I know. However he has so long to move out of the way that you have to assume he's wilfully blocked the ball with his arm. Otherwise what is he doing? He lifts his arm into the path of the ball.

edit: besides, it's how the laws are applied that's the important thing. Taken super literally, you would never ever see handball given apart from stuff like Suarez vs Ghana. Clearly that's not the case though, and generally handball is given if the player had a good chance to avoid the contact, and not given if it just gets hammered at their arm from close range.

But the ball clearly bounces off his thigh onto his arm. No way would he have been expecting that or be expected to get his arm out of the way in time

I'm amazed you think it is. The laws are quite clear. The handling of the ball has to be deliberate. There is no way that it was deliberate, and referees are told that any deflection onto the hand, unless the hand/arm moves towards the ball, is not hand-ball.

I think this rule is bollocks.

There should be two separate offences. Handball, and deliberate handball. For handball you'd be given a free kick or a penalty any time it struck an opponent's hand, for deliberate handball you'd get a free kick or a penalty and the offender would be booked or sent off depending on the seriousness of the offence.

His handball wasn't deliberate but it potentially prevented a goalscoring chance, and we should really have had a penalty. Obviously the referee made the right decision based on the law, but the law is so wrong.

Saying that, I guess you'd get cheating fucking strikers chipping the ball up from two yards onto peoples hands and the game would be fucked. I dunno.

Wtf, it's heading straight towards his forearm, hits his thigh then bounces onto his upper arm. The deflection makes no difference. What are you watching?

The deflection makes every bit of difference. Because he has managed to get his knee/thigh up in time to block it. The ball can go anywhere from that point. What YOU are watching is a slow motion gif. In real time he's started moving his arm up and away from the ball in the milisecond he's had to realise its bouncing upward. Its never a pen.

The only way it could possibly have been one was if it did in fact become trapped between his thigh and arm and the ball had stopped for a split second.

I' sorry but that's a penalty for the handball. The ball traveled a long way before it hit his arm. He also didn't make enough effort to move his arm out of the way, instead trying to block it with his knee. It would've hit his arm if his knee wasn't there which shows he wasn't really trying to move his arm out of the way. More trying to block it at all costs.

Its that old nurshell "On another day in a different game with a different referee it would have been a penalty" unfortunately it went against Arsenal today, it's just frustrating that so much is dependent upon the interpretation of a solitary human being.

No, you don't understand... The ball hit his knee. Then travelled 3 inches to his arm. Its very simple. If it directly hit his arm then yes, that's a pen. If a player goes up to head a 40 yard ball away and it subsequently hits his arm, you can't say he's had 40 yards of time to get his arm out the way.

On another day maybe a different ref awards the pen. It would still be an incorrect decision. I really don't understand how people can't accept the Law of the game. It isn't open to interpretation.

So rather than move his arm out of the way he moved his knee to intercept. he took a risk and personally it shouldn't have paid off as it hit off his knee and onto his arm. The ball traveled a good distance so even though he didn't intentionally handball, he denied walcott getting the ball. When defenders jump for the ball and they accidentally miss the ball and it hits their hand it's a pen. Earlier in the game today The city fans were screaming for a pen for handball against flamini. The difference being he moved his arm out of the way and the ball hit his chest.

It travelled about three inches from his leg to his arm. If you want any kind of case you need to establish whether the ball would have hit his arm without the deflection, and the angles I've seen haven't been conclusive.

If I was an Arsenal fan I'd be more annoyed about the Milner penalty. I really hate seeing that kind of thing being given... I'm pretty sure the commentator on MOTD just said (unless I misheard) something like "He was going down anyway, but contact was made so it's a pen"... urrrgh.

We're the leaders and got beaten 5-2 by a superb Man City side. We lost to a poor United. I wouldn't put a penny on us beating Chelsea.

EDIT: 6-3!

Massive shit posting from you today it has to be said. It sounds like you weren't actually watching the game but are still posting numerous comments about how crap we are? lol

For me the mitigating factor to that is that it's going to hit his arm anyway; the deflection just makes it hit a different bit of his arm. But as I said, I dig why it's debatable and others feel differently.

The thing is, it wasn't going to hit his arm because he was always going to get his knee in the way. That's a bit like saying "it should be a goal because it was going in until the keeper stopped it" ;)

Deary me, I've posted NOTHING about the game mate. What have I posted about the game? Quote it. I've asked questions about the performance and some general comments. You've turned into some kind of boring know it all recently and you've got a nasty, snarky little streak that I don't particularly care for so don't bother replying to me again thanks. Aim your playground anger at someone else or better still just fucking do one.

Posting lots of possible team line ups coz I'm bored at work = boring know it all. :)

Dude when is anyone ever nasty in this thread? It's easily the nicest and least retarded team thread on here. Really weird assertion there. Anyway I sent you a soppy PM - sorry for being stroppy. x
