I'd put Mahrez on the right. Walcott can warm the bench as a back up striker/right wing or just sell him. Cazorla on the bench too or starting against less physical teams (he's getting on a bit too). For me, Cazorla isn't an automatic first teamer now and neither is Coquelin, who would be great off the bench if we're trying to close a game out. I'm hoping Wenger is building a robust (ha!) midfield that allows him to swap players out as needed so we don't lose them for 3 months at a time.

I don't think having too many good players is a problem. We need two in every position like City will no doubt have.

Xhaka and Ramsey would definitely be my choice for the middle, Ramsey looked suited to the extra responsibility with Wales. Coquelin and Cazorla for all the games the first choice need resting for. I've still no idea what we're doing with Wilshere, apart from just assuming he'll get injured again.

I think that's the only part of the pitch we look even reasonably competitive in and that's massively relying on Ramsey finding form and Xhaka hitting the ground running.

I'm incredibly surprised at the not-quite-restrained-but-not-far-off approach that every team is taking so far, I thought we'd have a huge signing every couple of days after the Euros finished. It means we're not anywhere near as far behind as we could have been, but I'm still a bit concerned we won't be signing anyone else. Mahrez and Lacazette just seem "well, they're at least a bit French, probably Arsenal" paper-talk.

It only took one signing last season to get us from 3rd to 2nd and we've signed two already.

We're not going to finish in the top 4 without teams massively, massively underperforming and they're not going to do that twice. Chelsea look wobbly, but everyone else looks stronger than before. Except Arsenal.

I was kidding, Rev.

But people have also said "United will come back stronger! City will come back stronger! Chelsea will come back stronger! Liverpool will come back stronger! Spurs will come back stronger!" for the past... well, infinity seasons.

If they can have a great season, there's no reason in the theoretical world that football exists in during the transfer window, that we can't, even without the additions that we need. Yes, minimise the probability, make your own luck, blah blah blah.

It's not worth the energy that so many people dedicate to it.

Come on, I'm not saying our work is done but on what planet do we not look stronger? We already addressed arguably our weakest area from last season with an expensive and high quality player.

I'm not convinced he's going to hit the ground running, I think he's a bit of a hopeful appeal to the disciplinary committee waiting to happen. I'm happy with the signing longterm, but replacing (in the end slightly theoretical) Rosicky and Arteta that we started last season with I'm not convinced it's a huge gain.

And last season we had a central defence pairing.

Anybody thinking this transfer window or the situation in general is ok is living in cloud cuckoo land.

We scraped second place with a total that in most seasons wouldn't get you a CL spot, have a worrying lack of cover in almost every position and are already starting the season with our usual injury woes in place (Welbeck & Per long term out, Wilshire with the dreaded un-specified knee issue).

Irrespective of people's views of the value in the fees being paid they are the market now, and we are one of the best funded teams in world football, but Wenger simply refuses time and again to address the teams failings.

Sure there is time left in the window but yet again we will start the season with not much activity over summer, and a load of players with less than a fortnights training under their belts. Not good enough

I never said anything about the transfer window being fine. We need at least two more players. I just pointed out that it's wrong to say we haven't improved when we haven't lost anyone, but have replaced that wasteman Coquelin and Arteta's corpse with an actual functioning defensive midfielder who can play football.

The Evening Standard yesterday said that Arsenal were sulking that Valencia wouldn't negotiate from their £4.2m asking price for Mustafi, which massively entertained me. Obviously there's a stray decimal point in there, but I think we all know that if they were asking for £4.2m we'd be trying to get him for £3.5m.

The Times report that Arsene Wenger will be given whatever cash he needs to secure new signings before the transfer window closes.

The article is relatively low-key, there’s no mention of ‘EXCLUSIVE’ and it’s only a couple of hundred words, but it certainly reads like a leak from the board.

Deputy Football Correspondent, Matt Hughes, writes: “Arsenal had planned to limit their summer transfer spending to £100 million…but the club acknowledge that they may have to part with more than another £70 million to provide Wenger with the players he wants in an inflated market.”

The article goes on to name Alexandre Lacazette and Shkodran Mustafi as the top targets.

Back in May, Arsene Wenger dismissed a Hughes’ ‘exclusive‘ which claimed the Frenchman, at a time when his future was the subject of intense debate, had been offered a new two-year contract. The boss was very miffed stating in a press conference:

From Arseblog.  Interesting that our Summer budget was initially 100 million with Xhaka knocking off a fair chunk of that before the window had even opened.

If this story is for real then it's proper put up or shut up time for Wenger or he's going to have a rough old time at the Emirates this Season.  Merts out, Welly Out, Jack out and Walcott severely out of form not to mention the players who we released at the end of last season.  If we have to field kids at any point this season due to a shortage of players it would be outrageous.

Considering the players who departed at the end of last season I thought that our budget would be about 150 million and we'd be going in aggressively to get players.  How wrong I have been so far!

When we went in for Vardy I thought that this would be the start of a transfer window where Wenger stopped worrying about building for the future and was going all out for one last hurrah to win the league title before leaving.  I don't know whether Vardy would have worked out but it seemed to signify a change in Wenger's transfer policy/priorities so I was pretty excited to see who we'd throw the big bucks at next...

Joking aside, Holding does look good so I don't want to be too much of a negative Nancy!  I really hope Wenger has something up his sleeve like the last minute Arteta signing or the out of the blue Mesut arrival.

Wenger doesn't seem to mind not having players in place ready for the start of the season, at least. Seems a bit silly, but at least it doesn't rule anything out if we get to the end of next week and still nothing has happened.

I rock myself to sleep each night repeating this sentence.

We're signing Lewandowski, don't worry about it.

Anyways with the players available I think we should go 4-3-3 for Liverpool. Xhaka-Elneny-Ramsey midfield, Iwobi-Alexis-Ox frontline.

Agreed. The Ox is flying and Xhaka/Ramsey stormed the Euros.  Looking forward to watching us take on the Vikings tonight!
