Arsenal

He's not stayed fit for one season in his entire career. There's absolutely nothing to suggest this one will be any different. It'd be great if he was available, but he'll get injured on September 1st when it's too late to do anything about it and we'll all be cursing our continued lack of forward planning.

Well it all seems like Cazorla is virtually done, but like most arsenal fans, until it is on arsenal.com i dont trust the reports. I'm very excited about this signing! Real intent from us to correct past mistakes and strengthen the team with experienced and quality players.

Guardian are reporting that Cazorla is done, now.

Still waiting for the official website, but there's a pretty real chance our midfield options could look like this:

Wilshere, Arteta, Ramsay, Cazorla, Sahin, Song, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Diaby, Rosicky, Ryo (& Arshavin).

In the tiny chance that everyone's fit, who the fuck do you pick?

Everyone fit? Fuckin' lol.

Ryo will go on loan. Arshavin I can only see staying if Walcott goes, or no one will take him. Song might leave as yet, if Barcelona truly do want him. I mean let's be honest, he's gonna go for that isn't he. Why they'd want him though I'm not sure, because he gives the ball away constantly.

Anyway first choice at the start of the season would probably be Song-Arteta-Diaby maybe? Or maybe Cazorla if he doesn't play out wide. I dunno. It'd be a fucking nice problem to have though, that's for sure.

Edit: if Sahin and Cazorla do sign, I dunno where that leaves poor old Rambo. He's still young of course, so it's not the end of the world if he plays less next season. We have no idea how much Wilshere and Diaby will be able to play, and Arteta and Rosicky aren't getting any younger. But at the moment it does look a little precarious for him.

Plus Frimpong on the fringe and Coquelin.

Just for fun, assuming our current first team squad is 100% fit, staying and ready to go what would be your fist choice XI? And for bonus points, how might that change if we complete on the two new possible signings?

I'll go for..

Szczesny

Sagna Vermaelen Kos Gibbs

Wilshere Song Arteta

Chamberlain RvP Podolski

No idea about the other two we've got lined up so I'll pass on that :P .

EDIT: Thinking about it that leaves..

Fabianski

Jenkinson a tall German Djourou Santos

Ramsey Diaby Rosicky

Walcott Giroud Gervinho

The one place we're scarily short, in theory, is a second keeper.

If Fabianski is staying then there won't be a new keeper signed I wouldn't have thought. They'll probably just replace Mannone with Martinez and leave it at that.

Anyway assuming everyone was 100%, from what we currently have I'd probably go with: Szczesny; Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Song, Arteta; Walcott, Rosicky, Podolski; Van Persie

However that's fairly irrelevant, so assuming Van Persie leaves at the very least, and we do actually sign the guys we're after, I'd go for:

----------------------Szczesny---------------------
----------------(Fabianski, Martinez)-------------
------------------------------------------------------
--Sagna-----Mertesacker---Koscielny---Gibbs
(Jenkinson)--(Djourou)---(Vermaelen)--(Santos)
-------------------------------------------------------
-----------------Song---------Arteta---------------
--------------(Coquelin)--(Sahin, Wilshere)------
-------------------------------------------------------
--Walcott------------Cazorla-----------Podolski--
(Chamberlain)--(AD2, TR7, AR16)--(Gervinho)
-------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------Giroud-----------------------

Interesting call on Mertesacker there. Possibly if he pushes on massively from his introductory season but it leaves a lot of covering to be done by Kos. Although you could say the same about Vermaelen but he's more mobile. I'd say Kos plus one though, naturally.

Also, I do really like the idea of Kos and Vermaelen being able to bring the ball out at pace and with quality but Mertesacker is deffo the stay at home, career defender we could ideally do with.

After last year Kos is my number 1 CB for us, i just dont rate Verm as a defender, sure he tries hard and runs about lot but positionally he's poor and is often in the worng place.

Good chap, good attitude, not a top drawer defender

Big Mert will be undroppable by Christmas, mark my words. He was gash when he arrived but got better and better as he went on. I reckon Arteta or Sagna would have been a better choice as captain than Vermaelen as he's 1st down on the team sheet now when he probably shouldn't be. When everyone's fit (stay with me) we have an enviable set of centre halves to pick from. Come to think of it it's not a bad squad at all if Sahin and Cazorla turn up.

If Sahin does join Cazorla at Arsenal, you have to assume that either a midfielder is leaving (Song?), or Arsene is finally wising up and treating the guys with lingering, long-term injury issues as bonus players that we have enough depth not to miss too badly.

You'd have to then assume that we're basically not really counting on any significant contribution from Diaby or Wilshere next season, which is of course very wise. Wilshere in particular should be used very sparingly, because there's going to be a media clamour to get The Saviour Of England playing regularly ASAP, and that probably isn't going to be in his best interests.

Edit: interestingly the one place that would then look potentially weak is up front, sans Van Per$ie. We'd have a good defence and loads of quality midfielders, but we'd be relying on two guys new to the league to grab the majority of the goals.

I am feeling more and more like if a decent offer came in for Walcott we'd take it.

You go through all the permutations of how we might be expected to line up with the new signings, and I think we might play Cazorla wide rather than centrally. Rosicky/Diaby/Ramsey furthest forward, Arteta/Wilshere in the deeper role, Song/Coquelin pretending to be defensive mids feels like pretty good cover through the centre with Gervinho/Podolski and Cazorla/AOC wide.

That said I don't think either Ramsey or Wilshere's role in the midfield has really been determined. Despite being used to seeing Ramsey in a more advanced role, I think in time he'd better suited to Arteta's role last season.

Sahin on loan is an interesting one. I can see why we are keen to get an option to buy because, assuming a fit Ramsey and Wilshere each game he played would likely be at their expense. If you are going to have to prioritise keeping people happy you surely want to put the players that are going to be there next season highest on the list.

@ carlito - who is likely to want Walcott though? Chelsea have now got a raft of players who can play wide in a three, and they're all better than Theo. Man Utd again have better wingers than him, as do City. Tottenham might like him I guess, but he's not exactly a huge upgrade on Lennon. I can't see Rodgers wanting him at Liverpool really either.

I don't know who'd want Walcott, but you've got to presume some clubs must have shown an interest for him to delay signing his contract for so long.

I think he's a very incomplete player and we're all frustrated that he hasn't developed as much as we probably would have expected, but without him we really wouldn't have many really quick players. That said, it's not a transfer that would break my heart.

first home game seems more popular than usual, sunderland on sale to reds at 10am and been sat in a queue on the online boxoffice since 930.

normally get first couple of games incredibly easily, maybe the signings are drumming up interest
