Falcao really isn't better than RVP or an awake Rooney. He's been bought with Mata and Di Maria because he's a big name to keep people's (and sponsors) attention whilst they're not winning anything. £160m of distraction. Blind, Herrera and Shaw to an extent are their real signings, and they're pretty good.

Welbeck is a last minute replacement for an injured first team player, who also has potential. But Sanchez is the real signing and he's amazing.

I don't think stats really help one way or the other if you're trying to convince yourself that Wellbeck is a good/bad signing. He mostly plays on the left doesn't he, and hardly ever right down the middle as a lone striker?

The issue I'd have is that whenever I've seen him he's balls'ed up a lot of good chances and doesn't look very good when through on goal with time to think what he needs to do. Catch him where he only has instinct to guide him and time for nothing else and I think he's pretty good.

Still, I would be disappointed as an Arsenal fan. IMO you don't need a back up striker to Giroud - you need a striker for Giroud to play back up to. I guess the next several months will tell us whether Giroud gets straight back in the side or not, but it's not exactly obvious that he's getting relegated to the bench in the way it would be if you'd signed a player with the quality of a Cavani, Benzema or Costa.

You forgot the 1 in 27!

I do love the way fans have persuaded themselves that he is a good signing!!

No, I actually deliberately deleted it. ;)

Incidentally, did you know Balotelli only got one goal in 14 league games in his last season at City? And that Daniel Sturridge actually had quite a similar strike rate to (and was older than) Wellbeck when he joined Liverpool?

Stats!

Anyway, if it happens, I'll be pleased (in, at the very least, a "better than nothing" way), so fuck you all! :D

The worst thing about the Welbeck deal if it happens is it kind of kills the hope that we might bring in a world class striker in an upcoming window.

I know its unlikely but there was always hope...

Nah Giroud only has two years left on his deal, we'll still be after a forward next summer and will probably either sell Oli or give him a new deal depending on how that goes. Not necessarily dead in the water but there's no denying there's a dearth of top class No9s around. Everyone is jizzing themselves over Falcao and I would be too if we'd got him, but even he has only had 2 seasons at the top in his entire career, no CL experience whatsoever, and could well be totally past it with this knee injury at nearly 29.

One thing's for sure though: A front three of Fenton, Alexis and Welbeck is extremely fast and mobile. If Özil moves to No10 and still can't lay some goals on for those three then I'll be going Dude Ranch on the lad.

But to challenge for the top you need to buy players that are better than 'better than nothing'. I'd be very confused as to what Wenger's plan is, were I an Arsenal fan.

I haven't seen much of Welbeck, when he's played for England he's been hard-working but rarely threatening and not very clinical, I don't know how he's been for Man U. He's certainly not one of those players where you would say he can be anonymous for most of a game and then come up with a moment of magic. Still, it's a good opportunity for him to progress as a player - though what happens when Walcott is fit again?

Yes! Join me in pseudo-positivity corner!

We need speed, strength and directness, and he gives us it, and makes the squad stronger in general. He's not Falcao, Cavani, etc, no, but there's not many of them to go around, so I'm choosing to see this as a positive thing. I'd certainly rather have him leading the line than Sanogo (who I'm rooting for, but far from convinced by just yet, despite witnessing his four goal barrage in person :P ) just now anyway.

And yes, I'd have loved Falcao instead/too, but Fox is right about his age and knee issues, and (assuming it is) a year loan at £360,000 a week is insane. Especially so for United, with their existing striking options and Rooney's rumoured "top earner" clause meaning at least one will likely have to be out of position or on the bench some of the time.

I was being slightly facetious - I actually do think he could be quite good for us. Genuinely. I just hope he doesn't get jumped on if he doesn't produce the goods instantaneously.

When Walcott's fit he'll be wide right, and Wellbeck will probably play through the middle, I assume. With him, Walcott and Sanchez we'll have a fast, (two-thirds) strong and hardworking front three combination, which'll be a bit of a novelty for us anyway, and I look forward to hopefully seeing them running onto passes from Ozil and Cazorla.

Yup. I think I've talked myself into this. I must be mad. Or it's not happening. One of the two.

Completely agree. It should be a sign that it's just the mentals that are panicking about signing Welbeck. The big issue is 6 defenders in total in the square for four places, and we'll see this when inevitably Flamini plays CB and Rosicky plays LB or something come February.

The last time I felt this way about an Arsenal transfer was when we signed Chris fucking Kiwomya from Ipswich.

If we get Welbeck we've essentially funded United's deal for Falcao. Who's got the better deal?

It may be a stop-gap signing that pays off, who knows?

I can see the positives in the Welbeck signing (as underwhelming as it initially appears) and I hope he proves very sceptical doubters such as myself wrong. He's certainly quick & he does work hard, so with a run in the team maybe he'll surprise a few people & we'll be looking back on it as a very canny signing in a few months. The guy deserves a chance to show what he can do for us & it says something that all the Man United fans I know have very mixed feelings about it.

But I'm with you guys re the lack of a central defender coming in. There's no excuse for that one whatsoever & it's a fucking joke really. We knew Vermaelen was leaving so why have they not found a replacement when they've had the whole summer to do it? There are plenty of good quality backup centre-halfs out there for a reasonable price, I'm sure of it. Chambers has been very impressive so far but he's not enough & Wenger must know this. He's an idiot if he thinks otherwise. Hopefully we'll get away with it but for a team that is talking about a possible title challenge (yeah right) it's absurd to have so little cover at the back & for Wenger to apparently do sod all about rectifying it this window. Not much seemed to happen on the DM front either which has the potential to bite us on the arse too.

I felt really positive going into the start of this season what with Alexis & excellent replacements for Sagna & Fabianski sewn up so quickly, but the key areas have STILL not been strengthened adequately once again & with the shithouse way we're playing right now I'm struggling to see anything other than another fight for top four come seasons end. Not a good day all in all & simply not good enough from Wenger & Gazidis.

There seems to be an assumption that Falcao is going to be a guaranteed success even though he's 29 and recovering from a nasty knee injury - though I would have like us to have signed him but not at the price utd are paying. His wages genuinely make me sick.

Long term I think Welbeck is a better option and as I've said I honestly couldn't get angry about it.

They may have a great player who may also be an expensive bauble they arguably don't need, and we get a young English player who gives us options and strength in depth we sorely need.

So, yeah, maybe both teams "win", maybe neither. It's far too early to tell, but I'd rather we tried this than did nothing, and no one wins anything on transfer deadline day anyway.

I am irritated by the lack of defender though, yeah. Less surprised/worried by the lack of midfielder, though obviously someone like Carvalho would've been nice.

Nevermind a defender, I'm gutted we didn't get someone in who knew what shape pictures ought to be for Twitter. It's probably Chambers up until this hour having to cover that job as well.

Glad he's signed though.
