I don't especially want Vela back, but fuck me if we aren't the worst club in doing transfer business. Rather than signing someone to add depth to the squad, we've managed to go back to RS and get MORE money for a player we sold years ago. Astonishing.

I know it's a long way to the new season, but this better not be a pattern for the remainder-everyone else doing business whilst we just reduce the wage bill and increase the coffers.

Don't see how the two are mutually exclusive. Are we suggesting that we shouldn't bother inserting resale clauses and so on in future then, because we can't dedicate the time to sorting the admin on them? Seems a bit daft to me.

You need players at this point, rather than a bit more money to add to the pile though, don't you?

Exactly. Sir Chipps and Wenger must be having Scrooge McDuck parties where they swim around in the vault of gold below the Emirates, laughing at the paper talk of transfers whilst throwing darts at the Under 21 team to decide who to promote instead to the 1st team.

The club needs to stop fucking around and go out and spend before every fucker else does. If Serge Aurier has an amazing WC, what's to stop another team coming in and offering him a massive contract to join them instead of us? Nothing. We should be signing people up now rather than messing about on contact clauses and having our manager spending his time commentating on games.

I don't even know why I'm angry-but this Vela shit just looks like a really bad sign to me.

The thing is we are clearly in negotiations with players but it takes time. I agree it is frustrating and the worry of failure is always there for us as we have seen it all before, but right now I'm not too worried. Deals may already be in place but may not be confirmed until after the WC. Like the fox said the other day, all the supposed ITK on twitter are pretty calm for once and all pretty much understood us refusing Cesc. Must be for a reason?

No, but you were apparently looking to buy Vela back, weren't you? But instead of that it would appear you are going to take the money instead.

To me that seems to be the wrong approach when you need to bring players in - and judging by the last few pages in here it seemed that getting him back cheap was viewed as a decent - if not Earth-shattering - option.

all the supposed ITK on twitter

What the fuck is this supposed to mean? That 16 year old boys on exam leave have decided to make up rumours about Man Utd rather than Arsenal? And this is a sign of us being prepared? Fucking hell.

At least someone gets it.

Isn't that more likely because very few people actually thought getting Cesc back would work for the team?

Some people said that, sure. Plenty of others, Arseblog included, believe we never wanted him at all and were merely trying to draw out bidders or 'threaten' Sociedad into buying out our clause.

hold on... I don't follow many on twitter, the ones I do are clearly not 16 yr olds. Also, who is to say we aren't prepared?! Gazidis has come out saying we are in negotiations, all the noises are the same so chill the fuck out and wait a bit. The window isn't about to close, it has only just open!!

So who are you on about then? You telling me that journos and bloggers who might know aren't saying anything for some reason? As soon as journos get a sniff they're desperate to tell people to sell papers and bloggers are even worse, desperate to increase page views.

If someone knows something, they tell.

And don't listen to a word Gazidis says about shit. Think he's gonna openly say "we're currently doing nothing" when ST renewals are happening and given the reaction at the Villa game last year?

So what do you believe then? That we are not doing anything right now? I don't exactly believe everything I hear but I do believe that we are trying to sign what we need, hence why we didn't take up the first refusal on Cesc. I'm not gonna go about and list who I follow but the likes of legrove is one and he is one of the biggest moaners going (also not a 16yr old on exam leave) and he's calm. All I'm trying to get at is that rather than getting your knickers in a twist because we haven't signed anyone in the first. 14 days of the window, try to be positive. If come the start of the season we are exactly the same as now I will be moaning with you, but it is too soon for summer arsenal thread meltdown

I think we're doing the square root of fuck all. Our manager who famously takes charge of all aspects of the club, including transfers, is in Brazil commentating on the WC. I'm not saying that this means he can't do shit whilst here's there, but it's not especially suggestive that his every effort is going into signing players.

Whilst I agree it's too early for a meltdown, all the teams above us have strengthened already. We've lost our first choice right back, our second choice keeper and passed up the chance to sign a world class midfielder for 18mill (buyback fee minus the money owed for Song).

Doesn't look quite so rosy when you look at it that way does it?

Also-Le Grove lol.

I personally don't think spending a bit of time sorting the Vela stuff out (which we have to do, otherwise what was the point in the clause in the first place?), nor Wenger doing some commentary, precludes us from making preliminary moves in the transfer market. Where's Mourinho right now? Or Pellegrini? Almost certainly on holiday. Where's Van Gaal? Managing at the World Cup. Wenger hasn't gone to the Himalayas, he does have access to a phone. He's also in the country where 90% of the world's top players (and their agents) currently are.

We've just passed up on Cesc Fabregas - do you honestly believe we've done that just so Keswick & Wenger can have "Scrooge McDuck parties where they swim around in the vault of gold below the Emirates, laughing at the paper talk of transfers whilst throwing darts at the Under 21 team to decide who to promote instead to the 1st team"? I'm fairly cynical about us when it comes to transfers, but that's a whole new level right there. Please tell me that's tongue-in-cheek!

At the end of the day none of us know what's happening with us, nor any other club, so why stress about it now? Only time will tell so I don't see the point in getting annoyed at this point.

I think it's probably worth remembering that Blinky had something of an emotional World Cup last night and was forced into re-living the worst moments of Arsenal last season...
