As illustrated yesterday with Podolski, our team is geared towards Giroud. He's not just a big lumbering target man, he actually works immensely hard all over the pitch which is vital to bringing in the rest of the team. That doesn't mean showing passion, that means actually being good at closing down the opposition, getting back when we've switched to a defensive shape and being active for the entirety of the match.

Bendtner gives it a good go but isn't as good in the role, despite being a more clinical striker. Berbatov (whilst I'd be willing to give him a go as a stop gap option) would not do that job; he'd definitely be a backup.

You're joking, right? He's never making the effort he needs to to play up front in our system

Not at all. Maybe Giroud's pressing is important against the big sides, but against the lower sides who sit deep and aim to frustrate he's another classy, imaginative attacker.

Also the 'lazy' tag is so boring.

We do seem to have forgotten how to play with no focal point up top that everyone else plays off. Dunno about Berbatov, he doesn't seem a great fit to me. Probably depends how badly Bendtner is knacked but it could be he's the best guy actually available in January, on a 6-18 month deal.

I assume we'll have to play Giroud against Tottenham even if he's not 100% because we sure as fuck don't want to be playing Podolski there again.

Giroud and Gibbs are still out for tomorrow, and possibly Ozil too, along with longer-term absentees Bendtner, Ramsey and Ox, who are all 2-4 weeks away.

For some reason there are rumours going around that Zelalem will start, which seems very odd to me because we're not short on midfielders atm and we have 9 days off after this game. It's up front where we've got problems.

I'd like to see:

----------------Szczesny--------------

Sagna--Mertesacker---Koscielny--Monreal

----------Flamini----Wilshere-----------

----Walcott-----Ozil-----Cazorla-----

-----------------Gnabry----------------

Subs: Fabianski, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Arteta, Rosicky, Zelalem, Podolski

Gnabry has played No9 for the reserves a few times and done well there. I can't imagine he could be any worse than Podolski generally is when he plays there. Won't happen though.

Wenger has made a couple of pivotal buys in January though, in Reyes and Arshavin. It's not like he completely disregards it.

Personally I think he'll try for someone like Diego Costa but won't succeed (because why would Atleti sell him now when they're doing so well). Despite what Arsene said I don't think someone like Berbatov is impossible, so we'll have to see. With that though I think it will depend on how long Bendtner is expected to be out for; if it's just a couple of weeks then I don't see the need for a stop-gap striker really and I'd imagine the manager will feel the same way, but if it's a couple of months then that's a different story.

edit: looks like Ozil took part in full training today so he'll probably play tomorrow. Hopefully he is properly ok and we're not risking him, though

edit2: the other thing with Diego Costa is, I'm not sure he's actually that good. When there was talk of Liverpool signing him in the summer I said he wasn't worth £21m. He probably is now I guess, but his current good form could easily be a purple patch as he's certainly never shown anything like this quality in the past. He's also playing in a weaker league overall than the EPL, and his physical strength would be less of an asset over here

You did indeed. I must say I've been surprised by how well he's been playing this season. Didn't think he had this level in him, frankly. Still not totally convinced myself though, at least not for £35m or whatever figure is being touted.
