I suppose we should be proud to get out of the group of death. It's a good effort from the boys.

Would've been nice to finish top but had we lost by three, I could see the rest of our season would have gone to shit.

I've a feeling we'll draw Real Madrid next round. Anyone but Bayern will be good for me.

That old chestnut again! It would have been much better to meet those teams later in the tournament. We done fucked up good.

Edit @toythatkills

Agree it's a fuck up. Whole approach was wrong. Just trying to look on the bright side so I don't get super annoyed.

Why though? If you think Barcelona are going to beat us now what difference does it make to Barcelona beating us in the semi-final? If you don't think we can beat them then it doesn't matter what round we play them in because the result's the same, we go out. I'd argue it'd be better to go out early if you think we're not going to win it anyway to concentrate on the competitions we can win.

The alternative is that you think we can beat Barca in the semi-final, in which case why not beat them in the next round instead?

Man, when I look at the teams we could have played it's certainly a missed opportunity:

Bayer Leverkusen, Zenit St. P, Galatasaray (Drogba would've killed us tho), Olympiakos, Schalke 04 and AC Milan. :-(

That said, I think we're the team none of the big boys want to draw. We've beaten Bayern and Barca in recent years and when we're on, it's aaaaaawn!

The problem is the next game comes around games against Utd and Spurs. It would have been nice to have an easier match, and with a better approach from the manager and players we could have had that.

Looking at the games we could have got though, we'd have pretty much drawn a top-class European side anyway, or we'd have had an "easy" game which all seem to involve 10,000 mile trips to the arse end of nowhere. Not ideal between difficult PL games.

We missed Sagna I think, really hope he's back for Saturday but it doesn't look promising. I also really hope that's the last we see of Flamini-Arteta in central midfield, certainly if we're not playing Walcott. Without Theo or Ramsey there's absolutely no one running in behind and Giroud gets too isolated.

Still, none of the group winners are going to relish the prospect of drawing us (or Man City), that's for sure. I'm not sure I'd put the house on us beating Bayern over two legs, but we have half a shout against all the other teams I think, as long as we play well.

I desperately want us to be more positive on Saturday. I want Walcott to start and really get at City's shithouse left back. I also think Monreal deserves to start. Sadly though I can't see it happening; I think Wilshere will come back in on the right, Ramsey will play instead of Flamini, and we'll be otherwise unchanged.

edit: oh and it would be nice if our centre forward could maybe score a bit more too tbh!

edit2: I do think Wenger and Per were honest and correct though when they said mentally we weren't quite there as we were stuck between 'stick' and 'twist'

How I hope we'll start on Saturday:

----------------Szczesny--------------

Sagna--Mertesacker---Koscielny--Monreal

-----------Ramsey----Arteta------------

---Walcott-----Ozil-----Wilshere-----

-----------------Giroud----------------

How I think we'll actually start on Saturday <_< :

----------------Szczesny--------------

Jenkinson--Mertesacker---Koscielny--Gibbs

-----------Ramsey----Arteta------------

---Wilshere-----Ozil-----Cazorla-----

-----------------Giroud----------------

I honestly don't understand all the the people saying 'you've got to beat the best' and 'better to meet these teams earlier'. It's all nonsense imo. You only have to see how dissappointed all the players were and Wenger to understand the impact it has. Take nothing away from Napoli but we were good enough to go there and at least score ourselves. Klopp must be chuckling at his luck!

A massive opportunity missed. Can only hope for a positive response against city but tbh, I'm worried now. :(

Totally but the later you meet them the better. It's a massive game we just don't need around that time.

Like I said though, you'd prefer a trip into the middle of Russia at minus 700 degrees in the middle of a hard run of games? I think there's probably one team left in it who we could have drawn and it would have been seen as a "really good draw," everyone else has drawbacks so it doesn't really matter.

I'd much rather be playing Bayern than Bayer. You want to test yourself against the best. If a set of freak results meant we won the Champion's League by beating Leverkusen, Schalke, Galatasaray and then Olympiakos in the final we'd be like, yeah, we won the Champion's League, but it would be really fucking unsatisfying.

But our chances of winning the competition (lol) are diminished by probably having to play Bayern, and it has a knock on effect on our league fixtures too. That run is going to be massively draining, physically and psychologically. Far, far better to play Zenit or Schalke.
