He might be more Vermaelen's replacement.

Only ever played RB for Southampton, he's not going to replace an experienced left-sided CB. Assume he's backup RB and fourth choice CB. If Vermaelen goes I think we'll get another defender in, and Jenks/Bellerin are surely going out on loan.

I'd have been worried if Ramsey had got injured...

As it is I'm feeling pretty good that Zelalem is still looking the part and Diaby might have his first proper season in ages. The Emirates cup should provide a marginally better indication of our prospects for the season.

It's similar to when Hodgson came in.

Lol in what way is it anything like when Hodgson came in? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that that was a rubbish attempt at trolling rather than you actually having brain problems.

Don't be upset that we signed a back up striker for £4m that's scored more Prem league goals that your main (only?!) Striker in the past couple seasons!

So it seems Wenger has pretty much confirmed chambers saying

He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in this three positions.

He hasnt played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.

According to the mirror away least.

How did Lambert score more than Rooney/Van Perise?

Or Liverpool fans trying to wind up Arsenal ones when they're in no better a position?

I saw some of these players you've signed (at the World Cup) and they were average at best.

If you don't know I'm a United fan then that's up to you, I'm not exactly a non-regular in the footie threads.

Chambers. Talk me through it.

Does he really play in all those positions? Seems a stretch no?

I like the idea of buying a young defensive "prospect" to provide a bit of backup without necessarily demanding first team football but are we saying that this is the dude that is partnering Koscielny or Mertesacker if one of them gets injured? Big fucking ask for a guy that plays second fiddle right back to Nathaniel Clyne at Saints (no disrepect to Clyne - he's decent).

It slightly reminds me of us going for Jones before we got gazzumped by Man U but he was playing regularly and well at the time for Blackburn.

My other worry is this means no defensive midfielder as Chambers is now "cover".

So yeah, for me, he's an interesting signing but he doesn't appear to immediately solve any of the issues the current squad has.

He was getting in the side ahead of Clyne for the second half of last season I think. From what I saw, Chambers isn't as good going forward as Clyne, but is maybe a bit better defensively. Only ever played RB for Saints AFAIK, but the England U19 coach has been bigging up his credentials as a centre back. I think the idea of him playing in midfield for Arsenal is a huge stretch at this point in his career. I'm not sure he's quick enough, for one thing.

I think it's maybe that Debuchy is probably not as defensively sound as Sagna, but Wenger doesn't really trust Jenkinson/Bellerin at this point and wants better backup. Long term, the idea may be for him to succeed Mertesacker as the right-sided centre back.

Also there's probably a big element of 'if we wait till next season City or whoever the fuck will be for him too'. We've got these big commercial deals locked in now, so we can always spend a bit more now and a bit less later, knowing that money is coming in.

All signs point to us still being in for a holding midfielder. I don't think the Chambers deal will have much effect on whether we get one or not.

I would guess that he is someone we have scouted but were probably looking at a transfer in a year or two once we saw how his development was going, then Liverpool starting there obsession with collecting saints players which I think might have made us step up our interest earlier than we would have normally.

Regarding the DM position I still remember when we tried playing Nasri as our DM...

[edit]

I do think our priorities are now a Defensive Midfielder, Central defender then a Striker in that order, with Central defender moving up if Vermaelen leaves.

we might get another striker if a top class one becomes available but i think Wenger thinks that Walcott/Sanchez can fill in for giroud if needed.
