Is Villa "tricky"? Their home form is absolutely appalling. I'd say it's about as un-tricky as away games get in this league.

We should be treating every game as tricky. We're better than them, but any team in the Premier League on their day will take points off of us if we're not giving 100%. Underestimating teams like this in games like this has been Arsenal's downfall for fucking years, and it's difficult to blame the players for that if the attitude's coming from the fans.

It's pointless to call this game "tricky". Are we going to do that before every match? "Oh Coventry at home will be tricky!" There is a middle ground between thinking victory is a formality, and thinking a game will be especially difficult compared to others.

Surely the proper definition of a tricky game is one against a team a bit lower in the table, but in good form. Newcastle away the other week, for instance, when they were in a great run and we were tired. That's tricky. Not the team with one of the worst home records in the league, after we've had 9 days rest. And note that saying that is not the same as saying we only need to turn up and we'll get three points. This isn't complicated.

Is it pointless to treat it as tricky, like I actually said?

How can it possibly be harmful to approach Coventry at home in the same way we'd approach Liverpool away? Whereas assuming Coventry are no threat has the potential to make us look like idiots.

Jesus. So every game is either "tricky", or "a foregone conclusion"?

No game is a foregone conclusion. No one ever thinks that about any game unless they're a cretin. You still need to show up and put some effort in, no matter who you're playing. That shouldn't really need stating.

To me, if you're going to call this game tricky then you might as well say it about literally every game in the league, which makes the whole term pointless. That's all I'm saying. I'm not claiming it's going to be a piece of piss and we'll win 6-0 without breaking sweat.

edit:

It's not a pointless approach for the manager and the team. For us talking about it on rllmuk? Pretty pointless I'd say.

Also again, saying the game isn't "tricky" isn't the same as saying it's "no threat". To me that's obvious but it looks like I'm in a minority here

No one here thinks we just need to show up to collect three points, in any game. It's only last season we lost to Bradford and Blackburn. I wouldn't have thought that would need stating tbh; we've been burned so many times that it should be obvious.

This is an awful lot of posts arguing over semantics of what constitutes a "tricky" fixture though, so probably best to agree to disagree on this one.

Park's on the bench in a role that can only possibly be to make up the numbers. I can't even conceive of a series of events which would lead to him actually being brought on.

He's been on the bench a couple of times so far this season

Fingers crossed Monreal’s injury isn’t as bad as feared. A broken metatarsal is going to put him out for at least 3 months I’d have thought, and we’re already short on bodies in defence. If that is the case then I think we’ll have to try and bring a centre back/right back in this window, with Sagna/Flamini/Vermaelen deputising for Gibbs in Monreal’s absence.

Seeing a lot of moaning about Ozil this morning, which flabbergasts me to be honest. I can only assume the people who complain about him had never seen him play before and were expecting something more explosively spectacular. His contribution is often subtle, but in pretty much every game he does things that no other player on the pitch could do. He can offer more, and when he’s settled in better I’m sure he will, but personally I’ve been extremely happy with his contribution in virtually every game so far. And if you watch Real Madrid, it's abundantly clear how much they miss him in the final third.

Podolski looked a bit miffed at not getting on last night, but I think Wenger made the right call given that we were under the cosh. If it hadn’t been for Cazorla’s moment of madness letting Villa back into it then I suspect he might have got a run out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start on the left against Fulham, though, perhaps with Ox on the right. Arteta will probably come in for Flamini (who had a good game last night I thought, sitting very deep by his standards), and Gibbs at left back. Bearing in mind that we really can't afford any further defensive injuries as we go into February, it might also be an idea to give Sagna a rest too.

Pretty much spot on, I didn't watch the game last night, I did listen to it on Five Live though and the commentators on there were full of praise for how both he and Wilshere both manage to make time for themselves when on the ball, they weren't specifically talking about space and tried to iterate that they don't always need space, just time on the ball to allow others to make/find space for themselves.

people who moan about Ozil are the kind who used to get at Le Tis & Hoddle for being lazy - there is a still a surprisingly large number of football watchers who value comical '110% effort' and distance ran in match.

for those who don't judge a player by such things this will help you bore your pals/colleagues when discussing who we need in the window

Apparently Ramsey could be back in the squad for Fulham, although I'd be surprised if he started.

If we don't see a start for Podolski in this game, considering how ineffective Cazorla and Gnabry were in the previous match, then you have to assume Wenger just doesn't trust him to be anything more than an impact sub, and he'll probably be off in the summer. I think he deserves a shot, so personally I'd like to see:

----------------Szczesny--------------

Sagna--Mertesacker---Koscielny--Gibbs

----------Flamini----Wilshere-----------

-----Ox---------Ozil--------Podolski-----

-----------------Giroud----------------

Subs: Fabianski, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Arteta, Ramsey, Cazorla, Gnabry
