Although to be fair, it's not as bad as Leeds at Twitter. That was amazing. They tweeted to say "Don't go to bed, more to come!" and then sold two players and tweeted "That's it, deadline day is over" :D

Many Leeds fans did swears, but all the normal people in the world did hearty lols.

I do love the way fans have persuaded themselves that he is a good signing!!

Getting behind your team? Yeah, weird that.

We needed a body and we got one, I have no doubt he will do a job for us this season. He doesn't set the world ablaze but he has plenty of qualities we need up front.

That's got nothing to do with it. You are allowed to question the clubs thinking, you don't just have to clueless nod your head and say yes.

Sanchez is a great signing, Wellbeck is not. Arsenal seem to have a bizarre policy I've not doing enough to allow the team to put a proper title challenge together. Sanago, Wellbeck and a crocked Giroud is not a strike force to win you the league or Champs league. (of course all my opinion)

There seems to be an assumption that Falcao is going to be a guaranteed success even though he's 29 and recovering from a nasty knee injury - though I would have like us to have signed him but not at the price utd are paying. His wages genuinely make me sick.

Long term I think Welbeck is a better option and as I've said I honestly couldn't get angry about it.

Yeah. They got Falcao for £20m including wages for the year. I guess he either does okay and they sign him for £45m plus another £15m a year in wages and he has no sell-on value at all beyond that, or he doesn't and they wasted that £20m. No matter what, Falcao isn't going to win them the league this year like Van Persie did on his own the other year. They don't have even the partial team they had then.

So either way doesn't seem like great value for money. He'd have probably been a good loan next season when he proved himself properly fit and United had a team that could make use of him.

Whereas we got Welbeck, who isn't exactly exciting on paper but could score a lot of goals given a chance, for £16m. His chance conversion isn't as bad as rumoured, if you look at the dreaded "stats," and so if we can make him chances he'll put a bunch away. Either it works out and we can challenge for the title (barring too many injuries at the back, obviously) or it doesn't, and the guy's 23 and English and we're easily getting £20m back for him in a few years time. Obviously the former is more desirable.

Nothing of the sort, I've always spoken fairly highly of Welbeck and thought him underrated. He's not what we really needed, and isn't enough, and I'm fairly cross we are trying to do *another* season with three proper centre backs, but it's still a good signing. An exciting signing? The best signing? Maybe not, but it was much needed.

The issue he has is that no matter how easy a chance looks there is no guarantee he'll score and if anything i'd bet against him most of the time. I like him and would have preferred he stayed at United, excellent work-rate, stamina, speed and link up play but in the area it matters most (for a striker) I just don't think he'll ever make a consistent enough goal scorer. I hope he does well though.

I hadn't really noticed how low on players you guys are in defense until it was highlighted in here. Can you just imagine if you suffered the same injuries United did a few years ago when we had something like 7 defenders out injured and played a back 3 of Carrick, Fletcher and Evra

I actually feel pretty good about the signing now. Yes he's got a lot to prove but he's young, strong, quick and used to the league. A huge upgrade on Sanogo.

I do think we overpaid a bit but given the circumstances that's no surprise.

All our signings have been good I think it's just no CB that really, really worries me.

Yeah. There was a comment in the Guardian earlier along the lines of 'Southampton signed Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid, presumably wondering the whole time why they weren't getting competition from Arsenal', which echoed a sentiment I'd had last night seeing the deal mooted and then announced. I know it doesn't work like that, and that we wouldn't have just heard he was available and gone for him if Wenger didn't already really want/like him, but transfer deadline day often seems like it's all about wanting what others got as much as anything, so there you go.*

It is telling that I'm more jealous of the signings of Alderweireld, Lovren and Blind than I am of Falcao though**.

* All that said, last year I was somewhat envious of Tottenham's haul, and that never really worked out for them like they hoped (or at least hasn't yet), so I'll be waiting, seeing and hoping as per usual.

** I think if we'd have signed him I actually think I'd have been excited but quite conflicted; he's a great player, but his injury issues would worry me, and the outlay for him is insane, particularly if those injury issues resurface, and with seemingly no chance of recouping any of it (unless he single-handedly fires them into the Champions League)..

I'm feeling okay about Welbeck but not overly-excited. Would like it if he turns out to be a good player (20+ goals per season would be nice but will accept 16+ goal p/s, one for each million) and United look rubbish for not getting the best out of him. Still concerned that we may not ever get the best out of Özil without giving him a top quality striker to pass to.

I think Wenger tried to make some serious enquiries for some CB's during the course of the window but they just didn't eventuate. My guess is that he'll look again in the January window and hope that our six defenders will last until then. Sucks, but it is what it is, so this season, instead of getting worked up, I'm just gonna trust that he knows what he's doing and try and enjoy the season's football. I got too riled up last year!

Drop Ramsey back a bit next to (preferably) Arteta, and yeah, that's the team I'm looking forward to seeing too. Potentially terrifying on the break, that lineup, and I'm still pleased about the addition of Wellbeck whilst looking at it. I really do think he'll be a positive when it comes to our counterattacking and holdup* play (especially with Giroud out).

With that said, in fairness to Sanogo*, he did win a hell of a lot of aerial duels the other day, it was just a shame that no-one ever really got on the end of most of them. Weirdly, I think Wellbeck up top would discourage the hoofing we sometimes resorted to against Leicester, which with our team is always a positive, and he's a good team player in general from what I've seen.

* Still praying he'll get that goal and then kick on, as there really is potential there. Less and less convinced it'll happen, mind.

Thing is with Alderweireld and Lovren is they probably would prefer to move to clubs where they're first choice, and we can't really offer that. Certainly not Alderweireld anyway. Lovren was £20m, only the oil clubs pay that sort of money for reserve defenders.

I'm pretty worried about Koscielny's apparent Achilles problem tbh, it's going to need some very careful management because Per doesn't look half as comfortable on the left side when Chambers comes in.

Another reason why it's a shame we have no other CB is it makes trialling Chambers at DM less likely.

However I try and come up with a starting 11, Wilshire does not fit.

Szczesny

Debuchy Mertesacker Koscielny Gibbs

Flamini /Arteta

Ramsey

Walcott Ozil Alexis

Welbeck

Would be my first choice 11 if everyone is fit, a lot of pace in that side too.

Wilshire will never quite make it anyway as he's never going to improve. He's remained at the same level since he broke into the team years ago and has showed no signs of developing. I can see him being at a club like West Ham within 3 years.

Did you watch the game against Besiktas?

Also Ramsey Steve.

Also Ramsey...
