There would be no point getting Pedro, we might as well just pay Fenton what he wants if we're after a player like that.

Squad-wise we're at the stage now where it takes a high calibre of player to make a real step up. We will definitely be trying to make signings but essentially we're left doing the same stuff we were doing for Ozil and Alexis: waiting for the top tier clubs to make moves and then pouncing for the fall guys. If Madrid sign Reus and move Ronaldo or Bale central, it could free up Benzema. Or if Bayern sign De Bruyne it could free up Gotze or Lewa.

Ozil only became available in the last few days of the window and I wouldn't be surprised if we went into the season with no additions besides Cech, hoping to be able to snaffle a forward at the last minute (that's not to say we won't be putting the feelers out to certain players beforehand though). It's going to be hard and there's a chance that if the dominos don't fall right, we'll end up with no one, but that's just where we are. We're not big or rich enough to barge in and sign top players at top clubs unless there's some willingness from the selling club to let them go, but those are the type of players we need to kick on. I'm struggling to think of a single guy at a smaller club who improves us significantly.

For Chelsea-wouldn't-sell-us-Cech reasons I think it is unlikely, but Di Maria seems a possible that'll be for sale later in the window? Assume they want the £60m back, would you buy?

I would.

No, absolutely not. I mean, obviously he's very good and he was particularly great in 2013/14, but he's never a £60m player and we don't someone of his type. Also let's be honest, he's been disastrous in England and doesn't seem to have settled.

No thanks.

Who's place would he take in the team and where would he play? Also he is not worth £60m by any stretch.

On the left, in place of whichever non-left-sided player we put there, with Ozil/Ramsey between Sanchez/Wilshere on the right.

Moot innit, he's going to PSG.

Wenger did his wry smile when he got asked about Benzema earlier, but as amazing as that would be, I can't see Real selling because who can they get who's better? And the player isn't going to want to leave the biggest club in the world as long as they still want him.

I'm sure we'll try our hardest to do something but if I was gonna put money on it, I'd say the current squad is what we'll have come September 2nd.

Benzema seems possible, it's fairly obvious Real are a bit bored of him and he'll have noticed what has happened to Higuain's career after leaving, sudden spotlight making him one of the (potentially) most expensive players around when he was nowhere near before.

It's not likely, I don't think. But I do think it is possible.

did you film that? you were sat just behind and to the right of me, my wife and kids, was a great game for the kids, they loved seeing us score plenty of goals.

Lyon were a lot more compact before they brought Fekir on, undoubtably a great talent, but they were more on the front foot once he came on, and we picked them off on the break with ease, I really felt sorry for Lacazette, he was making runs and trying to get out of Koscielny's pocket, but they couldn't find him.

and lastly, I'm really disappointed with Akpom today, I really like the kid, but he needs to get stronger, and he needs to want it more, he just gets bullied at the moment.

Yeah Akpom got half an hour, but he saw plenty of the ball, his movement and touch are good but once he's on the ball he doesn't seem to want to get it out of his feet and beat a man, did have a cracking shot off the post following Adelaides lovely feet on the edge of the box

He looks a bit bloody good, to be fair. Great work for the goal. He's a skilful player with the size and build (already, at 17) to avoid being bullied off the ball, and he just looks like he could do/be anything he wants. I'd never even heard of him until yesterday, but I'm already a fan.

They are calling him the next Pogba in France, when we signed him and Yassin Fortune from Lens Wenger said he see's Adelaide as being able to play anywhere in midfield due to his size and ability, he does look like he's going to be very very special, great feet.
