Three of them failed to clear the first man. Otherwise, great debut.

Exactly. Somehow he's managed to take corners exactly like the rest of our team, and so soon after arriving. The boy is a bit special to adapt so quick.

What on earth has he got on that karibiner. Can't fathom why he has gone to Barca, he's more Hleb than Cesc.

I can understand why HE has gone to Barca. He must think he has won the fucking lottery.

I have no idea what Barca are thinking. Which is what you probably meant. ;)

It would be nice to sit down with their manager (and a translator) for 20 minutes just to get an explanation of why out of him. You're already trying to follow Guardiola having never managed a football team before...Why would you try and make it even harder for your self by signing an awkward player that has literally none of what a Barcelona player needs (eg. Positional consistency, ability to maintain possession, perfect teamwork) for millions of pounds? You really have no defensive midfielders in your academy, Barcelona?

If he was going somewhere like, say, Newcastle I think he'd be worth the money, just about. It'd make sense, at least.

Barcelona are mental.

Surely they'll play him?

I doubt it.

But yes it's his versatility and ability to play at the back that attracted them to him apparently.

Not his ability to turn up late for training, train sloppily and have a generally poor attitude, funnily enough.

They've signed him as a utility player, haven't they? He'll play in defence if there are injuries, and be their replacement for Keita in midfield. It's as much as response to the fact that Puyol and Abidal are getting old as anything. I think he'll be happy with a bit-part role as long as they're paying him enough.

In other news, Cazorla sang The Macarena as his initiation song, which is nice. I can only imagine the kind of Euro-trance horror show that Podolski put on. Giroud serenaded everyone with a Serge Gainsbourg poem and that coupled with the gentle vibration from the coach seats meant we were 30 minutes late for Saturday's game.

That sort of makes sense, but he's just not dedicated enough to be dropped in to any position once every few matches and perform to their standards though. He's going to be a disaster.

Bendtner has to go (sadly), which will be a nice bonus in terms of wages. I can't see Squillaci going, even if a new defender comes in. Getting rid of Chamakh and Park seems a bit silly too, at least one of them should stay. I'd say Park, as he must be on lower wages, but probably both will stay.

Is Denilson still kicking around?

We had to loan him to Sao Paolo again as they didn't fancy/couldn't afford to buy him. The other slightly shitty thing that has come out since Song left is that he was on about £50k, which is apparently the same as Denilson and Bendtner. This is for a guy who played more games than anyone apart from RvP last year. We need to look at our wage structure again.

I think Arsene would acknowledge the the egalitarian wage structure hasn't worked out, and we're already moving back to more of a traditional meritocracy.

Bendtner, Squid and Park are all going aren't they? Wenger has said as much. Chamakh will probably stay at this point I'd have thought, unless things Spuds thing isn't made up.

There's no way Park is on £50k a week.

Of the others, I can understand why Squillaci and Chamakh might be on big money, because at the end of the day they were desirable players when they joined, but they just haven't worked out. The only one you could complain about is Bendtner, because like Denilson and Diaby, he hadn't done anything to show he was worth that big pay packet.

However at the end of the day, we can't really complain about players being allowed to run down their contracts, while also bemoaning the long-term deals offered to other players. The two positions are contradictory.
