Well he's definitely to blame for that one. But there were two chances at least to clear the ball before it got to Zarate.

Can't be arsed to go too in because he's a sacred cow ITT and is obviously not the only one who's been awful, but that second starts with Coquelin overcommtting with a mental slide tackle then getting bypassed like he's not there.

To think I turned on my data (in the mountains of Norway) primarily to find this out...

Was it as bad as all that (besides the result)?

Yeah, it was poor. Cech had a shocker, the defence uncharacteristically shaky (even by our standards), midfield was abysmal & Giroud could play 1000 mins and still not do anything worthwhile.

I can't wait for Bellerin to come back, Debuchy looks like he's running through 3 foot of treacle all the time. Not impressed with him at all. Coquelin had an absolute shocker and he got pulled at around 60 mins. He couldn't do a thing right and looked like a player who should be playing for Charlton Athletic judging by that performance. Lets just hope he had an off day and finds his form quickly.

Ozil was once again about as useful as non-stick cellotape & was surrounded by a midfield of players equally as ineffective.

I'm not going to hit the panic button after just one game but that was a terrible performance and a very bad start to what is going to be a very tough season. Everyone needs to sort themselves out in time for next week as Palace isn't going to be easy.

very poor by us but west ham were decent (nothing more, not spectacular, just solid) and looked like a team that has had a few more weeks of pre season together, they were very organised and disciplined and didn't just sit deep hoping for the best. We hardly managed a shot on target as just couldn't get anything working.

nobody was especially poorer than anybody else, whole team seemed to have forgot how to play together. Ramsey had one of those days where you just wished he tried to pass it normally with his foot, and not try endless flicks and backheels, when you are playing badly keep it simple. Even the introduction of Fenton and Alexis didn't really alter things much.

very disappointing and very odd seeing as it was still last years team, so no excuses about them needing to gel

Can we talk about Ozil?

He doesn't get any credit for the goals he sets up and for his vision/picking out a gem of a pass which leads to something, but it's days like today where a £43m player who's had a full pre-season really ought to stand out amongst everyone else on the pitch. It's like he can't be arsed most of the time or is the guy just completely over-hyped and we're expecting too much of him?

He's been at the club a while now and he's never really got going. Is Wenger playing him in the wrong position? Is the guy just not really happy about playing for us hence his abject displays? What is stopping him from showing us what he's supposedly capable of? My patience is wearing thin with him but my frustration is mostly because I can't figure out what is wrong with him.

Ozil is just Ozil, he's not a big impact player that will beat players and go on mazy dribbles, he's about finding pockets of space and releasing runners in behind, sadly our movement was piss poor today, Coquelin and Ramsey doesn't work at all as the midfield pairing, Ramsey doesn't fit at all into our best 11 for me, I'd have played Santi and Coquelin central and had Chambo, Ozil, Walcott behind Giroud, Ramsey slows everything down, his passing isn't brilliant, tactically he's quite naïve, but he does pop up with goals so he will always find himself in the team.

When Alexis came on Ozil livened up, he played some nice little quick passes with Alexis and Cazorla but West Ham had 9 men inside their 18 yard box by that point so the damage was done.

I wouldn't dwell on the result, let's see how we respond.

Agree about Ozil not being a big impact player - he doesn't dictate games or grab them by the scruff of the neck on his own, thats just not his thing. He's a finesse player that needs the team working around him so he can play them in or pick them out. Whether that is enough for the clubs record signing and top earner is a matter for debate.

Best cure for the last one is the next one and wouldn't expect this to alter anything - be it tactics or planned transfers.

I'm just trying to remember that opener from 2013/14, compared to where we were a few months later! Hopefully it was just a bad day at the office, but the concerns raised about a potential Coq-Ramsey midfield pairing last season seemed very valid today.

Absolutely, unfortunately I'm seeing a lot of people moaning about Coquelin and letting Ramsey have a free pass because he scores some goals, the guy is the weak link in our first 11 though, technically, tactically, and today he looked straight up unfit.

I agree about Ramsey, he just seems to find himself in the way all the time and often picks the wrong option. Yet he can score a goal out of nothing which as said above is probably why he finds himself in the team.

We have to go back to the cazorla, coquelin partnership in the middle. If that means Ramsey sits out games then so be it. We played today as if all we needed to do was turn up. Hopefully this will be a huge reality check to the squad and they will knuckle down and respond with some great performances and results in the coming weeks.

Ramsey was bollocks today but he's a box-to-box, goalscoring midfielder. It shouldn't be down to him to build play, at least not primarily. Coquelin is the deepest midfielder but his passing is just not good enough and never will be. All well and good if he's racking up the tackles and interceptions, but he did none of that today either.

We need a different approach because I can't imagine a Benzema is gonna make the slightest bit of difference if that is how we build from deep.

Fucking hell. I'm in the jungle in Southern Thailand and managed to find a place to get some beer and wifi last night the game. Now leeching some internet whilst having breakfast and reading the above you'd think the players had come round and set fires to your houses; we're calling out Ramsey now? Ozil, again? Coq after 60 minutes?

I haven't seen the game and only read reports, but come on, it's only one game. You'll be asking for the manager's head next. Yea, we should beat West Ham at home and it's a really shitty, disappointing way to start the season, but suddenly calling Rambo the 'weak link in the midfield' after one ineffective game is reactionary bollocks.

Also, people talking about 'moving on', 'having a reaction' and 'not dwelling on the game'; I hope we do the complete opposite and do dwell on it. I want the players to think about what went wrong, to talk about it and dissect it, I want them to watch videos and adapt, to have a strong sense of self reflection. This is a warning and the players need to heed it.
