More than happy with that. I think the most important thing for the first game was not to concede a goal. You can already see that we're just as creative as before, it's just about getting our new strikers to start converting chances and waiting for the team to gel. Cazorla already looks special.

I can see us maybe picking up a win at Stoke and then getting one at Liverpool too, especially if City beat them as badly as West Brom just did.

I saw mainly positives to be honest. You know, It's hard to beat a team that set themselves out to play like that - especially first day back.

Gervinho looked like he might be the one to provide something, but it's very hard to be on the wavelength of man who appears to have no wavelength and it never quite happened. It is great to have a guy equally happy to beat a defender on the inside or the outside though - if he could just sharpen up that end product a bit we'd a very, very serious player on our hands.

Cazorla had some good ideas too and I thought Diaby was surprisingly disciplined and economical in his role.

I thought Walcott was poor again - to be honest his position is the one where I think we would see an immediate improvement if we could get some really good in. I'd even be happy to see Cazorla played on the right and someone else play through the middle. I think his best role is as an impact sub and although he does come up on the end of moves regularly enough when the game suits, too much play breaks down when it goes through him and in games like the one we just say through, you can't get away with that. He's just an incomplete player and you can't demand a big contract if you've as many holes in your game as him.

Arshavin just gives the ball away. It's his thing - he's a liability and shouldn't be playing. He's far more likely to cost us points than secure them.

Spelt is a type of flour that you can make all sorts of shit out of, including northern cakes and thing. Misspelt is an alternative spells of misspelled.

So, while misspelled and misspelt are interchangeable spelt and spell ain't. (I think)

I hope this thread never changes. The game is barely an hour dead and we're talking about spelling and flour. Great irreverent action.

I'd try and move the subject back onto Song but I feel we've all had our piece on that, hardly the clubs best kept secret. Hope to god we use that money for a replacement.

Presumably they spent £35m knowing (hoping) that they'd get £25m back from van Persie. This new £16m has come from nowhere though, who could have predicted that Barcelona of all people would want Alex Song?

In theory, they weren't planning to have a profitable summer, so if they stick to the plan that's £16m they'll spend rather than hoard.

On topic: I like cakes.

Just got back. Good game, Gervinho and Cazorla looked great. Dreamboat should have scored with ten minutes to go. Sunderland were time wasting in the first half which, for the first game of the season, was impressively negative even by that shitebag O'Niell's standards. Good vibe at the ground - almost, dare I say it a carnival atmosphere.

Few boos at the end seemed a bit harsh.

Just back and the boos were more directed at the sunderland fans reacting to the whistle like they'd won the champions league

Cazorla looked very promising, walcott was shit, gervinho looked brilliant and shit usually at the same time and i stand by assessment that Giroud is not going to be a clinic striker (i may be wrong but thats my hunch)

So a tedious nil nil and the stench of thousands of blokes BO, not the start we dreamed of

Just got back, thought there were plenty of positives. Gervinho had a very good second half, he can be frustrating but has alot about his game. Walcott's position is under major threat for me when the ox is back. Cazorla is just pure class! Love that boy already. Arteta put out fires all day. Our midfield three looks very strong. It just didn't happen today. Sunderland were very negative but I'm not suprised.

It would have been really nice for Podolski and Giroud to score on their debuts, but it was a bit ambitious really. The rest of the team were fine, striking form will come - they've both got it in them.

Not a great start, but certainly not a bad one.

PS. In the bits I saw (about a third of the match) Cazorla didn't have a notable performance by his standards.

Wenger recently said he sees Chamberlain as a central midfielder, for what its worth.

He had some good spells but didn't control the game, what little I've seen of him before suggests he can do even better. In fairness it's his first competitive game for us and he did just do an 9000 odd mile round trip, scoring in a 2-1 win for Spain on Wednesday.

If that's not a notable performance we're in for a treat. Little fella was on fire yo.

Bad day for Walcott but what do you expect a speed merchant to do against a team like that? If he is sensible with his contract demands I'd keep him but if not I wouldn't worry about losing him before August 31st.

I enjoyed this comment on the BBC about Song going:

"ѠƐ need alex τ̅☺ remain at arsenal pls arsen wenger...⌣̊┈̥-̶̯͡»̶̥A̶̲̥̅♏‎ from ikenne ogun state i̶̲̥̅̊n̶̲̥̅̊ nigeria"

At least they went to some effort.

A statistical look at Santi Cazorla's unbelievable debut.

Despite Arsenal not scoring today' date=' Santi Cazorla was absolutely phenomenal. That's no exaggeration. Had it not been for Sunderland keeping 10 men behind the ball at all times and Arsenal's shaky finishing, Cazorla would have had a couple of goals and a couple of assists.

The ever reliable 'Who Scored' gave Cazorla a rating of 8.3 for his debut - for a bit of perspective, David Silva and Juan Mata averaged scores of 7.5 and 7.3 last season in the Premier League. Obviously it's hard to compare a one off to an average over the course of a season, but it's all we have to go by at the moment.

Cazorla is known for his attacking play, but made a defensive contribution which is well above the Premier League average. He made 3 tackles and 2 interceptions, making one foul in the process.

Offensively Cazorla was almost flawless. He made 3 successful dribbles, had 4 shots on goal and made a phenomenal 7 key passes. No other Premier League player made more than 2 key passes today, whilst the entire Sunderland team made just 3 key passes.

Over the course of the game Cazorla made 77 passes, with 72 of those finding a teammate, giving him passing accuracy of 93.5%. That also means around 10% of Cazorla's completed passes were key passes.

If you don't like to listen to stats, simply watch the highlights of the game to see how good Cazorla was. He was absolutely everywhere. Arsenal's best player by a long way.[/quote']

Guys, I've got some bad news. According to the Sun, we were "Plunged into crisis last night". I was actually feeling reasonably positive, so obviously this news that we are officially in crisis (again) has come of something of a shock.

Ah, feck. Struck down by a bad case of non sequiturs, it seems:

"Arsenal struggled without RVP and Song on an opening day of the season which saw both Fulham and Swansea smash FIVE goals."

just watched motd - very impressed with Cazorla. What stood out for me was how much Arteta seemed to trust him with the ball. This thing Rio Ferdinand said about teaching kids to accept the ball under pressure - they should just show them a video of Cazorla yesterday

Cool vid, thanks.

Obviously not on .com yet, but it does seem like Nuri Sahin is wrapped up. Gives quality cover throughout central midfield, which is invaluable until Wilshere and Diaby can prove their long term fitness.

I've seen him play mostly as a regista for Dortmund, but he's got enough about him to play higher up the pitch if we want to switch Cazorla out wide for some guile on the flanks.
