Utter pillock going in with his head and an instant red, no argument, Onuha though a disgrace going down like he's been amputated at the knees

Ferdinand should have got a red as well for grabbing Giroud, and the initial shove was arguably worth one too. Pretty dangerous play.

*sigh* a bit predictable with the panic stations at the end although did notice:

Flamini saved our arses with his block/emergency clearance and Coq did the thing that we almost never do (but we should do more) - he hacked down an attacking player, forcing them to take a difficult free kick, rather than a shot on goal.

I think I'm okay with that.

Ref had a fucking shocker. Can we get a half decent ref for one game please?

Nice to see us go forward so fluidly, but, much like a lot of other teams in the league who aren't gonna do much, we're utter shit at the back. Utter shit.

Nice to see Tommy get a goal today as well.

Are there any half decent refs? Atkinson, Taylor, Mason...they're all fucking terrible.

Not really. Standard seems to have gone down this year and its a genuine problem. Just watching MOTD and the refs have been awful during the Chelsea game and the Man Utd game, failing to give pens, ignoring dives and failing to see fouls off the ball. Shitehawks, all of them.

It's clear that football needs some kind of challenge/review system like cricket or tennis with regards to penalties and/or red cards.

It wouldn't necessarily slow the game down if teams only get one challenge (per half? Or per game?) but games are being won and lost on these calls. Lots of other sports have similar systems and generally it works pretty well in getting rid of the absolute clangers.

Giroud is a big loss as always think we hang together a lot better as a team with him as a focal point, our 'new Emile Heskey striker who doesn't score goals' Wele doesn't do the job at all through the middle.

Alexis' level of effort and endeavour are still hiding the fact we're playing badly as a team, we're as clear a one man team at the moment as you'll see.

That would be a major disadvantage to Arsenal, though. While other teams could benefit, Arsene Wenger never sees incidents which take place on the pitch and so how would he know when to challenge?

????

Maybe it should be captains call. But I think we would benefit from it more than you'd think.

we really hung on there in our now customary manner, its a very good 3 points that the overall performance didn't really merit.

don't see the fuss about the disallowed Song goal in the 1st half, 3 offside players all stood in front of our keeper that the ball came thru.

Tony Gail as co-commentator didn't even bother to try and be impartial - last time I heard such biased one sided mic handling was when Arry Carpenter was screaming 'hit him Frank' during the Tyson Bruno bout.

Really? we started slowly and they put some pressure on in the end but to say we didn't deserve it seems a little harsh on the team, we created some good just and but for some dodgy finishing and some really good saves by their keeper we could have scored 4 or 5.

I'm surprised that more hasn't been made of the Reid 'tackle' for the penalty, clear sending off in my eyes he lifted his leg and brought him down once Santi was passed him and wasn't even booked.

Our ball retention up front though ffs, surely the frequency with which we give possession away cheaply these days, and the resulting pressure that puts on the defence, is making some of y'all see one of the things Mesut brings to the table consistently.

On paper, this is a game Arsenal lose nine times out of ten as well. We're weak in midfield, it's an Allardyce team with Carroll as the target man, Arsenal's defence is Arsenal's defence. I honestly wasn't expecting a damn thing out of this game.

With Ozil back very soon (and hopefully maybe good), Walcott almost there, Ramsey almost there, Arteta close and our defence now back to full strength (such as it is), we could have a pretty decent second half of the season. Especially with an astute signing. Aside from Wilshere we'll be only Diaby away from full strength soon, barring further shite.

Probably worth mentioning the difference Coquelin made today, I don't think for one second his the answer to our problems but it does show the difference having someone in that role can make (that isn't flamini) when they have a bit of mobility and can cover the spaces and close people down and at least put the ball carrier under some pressure rather then give them all the time they want to pick a pass or hit a ball into the box.

Is Winston Reid going to be worth buying as a back up based on today's performance? Is he better covering CB rather than Debuchy or Monreal deputising there? Is he good enough to challenge for a starting spot?

I rather hoped we would sign a quality CB than bring in a mediocre player. We have enough of them already so why do we need one more? If we did sign him I'm sure he would provide cover, but the same could be said about signing literally any other CB playing in the Premier League.

So yeah, it would be another body in the ranks but signing him is not really going to take our defence up a notch is it? If Reid was like a very young Alan Hansen or Tony Adams then yes, sign him for his potential, but he's not. I'd rather we didn't sign average players on the cheap that don't really add to the squad.
