k-£700k a week.

I doubt very much he's going to China at the peak of his career, these countries are always used to smoke out more money from the mega clubs.

What I don't know with him, as he doesn't interview often, is his feelings towards football. Is he a huge fan of the game and its history and traditions or somebody who is in it just for the money, so could be tempted by China ?

If he's a huge fan of the game then even if £400k a week is on offer there I suspect a lower amount of money to stay in europe would be his preference.

Question is how close to that number Arsenal are willing to get, if we offering £180k a week and Utd, City & Chelsea are already paying players £250k+ then I suspect we have an problem.

lol lads he's not going to piss about in china at the peak of his powers when he already has more money than he knows what to do with. The bloke basically just runs marathons in his spare time and fucks his dogs, I doubt he's arsed about wanting £400k a week.

It sounded silly to me too when I read Steve's post, because it's unfathomable to me.

But then so is Oscar choosing to go to China while coming into his peaks years at 25, if the deal goes through as expected. Daniel Taylor wrote an article about it, apologising every time he calls out Oscar for what he is.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/dec/17/oscar-china-chelsea

This is a player who was at the heart of the under 21 Brazil side, while players like Coutinho, Willian and Fermino were nowhere near, and Lucas Moura, Pato, Ganso were peripheral. His debut European goal against Juventus for Chelsea, his outside of his foot finish in a league game was another memorable moment in a mostly forgettable blur of his Chelsea years. It's sad. I don't know why he's not been consistent.

Also throws up his previous with ownerships.

Quote

Rafael da Silva puffs out his cheeks and gives the sort of gentle nod that advertises appreciation of the highest order. "He is the man," says the Brazil and Manchester United defender. Mano Menezes, the Brazil manager, reinforces the impression. "Put it this way," he says. "He wears the No10 for Brazil and we don't give that shirt out to just anybody."

I still think there's no chance of Sanchez going there, obviously. I'm not trying to compare player and circumstance to attribute credence to the idea. Football just has a way of disappointing. Don't really agree with Wenger saying 'clubs should be worried', because there's plenty of young players willing to take any player's place.

The big difference between Oscar and Sanchez is Oscar is shit and doesn't get in the Chelsea team, where as Sanchez is the focal point of a top European club playing in the biggest competitions and the key man for his country.

Sanchez said today he loves it at Arsenal, he will sign the deal no danger.

I want Arsenal to offer £250k+ per week to Alexis and Özil each.

1). We can afford it. We're the most cash rich club in Europe (or something).

2). It'll send a message to other players around the world that we'll pay big bucks if we think you're worth it. Do you want £275k + no champions league football or £200k and some UCL games?

3). I don't care about the parity of wages between Arsenal players - if anything we should get rid of it. If the Ox, Rambo, Theo etc want to push £200k p/w money. Start scoring 20-25 goals a season.

4). Keeping Alexis and Özil should be our highest priority. As much as I like Rambo, Ox etc... we should consider selling any of our players to subsidise keeping our two star players. Only players not up for sale are Kos (should be club captain), Bellerin (next captain?), Iwobi/Xhaka (we've only just bought him). Everyone else is fair game.

People talking about the Chinese league. I'm not worried about it as the prestige isn't there (yet). The Chinese league's will eat into the buying power of other retirement leagues like the MLS. Although I have no evidence, most of the players that go to that league seem to be ones from countries where 3rd party ownership is still allowed? So perhaps they're taking the big payday because they never saw as much of their wages as they'd like?

Oh, and predicting a 2-2 draw with City, but I'm not that confident that we'll take any points.

Quite the statistic in this Guardian article: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/dec/17/arsenal-statement-of-intent-manchester-city-arsene-wenger

Since the 0-2 at the Etihad last January, we've not beaten any top 6 opponent away in the league (Leicester aberration excepted).

Now I'm just remembering all of our horrible performances at Old Trafford when they were widely recognised to be in chaos.

paying for our usual failings in this big games, not taking chances in first half (didn't have many but needed to convert) and utterly anonymous performances from the whole team in the second

Ozil's agent won't be showing this one when he's after £250k a week

Fair play to anyone who was still optimistic about the season in December.

I was going to post after the Stoke game about how, looking at form, points and statistics, we should be feeling good about how everything is going but I found it impossible to enjoy it because "being Arsenal" has happened too many times. Decided it would be rather churlish to post it then but not now!

Looked shit in the 2nd half, not sure if that's because some of the team were tired or because Man City just outplayed us, probably a combination of the two. It can't help that Wenger just refuses to rest our 2 best players (Ozil & Sanchez). Surely he could play Ramsey at No.10 when we're playing at home against teams lower down the table?
